Art and literature are twin mir-rors civilization uses to reveal the harsh realities and hopeful dreams of its existence. The prophetic words of Hitler do not mask the irony of his regime and the infamy that would become the Holocaust.

In the last 100 years, few manmade events have had the emotional im-pact and have left such a frightful legacy as the Holocaust.

in the Concentration Camps unfortunately were not found until after the liberation. They do, however, show fi rst hand not only the misery and hardships, but also the dig-nity and spirit of those imprisoned.

Liberation forces at the camps uncov-ered thousands of drawings left by both adults and children portraying the daily life inside the prisons. Most of the authors will forever remain unnamed, but all cannot be forgotten. It is through these testaments that the truth of the atrocities has come to light.

Another dimension in the study of the Holocaust is the propaganda machine that the Nazis used to rationalize the treatment and eventual extermination of the Jews. The Nazis used art to create an image of the Jews as a threat to Germany. Through newsreels, posters and political cartoons, the Nazis waged a systematic campaign to dehumanize the Jews living in Germany and Europe. The Holocaust in Words

One of the earliest Holocaust novels is Der Totenwald: ein Bericht (German, 1945) by Ernst Wiechert. Wiechert was a non-Jewish German sent to the Buchanwald Concen-tration Camp for criticizing the Nazi regime.

T h e n o v e l p r o -v i d e d a fi rst person d e p i c -

tion of the camps well before the Holocaust entered the public consciousness.

Other notable Holocaust fi ction is:Exodus by Leon Uris, a novelization of

the Warsaw uprising in 1943. The Pawnbroker (1961) by Edward

Lewis Wallant. A Holocaust survivor makes comparisons between his new life in Har-lem and haunting memories of the camps.

Eva: A novel of the Holocaust (1959) by Meyer Levin. A Jewish woman recalls her experiences passing as a Christian in Ukraine, her eventual capture and deporta-tion to Auschwitz.

The Diary of a Young Girl (1947) by Anne Frank. Arguably the most well-known writ-ten account of the Holocaust.

Night (2006) by Ellie Weisel. A terrifying account of the Nazi death camp horrors that turns a young Jewish man into an agonized witness to the death of his family.

Children of the Flames (1991) by Luc-ette Lagnato. Nazi Doctor Josef Mengele subjected some 3,ooo twins to medical ex-periments of unspeakable horrors, of which only 160 survived. This book accounts these atrocities.Through the eye of the lens

Place and time: Rural Poland – DaytimeA train backs slowly along the tracks

toward an arched gatehouse. The women inside the cattle cars don’t need a sign to tell them where they are. They’ve seen this place in nightmares. Pillars of dark smoke rise from the stacks into the sky. It’s Auschwitz.

Shindler’s List, Screenplay by Steven Zaillian (1993)

Since 1945, over 350 movies and docu-mentaries have been made about the Ho-

locaust. One of the fi rst feature fi lms that included footage from the concentration camps was “The Stranger “(1946) by Orson Welles. Believed to be the fi rst Holocaust drama is “Ostatni etap” (1948, Poland) by Wanda Jakubowska.

Among the award winning fi lms about the Holocaust are: The Diary of Anne Frank (1959), winner of three Academy Awards (Best Supporting Actress-Shelly Winters, Best Cinematography and Best Set Design).

Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) based on made for television drama, one Acad-emy award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Sophie’s Choice (1982) won Best Actress Oscar (Meryl Streep). Based on the book by William Styron.

Genocide (1982) won Academy award for Best Documentary Feature.

War and Remembrance (1988) based on the novel by Herman Wouk, won three Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Mini-series.

Schindler’s List (1993) won seven Acad-emy Awards, including Best Picture. Based on the book by Thomas Keneally.

The Last Days (1998) won an Academy award for Best Documentary Feature.

Foreign fi lms that have won awards include; Life is Beautiful (Italy, 1997), win-ner of three Academy awards (Best Actor-Roberto Beligni, Best Musical Score and Best Foreign Language Film); The Pianist, based on the book by Wladyslaw Szpil-man (France/Poland, 2002), winner of three Academy awards (Best Actor-Adrien Brody, Best Director-Roman Polanski and Best Adapted Screenplay); The Reader, based on the book by Bernhard Schlink (England, 2008), winner of one Academy award for

Best Actress-Kate Winslet. The plight of Jews was not the only sub-

ject matter of fi lms about the Holocaust. In 1991, the fi lm Purple Triangles described the accounts of Jehovah’s Witnesses in the Nazi camps. The 1985 fi lm, November-mond (Germany/France) is a drama about two lesbians in occupied France. Paragraph 175 (2000) was about Gays and the Holo-caust.

In 1972, Jerry Lewis made a fi lm called The Day the Clown Cried. In this movie, he portrayed a circus clown imprisoned in the Nazi concentration camps. This fi lm was-never shown to the general public.

“A personable kid” you never saw with-out a smile. He was working hard to gradu-ate. Ms. Kelley was unsure of what his planswere after graduation. She recalled that hehad two sisters who graduated from LHSpreviously and that he came from a verynice family.

It was a shock to the students and teach-ers, especially after the crash earlier this yearthat took the life of another LHS senior, RyanHellard. “This comes just two months ex-actly after we lost Ryan,” she commented. The Class of 2013 has suffered a lot of loss, including the 2006 death of Cheyenne John-son, just 11 years old at that time.

Summer Internsby Matt Kindermann

The Workforce Investment Act of 1998 is the law that stipulates how federal dol-lars are spent training the workforce.

This law effects what training programs are available to people meetings certain crite-rion, what vocational schools consider for program availability, and what incentives employers are eligible for when hiring disad-vantaged job seekers.

Read the law at www.doleta.gov/pro-grams/factsht/wialaw.cfm.

The law mandates that 10 percent of the budget be set aside for youth servic-es, which includes the payroll for several paid youth internships during the summer months.

These interns are offered to local busi-nesses at no charge for up to 30 hours a week, for a maximum of 6 weeks during the period when school is out for the sum-mer.

These interns are especially interested in local opportunities to work with employers in the healthcare, information technology,

and cosmetology industries.

Although, any employer that is willing

to sponsor an intern is encouraged to con-

tact the Youth Coordinator, Kerwyn Dixon

at kdixon@swfl works.org, or at 863-233-

The intent of the internship program is

to expose youth to the experiences of the

labor market.

Through mentorship and on the job

training they can experience fi rsthand the

importance of being on time, working a set

shift according to a schedule, how to con-

duct themselves around customers, and

what to expect from an employer.

“I’ll tell ya how to stay young—hang around with older people.”—Bob Hope

For many seniors, giving someone a sta-tus update often involves inventorying aches, injuries and doctor’s appointments. But the “status update” is taking on an entirely dif-ferent meaning now that more seniors are logging on to Facebook—and enjoying the reported health benefi ts.

Apparently, Facebook can make seniors smarter. (The results of such studies in-volving Facebook and high school seniors weren’t available at time of printing—but we suspect the conclusions would contrast greatly.)

Researchers at the University of Arizona conducted a study that showed seniors with Facebook training demonstrating better cog-nitive performance than those without.

Red Orbit reports the experiment in-volved 14 seniors aged 68 to 91 who never if rarely used Facebook. One group received Facebook training and was asked to “friend” only fellow study group participants and post updates daily. A second group was told they were on a wait list for Facebook train-ing, and instead asked to keep short entries of daily activities at an online diary.

Afterward, all participants underwent questionnaires and neuropsychological tests measuring “loneliness, social support and cognitive abilities.” During follow-up test-ing two months later, the Facebook group showed a 25-percent better performance of cognitive abilities than the other study par-ticipants.

The study aimed to explore how the vi-brancy of one’s social life can positively im-pact cognitive activity later in life. One student researcher credited the dynamic qualities of Facebook with demanding greater engage-ment than the static online counterpart.

“When you create an online diary, you create the entry, you save it and that’s all you see,” Janelle Wohitmann reportedly said, “versus if you’re on Facebook, several peo-ple are posting new things, so new informa-tion is constantly getting posted.”

Crossword puzzles just can’t compete. Hopefully, study participants unknowing-

ly assigned to the fi ctitious Facebook training waiting list eventually got the teaching they desired, as social media training is drawing seniors in droves.

“It’s something we have a lot of demand for,” Tammy Gordon, vice president of social communication at AARP, told CNBC.com. “We’ve been doing a ton of training over the last two years and we’re ramping it up even more.”

The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project fi nds that more than half of seniors aged 65 and older are now online and 34 percent of those internet us-ers regularly visit social media sites like Fa-cebook.

Whenever large groups of seniors take initinative to learn new technologies that challenge their comfort zones and grow their minds, it’s a wonderful trend. (Speak-ing of trends, AARP is trending on Twitter—with more than 60,000 followers!)

Another trend is more disquieting. The American Academy of Neurology projects that if current numbers hold, by 2050 more nearly 14 million American will suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

So if engaging seniors in Facebook and another other social interactions—whether online or in-person, like the VNA of Florida’s new Silver Socialites program that organiz-es outings and provides transportation so seniors can have fun and make friends—somehow helps lift their spirits and strength-en their mind, maybe this trend can be re-versed.

After all, when it comes to aging healthful-ly, you can never have too many “friends.”

Cesare Frustaci, a Holocaust survivor, was the guest speaker at the Barron Library Book Club meeting on Monday, March 11. Mr. Frustaci, born to an Italian father and a Hungarian mother, told of his life in war torn Hungary during WWII. His presentation served as Barron Library’s kick-off for One Book, One Community, sponsored by the Hendry County Libraries.

Barron Library will be showing the movie The Devil’s Arithmetic, based on the book written by Jane Yolen.

It is the story of a Jewish-American girl who has little interest in the family’s reli-gious tradition.

Her attitude changes drastically when she enters a time slip that takes her back to 1942 to a Nazi death camp. She learns the price her family paid because of their heritage, as well as the importance of how the past con-

tinues to resonate in the present. The movie will be shown Friday evening, March 22 at 8 p.m. and is unrated.

Plan on attending the following activities as well:

March 26: 6 p.m. Dessert Auction to Ben-efi t Barron Library

On Tuesday, March 12, the Cowboys shut out the Griffi ns from Gateway behind the no-hit pitch-ing combination of senior Derek Bass, Junior Jarred Miller and sophomore Glenn Burton.

Senior Alton Burton had two hits and three RBI to lead LaBelle at the plate. Senior Ronnie Burton and

On Thursday, March 14, the Cowboys rode the arm of senior Tyler O’Ferrell on the

hill for their second shutout of the week. O’Ferrell gave up only two hits and struck out 9 Sentinels while walk-ing three.

Hansen Family reunionThe decedents of Hans Christian and Nellie Eliza Hansen had a Hansen Fam-ily reunion at Barron Park on Sunday, March 10. There were 86 people in attendance. Hans and Nellie settled into life in LaBelle at the old homestead on Nobles Rd. approximately 1912. Sherman was the third child and the fi rst one born on the homestead. Hazel, Harry, Sherman, Mary, Margaret, Ken-neth, Grace and Nellie were all raised there. Francis died as a toddler. The group only gets together every couple of years, but the cousins and sis-ters and brothers all enjoy seeing each other and spending time reminiscing about “the good ol’ days.”
