As the semester nears its close, many seniors are learning what hap-pens before they leave college. There are steps they must go through before they walk across that stage.

7KHUHJLVWUDU·VRIÀFHDQGRWKHUGH-partments have held events, like their salute to the grads on March 17, to help inform seniors of the process.

2) Check with Student Accounts to ensure that you have no holds on your account or anything that might prevent you from graduating. If you have a Haven Card (a.k.a Higher One) and you don’t plan on using it after graduation, make sure you close the account as fees begin applying after graduation.

3) If you received loans from the government, i.e. Stafford Loans, make sure you complete exit counseling at http://goo.gl/18uygn . It takes about 15 minutes and informs you of your responsibilities to repay them.

4) Get your cap and gown from the campus bookstore, and check out the information on how to order your

class ring or graduation announce-ment. If you’re participating in the commencement ceremony, the cap and gown is required.

5) If you want to prepare your-self professionally, be sure to visit the Career Services department for their résumé critique. They can evaluate it and offer suggestions for improve-ment. Also, you can dress profession-ally for interviews by visiting the career closet, which allows you to bor-URZRQHRXWÀW

6) Make sure the Alumni asso-

ciation has your non-school email ad-dress, so they can keep in touch with you after graduation.

In addition to keeping their grades at a passing level, these are the steps for seniors to take to prepare them-selves for ending their undergraduate career.

Relay For Life 2015Morgan Barrett and Megan ZickGuest [email protected]@lhup.edu

Relay for Life is a time, once a year, where stu-

dents, faculty and the community join

forces in the battle against can-

cer.

This year, Lock Ha-

ven University beat

their Relay goal by

raising $26,176.83,

up by almost $2,000

from last year’s funds

of $24,183.50. The event

took place in the Student

Rec Center on Friday, March 20.

More than 500 people came together for

the 10th annual all-night event to raise those funds

in honor of survivors, those who have lost their bat-

regards to the number of people who showed. The

amount of money raised this year was absolutely

outstanding,” Brittany Roberts, a freshman, said.

The theme this year was board games and there

were a variety of different activities held through-

out the night. All of the clubs and organizations got

very creative with their tables.

A few of the games and activities were monopo-

being held throughout the night.

The monopoly jail was one of the most popular

games of the night. Participants would pay $1 to put

someone in “jail” and they’d have to either stand in

the cell for 15 minutes or pay $3 to bail themselves

out.

There were also ceremonies throughout the

event there was the opening ceremony,

There were

powerful stories

told from people in

all walks of life that

have been affected by

cancer in one way or an-

other. The luminary ceremony

have passed and had family members and friends of

those people decorated bags to line the track.

All the participants lapped around the track to

walk for their loved ones.

So many of us have had someone in our lives

who’s affected by cancer, and we relay with those

people in mind.

Senior, criminal justice major, Shannon She-

ro said “Relay was great because it was so nice to

see so many organizations, like Greeks, sports and

clubs, come together for one cause.”

Each hour out of the 12-hour event was a re-

minder of the important cause. We relay for so many

reasons, but no matter what, we relay together.

Spring Break is the occasion when many col-lege students take a break from their busy school schedule and either go on vacation or return home to relax or earn a few extra dollars at part time jobs.

Seventeen members of the LHU Outreach for Humanity Club, club advisors, and an LHU PACC VISTA decided to something different with their time off. These students spent their Spring Break traveling down to Georgetown, S.C. where they worked with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for low-income, working families.

Students who went on the trip learned of the economic hardships that people living in the Georgetown region face, which was an eye-opening experience for the students who attended.

Through the change in the economy focus dating back to the civil war and rice plantations, to more recent hurricanes and losses in area businesses, the city continues to prosper in rich history and culture.

Sarah Landro, a sophomore in the pre-physi-cian assistant program who attended the trip, ex-plained:

“There was no better way to spend Spring Break than being with people that share the same values to help others.”

The group provided over 490 hours of direct service to the Georgetown community and ac-complished building 45 interior and exterior door frames and 30 window frames that will support 3 of the homes under construction.

Among the frames, they assisted in other tasks such as building walls, book shelves, and display XQLWVWKDWEHQHÀWVWKHLUQHZFRPPXQLW\+)+5H-Store.

When students were done building for the day, they managed to explore the region. The group ad-ventured into self-directed tours of historic George-WRZQZLWKLWV*XOODKFXOWXUHDQG5LFH0XVHXP

Students had a guided ghost tour that includ-ed stories and overviews of historic events in the region.

The group was also enjoyed the region and the culture by going on a guided kayak tour through DF\SUHVVVZDPSRQ%ODFN0LQJR&UHHNWDNLQJDQafternoon hiking through Huntington Beach State Park where they viewed alligators, and exploring 0\UWOH%HDFKDQG+LVWRULF&KDUOHVWRQ

Aly Page, a junior majoring in criminal justice with a psychology minor, goes on to explain, “since

my three years in college, this has been the best and most rewarding spring break, and I hope to do it again next year.”

Overall the trip was a success and a lot was ac-complished in the short amount of time.

I’m sure most of you have paid money to re-live your childhood and see the 2015 remake of Disney’s “Cinderella.” Downtown Abbey actress, Lily James, stars as Cinderella — or, in this version, Ella.

After she loses her mother as a child and her father as an adolescent, she is forced to live with her new stepmother, played by Cate Blanchett, and two step sisters Anastasia and Drisella, played by Holliday Grainger and Sophie McShera, who treat her like a slave.

Like most live action fairy tales, there were creative changes compared to the original 1950s version. For example, you see the relationship of Ella and her parents more compared to the original, where she learns from her mother that she believes in magic and fairy godmothers, which is why Ella starts be-lieving in them at a young age.

The message in the original is “a dream is a wish your heart makes, some-day my prince will come,” whereas in the 2015 live action remake it’s much more simple and broad with “have courage and be kind.”

Certain plot points have been changed to set it apart from our usual per-ception of fairy tales, and I can go all day talking about the differences, from how it’s changed to how Cinderella meets the prince to how the evil stepmoth-er takes a more proactive role in the remake and in putting Cinderella in her

place. But I want to talk about the current state of animation. Were in the age of many classic fairy tales being remade into live action

movies constantly, hoping to make bank on not only the child audiences, but the adult one as well. Sure, live action adaptations to fairy tales are nothing new. It’s been done for decades. But since the 2000s, certain live action fairy WDOHVZHUHPDGHWRDSSHDUPRUHHGJ\DFWLRQSDFNHGÁDVK\DQGDOODURXQGgrittier for the general audience, such as “Hansel and Gretel,” “Snow White DQG7KH+XQWVPHQµ´0LUURU0LUURUµDQG´0DOHÀFHQWµ1RWWRPHQWLRQHY-erything today is either being remade or rebooted.

There is this on-going stigma that the average adult thinks that 2D ani-mation is only for children, and that they can’t relate to it. Something about 2D animation to the average adult, they see as juvenile, boring and only en-gaging to their small child that they want to entertain for a hour and a half.

This is probably why 3D animation has become the norm because even though they still look cartoon-y, it looks more realistic and has more capabili-ties in the visuals department that can make it seem more mature for any viewer. But we are in the age where more adults are accepting the crafts-manship that goes into 2D animated TV shows like Legend of Korra, Steven Universe, Gravity Falls and Adventure Time.

But when it comes to the big screen, live action and 3D still rule the Hol-lywood movie scene.

Aussie band from down under

Grunge is back.

Courtney Barnett, an Aussie-based songwriter, has re-

leased a debut album for the ages. “Sometimes I Sit and

Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit,” released March 23rd,

combines modern pop, hippie psych, and...grunge, a genre

which has been dead since the ‘90s made popular by bands

such as Nirvana, Bush and Soundgarden.

Immediately, the album sets the tone to be a downright

fast and pleasantly aggressive. The catch is that it is any-

thing but. Based on the standout tracks, which include ‘Pe-

destrian At Best’, an anthem of angst, ‘Debbie Downer’, a

psychedelic summertime single and ‘Boxing Day Blues’, a

calm, quaint closing track, the album is all over the place.

This album might be all over the place but that doesn’t

deny it’s sheer awesomeness. Courtney Barnett and her

accompanying band seriously rocked on this album. Rock

is not dead, grunge is not dead!

Variety. Fuzz. Soul. “Sometimes I Sit and Think, and

Sometimes I Just Sit has it all” will leave your appetite

VDWLVÀHGKHOO\RXPLJKWDVZHOOVNLSGLQQHUPlug in your headphones, and vibe to Courtney Bar-

nett. Do it now, before she becomes a sensation. This beau-

ty from down under has potential to not only revive a lost

genre, but to one day become the face of it completely. And

why not? Kanye arguably did the same with the production

of rap music.

Maybe your ears won’t thank you (some songs you will

want to crank up)...but your heart will. Be prepared for

an emotionally standout album, perhaps one of the best

of 2015. This album was great, I would suggest anyone to

listen to it. It can truly brighten your day and make your

week!

If you play a lot of video games, you probably

have heard of Entertainment Sports or as it’s more

commonly known, Esports. I say it’s commonly

known as if it’s something people know a lot about.

When in reality, unless you play lots of video games,

you may never have heard of it.

This “sport” is one of the fastest growing forms

Five exotic pets legal in PA.

I know what it’s like to be staring at a blank page, trying

to start that essay. Or to be in the middle of a paragraph,

only to completely forget what word you wanted to

write. But there are several helpful sites to aid your

journey.

1. Mendeley.comA free downloadable program, Mendeley is a

library for your citations and research. Found an

article? Add it to Mendeley, which allows you to

highlight or make notes on your addition. It also

generates citations and bibliographies in whatever

style you need – Which means no more struggling

between MLA or APA or whatever citation style your

professor has demanded of you.

2. EditMinion.comAre you trying to avoid using passive voice or clichés? Edit-

0LQLRQFRPLVDJUHDWVLWHEHFDXVH\RXFDQSDVWH\RXUWH[WDQGVHOHFWVSHFLÀFthings for it to search for and it will point it out so you can correct it. The

only downside is that it does act up with larger amounts of texts involved.

3. Reverse DictionaryDo you know the meaning of a word, but can’t think of the right word?

The Reverse Dictionary is perfect for that because it allows you to search the

GHÀQLWLRQDQGWKHQEULQJVXSZRUGVWKDWÀWWKDW,W·VVWLOOLQWKH%HWDversion, so it may have a few bugs, but it’s still useful. Find it at

Onelook.com/Reverse-Dictionary.shtml

4. MyTomatoes.comIt’s a very simple timer that breaks things down

LQWRLQFUHPHQWVRIWZHQW\ÀYHPLQXWHVRIZULWLQJIRO-ORZHGE\ÀYHPLQXWHVRIUHVW,WJLYHV\RXWKHVXUJHof working against a timer, plus it lets you enter

your word count so that you can track your progress.

5. Writtenkitten.net$JUHDWVLWHIRU\RXUFXWHÀ[DQGPRWLYDWLRQDO

needs.. Written Kitten lets you enter a word count

goal, and every time you meet that goal it rewards you

with a picture of a cute adorable kitten to motivate you

to do it again! The only downside is that you have to type

directly on the website, but KITTENS!

Good luck with your works, especially as the semester dwindles down

and the professors start demanding papers.

I often used to ask myself if college was re-

ally going to be worth all the studying, the debt and late night procrastinating. I also used to at-tend another college and in a mere six months, after being academically suspended, I truly un-derstood why college is worth it. It’s not just for a career and a better future, but for intellectual growth.

I was unsure at my last college if the major I was going for was what I wanted to pursue. Sure enough, the hesitation hurt me academically and psychologically. I moved on from wondering what major I wanted to wondering if I wanted to con-tinue my college career. I was in desperation to ÀQGWKHDQVZHUWRP\TXHVWLRQ

During my limbo, I worked in a semi-indus-WULDOSODQWIRUKRXUVDQLJKWWKUHHWRÀYHGD\Va week. The pay was great, the people were nice and the work wasn’t too bad; by all standards I

should have stayed if all I wanted was to be paid a decent wage. I, however wasn’t happy with staying the way I was.

I felt as if I had no life outside of my work place. For all the money I was making, it seemed futile. After working for six months, I enrolled at Lock Haven University. Of course, after my last academic suspension I had to go through a trial period at LHU to show that I was going to put forth the effort. Evidently, I passed that semes-WHUDQG,DPQRZDIXOOÁHGJHGVWXGHQW

What was it that drove me to pass that se-mester even after all the hesitation I displayed in

my previous experience? I found answers to the TXHVWLRQV,ZDVFRQWLQXRXVO\DVNLQJ,ZDQWHGWRdeclare an English major and write a few books RUÀQGDQRWKHUD MREZLWKLQ WKDW FDUHHUSDWK ,also wanted the knowledge from the “useless” electives some students take for granted.

There will always be a sort of hesitation for every student, but remember, college is worth it. Half the battle, however is on the psychological level. College is all about learning, so why not soak up as much as you can for all of the money you pay, while expanding the horizons that come with it?

Maybe right now it doesn’t seem worth it, but I guarantee that all the studying, debt and late nights we put forth will eventually amount to not only a career but an eventual greater level of happiness in our lives.

Lately, I have felt completely out of my element.I didn’t wake up one morning and suddenly feel like less of an operative

Sarah. It’s more like I woke up one morning and started misreading and misdoing things.

For example, I would think that something someone said was supportive and kind, but it was actually sarcastic, mocking me right to my face. Or I’d think I aced a class project, when I really didn’t.

Suddenly everything that I thought and did was a miscalculation.$QG ,PHDQ KH\ZH·YH DOO EHHQ WKHUH ULJKW" ,·P QRW WKH ÀUVW SHUVRQ

More relevantly, I think I know why I’ve suddenly become so seemingly separate and I’m willing to bet that I’m not the only person feeling this way or grappling with this particular problem.

But as it turns out, that’s okay. It’s been said that success is when preparedness meets opportunity. I’m

A simpler way you could put it would be that maybe, just maybe, I’ve been trying too hard. And it’s caused me to be cut off from the life that’s hap-pening around me.

They say if you want to make God laugh, you tell him your plans. If you want to make yourself laugh, look at all the plans you’ve had that haven’t panned out or have changed.
