Li-Fi can be thought of as a light-based Wi-Fi. It uses light instead of radio waves to transmit information.

Instead of Wi-Fi modems, Li-Fi would use transceiver-fitted LED lamps that can light a room as well as transmit and receive information.

It is transmission of data through illumination ,i.e. sending data through a LED light bulb that varies in intensity faster than human eye can follow.

Introduction

Page 3: Li fi technology

How Does It Work

Page 4: Li fi technology

Radio spectrum 1.4 Million base stations, 5 billion Mobile

stations 600tb data every per month

Present Wireless Communication

Page 5: Li fi technology

Radio Spectrum is congested but the demand for wireless data double each year. Everything, it seems want to use wireless data but the capacity is drying up.

Available within the range of Base stations

Limited availability

Unavailable in aircrafts

Less secure (passes through the walls)

Cost and Expensive

Less bandwidth compared to other spectrums

Harmful to humans health

ISSUES REGARDING RADIO-SPECTRUM

Page 6: Li fi technology

Transmitting element

A high brightness white LED, Which act as a communication source.

Transmitting element

Fluorescent Lamp

LED

Page 7: Li fi technology

Receiving elements are “AVALANCHE PHOTO DIODE” and image sensor.

Avalanche photo diode is responsible for converting the light signal into electrical signal and further the procedure is carried out by image sensor.

WHY ONLY VLC?

Radio Waves

Infrared Rays

Visible Rays

Ultraviolet Rays X- Rays

Gama Rays

Gama rays cant be used as they could be dangerous.

X-rays have similar health issues.

Ultraviolet light is good for place without people, but other wise dangerous for the human body.

Infrared, due to eye safety regulation, can only be used with low power.

HENCE WE LEFT WITH THE ONLY THE VISIBLE – LIGHT SPECTRUM.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TECHNOLOGIES

Potential APPLICATIONS of li-fi

Page 11: Li fi technology

1.TRAFFIC LIGHTS

Page 12: Li fi technology

2.Hospitals(In few medical instruments)

Page 13: Li fi technology

3.In vehicles and traffic lights , reducing accidents and traffic

congestion

Page 14: Li fi technology

4.Street lamps(as free access points)

Page 15: Li fi technology

5.In Aircraft cabins

Page 16: Li fi technology

You cannot dim the lights. VLC is unidirectional (downlink or

broadcast only). There will be interference from

sunlight. You must have line-of-sight. VLC is a complex technology.

Common Misconceptions

Page 17: Li fi technology

ADVANTAGES …. Larger bandwidth ( 10,000 times the radio

bandwidth )

High speed data rate

High efficiency

Highly secure

Works even under water in sea

Safe for health

More availability

Low cost solution

Page 18: Li fi technology

These signals cannot penetrate walls.

If you want to move from one room to another, you will need to have a wired bulb present in that room.!!

Disadvantage of the LI-FI

Conclusion

Overcomes the limitations of radio spectrum.

High speed of 10 GBPS can be achieved.

Li-fi can solve the foresential problems of wireless communications these days.
