July 2015 marks 11 months since the current branch execu-tive committee was voted at the AGM in August 2014. The period under review has been one serious reflection for the branch and serious planning by the executive committee to sustain and grow the association. The branch came up with the action plan in January which is aligned to the association’s strategic plan so as to have the guided progress on the planned activities. It has not been easy to meet the objectives due to a number of challenges including time constraints, funding and sparsely geographical locations of the institutions. Other challenge the branch had to deal with is the stagnant membership subscriptions especially from the school and special library sector. This is a major hiccup as without mem-bership there is little that can be achieved.
There has been notable achievements that have been driven by the branch and interest groups. The branch executive committee and Ethekwini Municipal Library hosted the South African Library Week Launch that was held a Tongaat Civic Hall. Apart from the LIS workers and stu-dents, the launch was attended by over 300 school learners and local municipal leadership. HELIG and DUT Library organized the information literacy workshop in June that was also attended. The branch executive committee and Msunduzi Municipal Li-brary organized a branch seminar in support of the President’s theme, “Libraries for develop-ment: Action, integration and collaboration”. This was intended for the branch to succeed in strengthening, informing and initiating the long envisaged collaborations of the LIS sector with relevant stakeholders. PACLIC, KZN LOY and DUT Library organized a seminar on Promoting Library Services in July. There were number of lessons that were learnt from these initiatives that will increase the collaborations between the stakeholders. On behalf of the BEC, I would like to congratulate the follow-ing branch members: Shireen Deoraj for winning the 2nd runners up Librarian of the Year Award, Mandla Ntombela for his nomination to be the Chairperson of the Public & Community Libraries Section of IfLIA Africa and this qualifies him to serve on the IFLA Governing Council 2015 - 2017, Public Libraries 2015 – 2018, Tebogo Mzizi for being appointed to serve in NCLIS 2015 – 2017 . We also wish to extend our congratulations to our members that got appointed to HOD/senior positions in a number of institutions and those that have presented in a number of international conferences, e.g. IATUL and those that will be presenting papers at IFLA. Finally I wish to thank the KZN BEC members and LIASA members for their support, com-mitment, hard work and team spirit during this period under review. We also extend our gratitude to the Library managers and Directors who have made their staff and facilities to be available for the various branch activities. Without them it would be indeed difficult to con-tinue in our portfolios and render services to our members.

Lenovo Innovation Centre for the Li-brary – (DUT) The Library at the Durban University of Technology and Lenovo South Africa launched the country’s first Lenovo Innovation Centre; a state of the art walk-in centre aimed at increasing the University’s interactivity with the latest technology. The launch took place on Wednesday, 8 October 2014 at the BM Patel Library, DUT ML Sultan Campus where the In-novation Centre is located. Conceptualised roughly nine months ago, the Innovation Centre is aligned to Student Centredness; one of the two major threads in the University’s stra-tegic plan. The Innovation Centre is also aligned to the University’s trajec-tory on online learning, with 50 percent of its (DUT) programmes set to be on an e-learning platform by January 2015. “The need for technology in the uni-versities has always been a grey area plagued by limited budgets and exces-sive requirements,” said Graham Braum, Lenovo Africa General Manag-er. “Lenovo feels that technology should be part of our everyday lives, and not be seen as a ‘nice to have’. In his opinion technology is what will take South Africa to the next level. Lenovo has had some first-hand experi-
ence with fresh gradu-ates from universities across South Africa who joined them as interns. The one short-coming that they identified in the students was the lack of or limited ex-posure to technology. To become con-versant with technology one has to be exposed to an environment with IT abundance, and what better place than to locate such an environment within Academic library setting. The Innovation Centre has been provid-ed to the DUT University Library at zero cost. Lenovo, together with its technol-ogy partner Intel, provided the Library with a multitude of devices, ranging from ThinkPads, Thinkcentre All in One, IdeaPads, Multi-Mode Yoga tablets and Yoga laptops. It is hoped that the Inno-vation Centre will assist students and staff to acquaint themselves in the use of the latest technology to gain access to various online content that is being developed on the e-learning platform. This would also educate them in the use of these various products and help them when seeking employment. With the rapid evolution of technology and the limited finances available to higher education institutions, the sponsorship of this Innovation Centre is well re-ceived.
Braum said DUT will be the first SA Uni-versity to be rolled out with the Innova-tion Centre, adding that the company has already been in communication with other IT leaders at other universi-ties in the country with regards to the company’s intention to activate more Innovation Centres. Reports from Library staff at the site indicate that the centre has been well received by the student and staff com-munity and that it is always in use. Lucille Webster – Director: Library Ser-
vice (DUT)

YEAR-END FUNCTION KZN LIASA Year-end Function – 04 December 2014
The morning started with an introduction to the vision for the new Durban City
Library which will be developed in the Workshop area in Durban. It will be the
huge multi-million rand, state of the-art library.
A tour of the KwaMuhle Museum followed. This museum is housed in a beauti-
ful old building which was once the headquarters of the Native Administration
Department and the centre of Durban’s harsh system of labour control. The
building has been transformed into a museum which seeks to reflect the city’s
urban growth.
The tour, on a very hot December morning, was followed by a delicious and
relaxing lunch at the Oriental Restaurant at the Workshop.
