‐ ‐ New Member Interview: Kate Edeker

‐ Age: 24 ‐ HomeTown? Quincy ‐ Running Background? I ran cross-country and track throughout high school

and college. After college, I found myself needing something to train for and started running half and full marathons

‐ When/Why Liberty? I joined Liberty because I needed running partners! But I stayed with Liberty because it's refreshing to have the routine of a hard weekly workout with a group of women who are all working hard and want to see everyone succeed.

‐ Greatest Running Moment? Toward the end of my senior year XC season in college, the varsity team was tapering and went to the track to do some speed work. Being the end of the year, the sun had already set, so our coaches pulled their cars onto the straightaways and turned on their headlights. Clouds rolled in and as we started picking up speed, it started raining. The entire team in step with drops of water made golden from the headlights is to this day one of my favorite memories.

‐ Currently Training? I am training for the Quebec City Marathon, which takes place the Sunday before Labor Day.

‐ Like Most About Running? It gives me a chance to reset. Whenever something is bothering me or it's been a hard day at work, running helps to both distract me and let me process things in my own time. Plus, it does feel good to be in shape.

‐ Favorite Running Quote/Motto? "There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." Although this video always gives me chills: There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them.

Note From Dru Dear All, Suddenly we are looking at August—that was fast. The summer is the time for many of us to step off for a brief moment –for vacation, family, colleges, outings, projects and all the other stuff of life. Please do take a break, enjoy and slow down! One of the ways I slow down is to cook – I know some of you do not find that relaxing in the least – in any event – two recipes are included here – both from a cookbook from Nice, France – vegetarian and wonderful! The casserole was recently featured in the Globe as the traditional dish for family to bring for the Tour de France watching picnic in a small French town. Having said that, we have enjoyed each other’s company at Coach Cathy’s for Pam’s co-prez sign off and at Athleta for the launch of Coach Cathy’s Mastering Running. There has been fabulous running all around—by many members in the total gamut of races – mile, 5K, an hour on the track, half marathons, marathons and an upcoming iron lady!!!! I am so impressed by the amount of support and cheering that comes over the email transom for all of our efforts- you all are a great group. Looking forward, we will be gearing up in the fall for the cross-country season and all that entails. Grateful to be part of such an enthusiastic feisty wonderful & fast community!!! Dru

Note from “Iron Woman”, Emily Bliss Footnotes: How was the Iron Woman?

EB: It was such a cool experience. It poured rain towards the end of the swim and started thunder/lightening, so they diverted us to shore with a short ways to go, then we had to run a ways barefoot to get to the transition area! They didn't count the second swim lap, but I was so close to the end that my second lap time was about the same as the first anyways. It poured for the first 2 hours of the bike, then became beautiful and was a pretty nice day until the end! FN: What was the best part? EB: The best part was definitely the end of the race, which has to include the last 2 miles of the marathon running through town giving high fives to friends and stranger cheering me on, then running through the Olympic oval to the finish line as the announcer Mike Riley said "Emily Bliss, YOU are an Ironman!" And if course I cried:) FN: What was the worst part? EB: The worst part was definitely not getting my nutrition right before going into the run. I could hardly drink or eat anything for 4 hours, which led to dehydration and a stop at the medical tent before heading home.

FN: What surprised you? EB: I surprised me! I didn't think I could do the race in under 13 hours, and I thought there might be a point when I wanted to give up, but that never happened. FN: Any advice for those interested? EB: Train right, practice your nutrition, trust the process, be patient, and know it's going to hurt but is totally worth it in the end!

Note from Coach Cathy

The energy at Liberty is fabulous. As longtime member Sue Gustafson said at practice last week, different age groups and dynamic individuals create an energized atmosphere that lasts long after practice is over. When at practice and explaining the workout, I was looking at about 20 faces, thinking how you motivate each other. Everyone high fives each other after the workout (newish Liberty routine along with “kindergarten abs”) and I was thinking how you go for it on the track and also use your own judgment in terms of how much you can that night. That’s good. We finished last night's workout with a few sprints in which Jamie Henzy showed sprint speed among the masters. Distance runners seemed to like them too, with Rachel wanting to join in after running 4 1200s..... Thanks to each one of you who contributes to Liberty in different but important ways.

Your training on the track is paying off ….You’ve run fantastic races this summer -- from Carrie's Age-Group Record at Mount Washington to Jan's return to the roads to Emily's Ironman to Dru's One Hour Run in 7.14 miles on the track to Joan's age group win at the Cape Cod 5K to Karen Lein's 1st place win at the Bay State Games to Kathleen's win as the first place woman over all at the Hingham 4 miler to Viki's 4th place age group at the East End Five Miler finish Joanne's 22:09 at a recent 5K fun run to Francesca's 4th place age division finish at the BAA 10K to Rachel's first place age group finish at the Windham 5K (I was just looking through some race results which you've reported since June)......You are out there and running well – whether at the top of your game or coming back from a break! I’m looking forward to August and fall races. Of races I know about now, we’ve got Viki at the High Street Mile - Jan at the Swimsuit Classic - Joan and Joani (JT) at Chilmark - Mary at the Caribbean World Masters Athletics Championships, - Ellen racing with her Grinnell cross country team -- Kate E. at the Quebec Marathon - Rachel at the Bay State Marathon - Deanna, Kathleen, Jan, and Joan at the Lone Gull 10K - Inez at the Huntsman Games - Joanne at the Tufts 10K – Jan, hopefully Amanda and Jamie, Sue G., Joan, Dru, Viki, and Karen L. at the Syracuse 5K - Dru at the Bay State Half Marathon - Francesca and Loomis at the BAA Half Marathon, Francesca at the Philadelphia Marathon – Joan at the Philadelphia Half Marathon – and, we hope, everyone at the NE

Cross Country meet on November 9th. I’m on vacation next week. Dru will have the workout. As for planning ahead, week-end workouts this month will be on Saturday, August 16th at 8 a.m. starting from the BC Reservoir and on Saturday, August 23rd starting at the Brookline Reservoir. If you’re needing an evening to lighten up and relax before fall starts its busy sprint, consider hanging out together on Thursday, August 21st, at “The Social”, a restaurant/bar at 320 Washington Street in New Corner, to listen to our own Leni Webber! RECIPES (both from Cuisine Nicoise by Hillary Davis)

Tour De France Zucchini Pie……. Ingredients: Filling: 2 cups cooked rice 3 cups coarsely grated zucchini 3 TBS virgin olive oil 21 medium white onion, diced 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 and ½ cups thinly sliced ham ( you can omit for vegetarian version) 1 cup grated Emmental cheese 3 large eggs, plus, 2 large egg yolks ½ TSP Dijon ½ TSP honey Freshly grated nutmeg (I did not have this either.. ) Pepper How to: Heat oven to 375. Add cooked rice to large mixing bowl. Squeeze grated zucchini in paper towels to eliminate moisture, and add to bowl with rice. Heat 3 TBS oil, add onion and garlic, cooking on medium for 5 minutes. Add ham and cheese to bowl, using a fork to blend. Wisk together eggs, egg yolk, mustard, honey, nutmeg, ½ TSP salt and a lot of fresh ground pepper. Add to bowl and combine. Bake for 35-45 minutes, until golden brown……..this recipe included a crust which I ignored and still it was fabulous – imagine with a buttery crust!

Late August Double Fig Salad with Arugula, Goat Cheese and Hazelnuts (serves 4) This looks fussy but is so outrageously good – just follow instructions and you will be SOOO happy! Ingredients: 1 TBS Virgin Olive oil 16 fresh figs, stems removed, cut in half 3 TBS honey 2 tsp red wine vinegar 1/8 anise extract ( I had none – and it was fine) ¼ cup olive virgin oil1 TBS white wine vinegar 1 RBS raisins Salt Freshly ground pepper 4 cups arugula 2 ounces fresh goat cheese 4 TBS roasted hazelnuts, chopped How to: Preheat oven to 350; lightly oil a gratin dish Slice 8 of figs in half, place in gratin dish, cut side up. Wisk together honey, red wine vinegar and (anise extract) then spoon a little over figs. Bake for 15 minute. Remove and allow to cool. Slice the other 8 figs in half ( I did not have these additional figs and it was fine…) In a food processor , process the olive oil, vinegar, thyme and raisins. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Toss arugula with dressing and divide among 4 plates. Place 2 of baked figs and 2 of fresh figs on each plate. Top with crumbles goats chees and hazelnuts. Enjoy!!!!! Dru
