Dear Parents,

I’m extremely excited about the upcoming football season. Liberty Hill is a wonderful place to coach and call home. The purpose of this letter is to answer some questions you may have heading into the season. I would like to explain some of my philosophies and most importantly, to open the line of communication between you the parent and the coaches of Liberty Hill High School.

First, I would like to ask you for your support for the 2020 football season and to explain a little about the program. As you must be aware, we constantly try to improve each player in six areas we feel necessary to make the starting team. Those areas judged in making the starting team are: 1. strength, 2. quickness and speed, 3. size, 4. knowledge of our system, 5. hitting ability and toughness, and 6. attitude and effort. Since the end of last football season, we have had most of our players involved in the following activities. 1. Weight lifting for strength, 2. Running drills for agility, 3. Individual instruction (i.e. center snaps, ball handling, passing, catching blocking and tackling) and 4. skill development by position.

Most parents think their son is the best, which is human. However, being realistic, only 11 players can become starters offensively and 11 defensively. Every team member has a role to play in the success we have. Every member is important to our team, and every member will get a chance to contribute to our team. Not everyone will wear the title of starter, but everyone will contribute.

We are very fortunate to have had lots of success in our football program over the years. When things are going well, it is easy to be a positive parent. There are no guarantees that our success will continue at the high-level previous teams have achieved. I expect us to be very successful but still there are no guarantees. I would ask that you remain upbeat and supportive even in down times. Regardless of the outcome of our season wins and losses, your son will be a better person if the proper parental guidance is practiced. Football is not for everyone, it takes a special type of young man to play this tough game. Parental influence is extremely vital. Please keep in mind the real purpose of why your son is playing football- TO BECOME A BETTER PERSON. Most of you know how we run our program, we demand Discipline, Teamwork. Sacrifice and Motivation. We believe this will help your son to cope with future bosses, company policies, his future wife, the civil laws and other institutions of authority.

In conclusion, I want to thank you for taking the time to read about our philosophy and I hope the suggestions I made will help you as a parent deal with the highs and lows of the upcoming season. Thank you for being a key part of our success. I am certainly looking forward to coaching your son. Sincerely, Jeff Walker

TEN COMMANDMENTS OF FOOTBALL PARENTS

1. Be POSITIVE with your son: let him know he is accomplishing something by simply being part of the team. Don’t put him down.

2. Don’t offer excuses for him if he is not playing. There is usually a reason for it. Encourage him to work

hard and be his best.

3. Don’t put down his coaches, etc. Remember the coach represents the “Boss”, the “Authority”, the “Parent”, the “Law”, etc. If you are constantly bad mouthing your son’s coaches, how can you expect them to play for the coach? You are teaching your son to be a complainer, not a doer.

4. Encourage your son to follow the team rules. Whether he is a first stringer or a seventh stringer, players

must follow rules pertaining to curfew, drinking, smoking, girlfriends, promptness, and school. Football is a very demanding sport and a coach must concern themselves with a player’s off the field activities in order to get the maximum physical and mental performance out of his players.

5. Insist on good grades. Check the number of hours your son spends on homework. It is the duty of the

parent to see that their son is working in the classroom. (No matter how good a player he is, if he doesn’t have good grades, he doesn’t get into college-times have changed.)

6. Don’t develop envy towards other players because you don’t like their parents, etc. Don’t try to live

your life vicariously through your son. Football is a kids’ game-Let them play it. Don’t show any animosity or jealousy to any of your son’s teammates because they carry the ball more, score more touchdowns, or even gets a write-up in the paper. This type of envy rubs off on your son and it can devastate the team.

7. Don’t be a know-it-all. The coaches’ work with the players 12 months a year and they know what each

kid can do and what he cannot do. As a fan, you are entitled to scream your head off but don’t become belligerent and arrogant towards players.

8. Insist on your son’s respect for team rules, school rules, game officials and sportsmanship. Don’t let

him make fools out of his family, school, and team by some uncalled-for gesture or incident whereby he will bring shame. Self- respect begins with self-control.

9. Encourage your son to improve his self-image by believing in himself. Don’t compare and contrast your

son with former family members who played previously. Every youngster is different. Don’t put added pressure on him by expecting him to be much better that his brother, etc.

10. Encourage your son to play for the love of the game-not a scholarship. This alleviates a lot of pressure

on a youngster. Scholarships are controlled by and are in the hands of college recruiters. Liberty Hill High school does not give scholarships. I have seen some great player fizzle because the pressure on them to get a scholarship was so great. Players become selfish, etc. Insist on unselfishness. Usually, good things happen to the unselfish, hard-working athletes.

29. WEAR YOUR HELMET AT ALL TIMES WHILE ON THE FIELD.

30. IF YOU DON’T KNOW-ASK.

31. IF YOU HAVE A COMPLAINT COME IN AND TALK IT OVER.

32. THINGS TO DO: A. HANG UP YOUR EQUIPMENT. B. WHEN MUDDY CLEAN YOUR SHOES OUTSIDE. C. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR EQUIPMENT. LOSE IT AND YOU

PAY FOR IT. D. HELP KEEP THE LOCKER ROOMS CLEAN. KEEP THE INSIDE AND

TOP OF YOUR LOCKER DUSTED. PUT TOWELS IN BASKETS-NOT ON THE FLOOR.

33. THINGS NOT TO DO.

A. NO PROFANITY. B. NEVER USE ILLEGAL TACTICS. C. NO ALIBIS. NO COMPLAINING, IF YOU WANT SOMETHING BETTER

WORK HARDER. D. NO BRAGGING.

34. WE WANT THE ENTIRE TOWN TO BE PROUD OF OUR FOOTBALL

TEAM. ANY PLAYER INDULGING IN CONDUCT THAT CAUSES THE TEAM EMBARASSMENT MAY BE DISMISSED FROM THE SQUAD.

THREE GREAT RULES FOR GREAT GRADES!!!

1.Always Attend Class!

2.Always Be on Time!! A. To Class B. With Assignments

3. Do Something Extra!!!

All you have to do is commit yourself to these three rules.

The first rule is Always Attend Class!! Far and away the most common reason for struggling with your grades is missing too many classes. Take pride in perfect attendance.

The second rule is Always be on Time!! The second most common reason for bad grades: Tardies!

The second part of the second rule is be on time with all assignments. Teachers, like coaches, are not interested in excuses. No Excuses, Just Results!!

The third rule is amazing. It’s amazing because of the shock value to teachers. Most teachers are just thankful if a kid behaves in class and looks halfway attentive. But, here you come with something extra!!

LIBERTY HILL PANTHER NUTRITION

NUTRITION-THE KEY TO SUCCESS

One major challenge in your son’s quest for maximum physical development lies in his ability to supply his body with adequate levels of nutrients. His intake of nutrients is needed by his body for practice, workouts, competition and recovery. The food he eats will supply his body with the nutrients he will need to be able to withstand the demands of his daily life and training program.

BASELINE NUTRITIONAL HABITS

The following six (6) personal habits must become part of your daily lifestyle. It is imperative that you develop these habits (actions) and implement them on a daily basis.

1. Always eat at least five (5) meals per day. 2. At each meal your caloric intake should equal 1 part fat, 2 parts protein, 3 parts carbohydrate. 3. At meals only eat enough food (calories) to meet your energy requirements for the next 3-4 hours. 4. Never try to lose weight only try to increase lean weight and decrease fat weight. 5. Drink 8-12 glasses of water each day. 6. Remember-no one is perfect, if you mess up, get back on track and try to make it a habit.

Why is eating at least five (5) meals important?

1. It will speed up your metabolism. 2. It helps you become leaner. 3. It will build muscle faster. 4. It will increase your energy for workouts. 5. It will help you get all the nutrients you need for every day.

MISTAKES….

1. Skipping meals 2. Lifting on an empty stomach 3. Eating fried foods 4. Not eating until you feel hungry 5. Not knowing the importance of timing your meals though out the day 6. NOT STAYING PROPERLY HYDRATED!! CARRY WATER WITH YOU!!

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The athletic training (AT) staff at LHISD strive to provide the best care possible to all athletes. We provide assistance with the following: prevention of injuries; recognition, evaluation and assessment of injuries; immediate care; treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning; and organization and administration of healthcare services. We currently serve approximately 1000 student-athletes in both male and female athletic programs from grades 7-12.

There are currently three ATs serving the students of LHISD:

Melissa Harrington is beginning her 21st year as an athletic trainer and 5th at Liberty Hill. Susan Slagle is beginning her 4th year at Liberty Hill. Danny Barringer is beginning his first year at Liberty Hill.

We want to provide every student-athlete quality medical care should they have an injury over the course of this next year. Communication is paramount to this end. If there is ever any question about your child’s health, please call a staff AT.

The phone numbers in the AT facilities are as follows: • 512-260-5540 (Gym facility – Melissa Harrington) • 512-260-5530 (Field house facility – Danny Barringer) • 512-260-5521 (Junior high facility – Susan Slagle)

In the event that your child is injured or ill, there are several steps that we need to follow to ensure that your child receives the best possible medical care:

• Make sure your child reports the injury/illness immediately. • Make sure your child is in the AT facility for all scheduled treatment times. • Please communicate any concerns to the AT staff. • If, at any time, it becomes necessary for your child to see a physician, make sure the physician provides written

instructions for all treatment, therapy, and/or limitations for practices and games and return it to the AT facility.

Your child will not be given any treatment or be allowed to return to activity without a written note from the attending physician.

Notes from parents will not suffice. This is to ensure that we are following the doctor’s directions to the exact letter of intent.
