In 2008 the teams spent a week in Ikereku and the surrounding villages. The picture shows the new church building and congregation. The excited lady on the platform is telling us that after ten years of blindness she can now see.

MONDAY: IMINIDedication of the new accommodation for teachers

There was great excitement in Imini when the King and all the village chiefs came to inspect the new facilities for our teachers. When the school was opened 10 years ago the staff slept on mattresses on the floor, carried their water from the stream and read with the aid of kerosene lanterns. Now they have a purpose - built facility with 12 rooms, including 2 fitted kitchens, flush toilets, showers and a computer room. It is the finest building in the village with running water piped from our borehole.

The last ten days of October thirty one members of the UK team joined up with over 200 volunteers in Nigeria. The teams included doctors, nurses, ophthamologists, teachers, caterers and helpers.Together we visited three rural areas bringing free medicine, cataract surgery, counselling, teaching and hope.

NEW LIFE IN CHRIST

This was a baby with no name and no future. His mother died as he was born leaving the distraught grandparents to care for him. The baby cried continu-ously, so did the grandmother. She was found wailing in Ikereku market and brought to the team. We quickly purchased milk, vitamins and clothes for him and showed her how to feed him. We have arranged for money to be sent each month to provide for his needs. The grandparents are so happy to have this lifeline and have now named him Israel- “a prince with God.” Israel’s story is not uncommon. All too many women still die in childbirth; all too many babies die in infancy. We help as many as we can. Sadly another baby we tried to help died shortly after the team left.

NEW SIGHT

AKUFO VILLAGE: NEW LIFE, NEW HOPE

NEW NAME

We had over 100 medics on the team. Over1,500 villagers were given free medical consultations, medicines, prayer and counselling. Our ophthalmic surgeons gave sight to 40 needy villagers, some who were almost totally blind.

NEW VOICE, NEW STEPS

many villagers receive the Lord

Both small children and teenagers had their own special programmes. Altogether we ministered to over 700 of them. Each child was inspired to have a destiny, a hope and a future. Each child received a gift; the babies had clothes but the older children were given “destiny outfits”, a doctor, a teacher, a footballer......

We met Victor last May. For five years he had been walking on crutches since he was hit by a bus which killed his friend and left him with an above knee amputation. Liberty paid for his prosthesis which you see him trying out. He later became a valued member of the youth team

LIBERTY MAKING PEOPLE FREEThe aim of Liberty is to impact entire communities with the love of God, body, mind and spirit . We have four different blessings to give. Briefly they are:

1. Clean WaterBy sinking wells and boreholes we reduce the incidence of disease and death through cholera, typhoid, diarrhoea and other water born infections.

2. Free Medical Care and Health EducationMany people die needlessly because of ignorance and lack of medical care. We have rescued and cared for many malnourished babies. We help to support an orphanage. Our medical personnel give help and advice to those presenting with diabetes, high blood pressure and other preventable ailments. We perform minor operations and so far over 100 people have had sight restored through free cataract surgery.

3. Education

Our 2 new school buildings provide almost free education for over 500 primary pupils and literacy classes for their parents. We help with building costs and salaries of 2 other schools.

4. Pastoral CareSince 1999 Liberty has impacted almost 100 villages with the love of God. We believe that salvation and well being come through a personal encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ. After each outreach a church is built and ongoing pastoral help is given to all villagers regardless of creed.

FUTURE CHALLENGES

1. A MOBILE OPERATING THEATREBringing sight to the blind is a most exciting and rewarding achievement. Every year we have to turn people away because of lack of equipment and facilities. This year we were able to purchase a second ophthalmic operating microscope and install air conditioning for the surgeons . Our plan is to buy a mobile operating theatre so that many more people can receive their sight. Estimated cost £80,000

2. SCHOOLING Our schools have high standards and are extremely popular. At Sepeteri we have had to add 2 new classrooms and employ 3 new teachers to cater for the need. We are also asked to build a secondary department so that our high standards can be maintained as pupils graduate. Currently we employ 21 teachers. £100 monthly (N 250,000) will sponsor a head master while a junior teacher can be sponsored for £40 per month (N 10,000) You can sponsor a schoolchild for just £10 (N2,500)or an orphan for £30 each month. (N7,500) We have many other projects. Please consider sponsorship through a standing order. Thank you!
