What is that machine, and what are you doing?
We get asked that question all the time, and thought that maybe others are curious, as well, but haven’t asked. This is a tagging cart, complete with a scanner, reader, and lap-top on top. On the next shelf are RFID tags, and the big black box below that con-tains the battery that runs every-thing (though we often plug it in). What we are doing is putting an RFID tag in every book in the library. This is very similar to when we barcoded the entire collection almost 20 years ago (my, how time flies). How does an RFID system work? An RFID system consists of a tag, which is made up of a microchip with an antenna, and an interrogator or reader with an an-tenna. The reader sends out electromagnet-ic waves. The tag antenna is tuned to re-ceive these waves. A passive RFID tag draws power from field created by the reader and uses it to power the micro-chip’s circuits. The chip then modulates the waves that the tag sends back to the reader and the reader converts the new waves into digital data. What does this all mean to you? It means that we are taking the first steps necessary to provide better and faster service for you.
Once the books (and DVDs, audio books and music CDs) have been tagged, we will
be ready to offer self-checkout to you. This way, if you don’t need our help, placing holds, or picking up holds, paying fines or just asking general questions; then you can use self-checkout and be on your way. Does this mean less work for us? Actu-ally, no; it is going to allow us to spend more time helping you. Not having to hur-ry through your question to get to the per-son in line behind you will result in better service. Also, this is going to give us more time to do some of our other duties that happen behind the scenes. Such as book ordering, cataloging, processing new mate-rial, and planning programs. So the next time you see one of us out there with Matilda (just seemed like a fit-ting name), don’t be afraid to come and ask what we are doing.
Kathy is shown here using Matilda in the children’s chapter book section.

You’ve waited all year for it, and it is almost here, time for SUMMER READING.
Sign-up begins May 15th at The Dalles-Wasco County Public Library.
Calling all Junior Mad Scientists, kids who have completed kindergarten through
third grade! We will meet every Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. from June 17th through August
19th, for an hour of fun and some cool science.
Some of the planned programs are: OMSI planetarium, and Jim White will be here
with his telescopes; Eric Herman; Penny’s Puppets; storyteller Chris Leebrick; Cinda
Johnson music and magic; volcanos; Buck and Elizabeth; bottle rockets. Please note,
while most of these programs will be open to all ages, certain ones will be limited to
those of the appropriate age.
Mad Scientists Unite, kids in grades four through eight are in for a summer of fun and
exploration with this year’s theme, Fizz, Boom, Read! Beginning June 19th, every
Thursday at 2 p.m. we’ll celebrate science.
Planned programs for this age (sorry, younger siblings are not invited) include: Bug
City Chicks; Lego Day; Duct Tape Mania; our own version of Mythbusters; and the re-
turn of the ever popular, Brian Waite Band.
A complete list of programs and times will be in the June newsletter. In the meantime,
if you have any questions, please contact the library at 541-296-2815.
We meet at 6:30 p.m. the third Thursday of each month upstairs in the maga-zine corner. Each month there is a new book to read and discuss.
The book we are reading for the May discussion is The kite runner, by Khaled Hos-seini. The unforgettable, heartbreaking story of the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father's servant, The Kite Runner is a beautifully craft-ed novel set in a country that is in the process of being de-
stroyed. It is about the power of reading, the price of be-trayal, and the possibility of redemption; and an explora-tion of the power of fathers over sons—their love, their sacrifices, their lies. A sweeping story of fami-ly, love, and friendship told against the devastating back-drop of the history of Af-ghanistan over the last thirty
years, The kite runner is an unusual and powerful novel that has become a beloved, one-of-a-kind classic.
For those of you that need to plan a little further in ad-vance, the book for June will be Year of wonders: a novel of the plague, by Geraldine Brooks.
Copies of these books (as well as audio recordings) are widely available in the Sage Library System. All readers are welcome (and for those of you wondering, NO, you do not have to have a library card in order to join us), even if you haven’t finished the book.
“Third Thursday” book group
Knitting in the Library Who knew that knitting in the
library could be so much fun! A
knitting group meets in the library
in Dufur, and anyone is invited to
join them. If crocheting is more
your thing (or embroidery, etc.)
come on down, they’ll make room
for you. The Dufur Knitting Club meets on Thursday
nights, from 6:00 until 8:00. For more information, you
can contact the Dufur Library at 541-467-2588.

Library expansion
fund raiser
Cal Scott and Kathryn Claire will be
performing at the Mint on Saturday,
May 31st at 7 p.m. as part of the fund-
raising for the Library Expansion Pro-
ject. Tickets are $15, and are available at
Klindts and Columbia River Music.
Cal Scott is a singer/songwriter and
composer
of music
for film
and televi-
sion. A
master of
many
styles, his
specialty
is scoring
to picture:
creating
the right
music to
tell the story. In addition dramatic or-
chestrations, he has developed a feel for
folk music of many cultures, helping a
film establish a sense of place and time.
He writes and performs with the
Trail Band, an 8 piece folk ensemble,
and has co-produced a number of CDs
for himself, the Trail Band, and other
artists.
Kathryn Claire has asserted herself in
a new generation of traditionally in-
spired musicians. Her fiddle playing
exhibits a technical grace which is
matched only by her truly captivating
voice and she possesses the rare ability
to move seamlessly across genres. Her
deep love and respect for traditional
music has long been a driving influence
and those roots can be heard in her own
original music.
Early classical training on the violin
naturally gave way to her own creative
inclinations. While still a teenager,
Kathryn taught herself guitar in order to
explore her own voice as a songwriter.
She has since spent years cultivating her
unique style
and approach
to music as a
violinist, sing-
er, and song-
writer.
Performing
is a truly joy-
ful experience
for Kathryn
Claire, and her
love of music is evident every time she
takes the stage. Strong fundamentals
from her classical background combined
with an innate ability to improvise and a
keen sense of harmony has made her an
integral member of many prominent
Celtic bands in the Pacific Northwest for
the past 10 years.
The Mint is located at 710 East 2nd
Street in The Dalles, OR. For more in-
formation about the program, contact
library director, Sheila Dooley at 541-
296-2815.

Community Library will be closed on Monday, May 26th in ob-
servance of Memorial Day. Normal hours will resume on Tuesday,
