Director’s Corner The fall semester is always busy but this one in particular has whizzed by with a flurry of new and traditional activities. Homecoming weekend was busy with numerous activities includ- ing an open house, a Biolaw Con- ference and alumni events. Law students are already hunkering down, studying in their carrels as they prepare for their first set of law exams or put the finishing touches on a course outline. Two new faculty joined the law school, Virginia Harper Ho and Lu Mulli- gan, which means librarians have discovered new resources to help support their research and teach- ing needs through the primary library contact service. New staff, Kelly Bevins, Library Assistant, and Michael Oehlert, Technology Support Technician, both hit the ground running as we had pro- jects, circulation shifts and tasks awaiting their arrival. Many of us cannot figure out where the se- mester has gone. Recently in a brief conversation with a refer- ence student assistant we dis- cussed how he was already enrol- ling for next semester’s classes. He and I noted that by the time you get comfortable with the se- mester, it is all over. When this semester ends we will be closer to selecting a new dean of the law school and a new associate direc- tor of the law library. The library is a great place to study and pre- pare for class. But I also hope people find it a place to catch your breath, pause, relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of the law school’s busy activities. See you in the library! As the oldest law library in Kansas, the Wheat Law

Library is an integral part of the School of Law. It

serves the law school and university community in legal

and interdisciplinary scholarly pursuits and provides

attorneys, judges, and the general public with access to

legal information. Key components of this mission in-

clude collecting and preserving Kansas, national, and

international legal documents, teaching legal information

literacy, and serving as a legal information gateway by

providing access to sources beyond the scope of the physi-

cal collection.

There is no denying that it is fall again when

Joyce McCray Pearson — Director & Associate Professor, oversees all operations of the

library including budget, personnel, facilities and coordinates all functions between

the law school and law library.

Kelly Bevins — Library Assistant, assists with government documents and interlibrary

loan. She also works the at the reference and circulation desks.

Pam Tull — Head of Public Services can assist you with borrowing non-KU library

materials (ILL), updating material on the website, and finding government documents.

Katherine Greene, Automation & Acquisitions Librarian, oversees the acquisition of

library materials including electronic resources. She provides training and support to

library staff for computing systems.

Su Johnson is the Circulation Department Manager; she manages the circulation desk,

and oversees shelving and stack maintenance. She also assists with ILL.

Marsha Tiemann is the Cataloging Manager; she catalogs and processes library mate-

rials and government documents.

Jeff Montgomery is the Serials Department Manager. Jeff routes paper materials and

manages the periodicals, loose-leaf and supplemental materials.

Chris Steadham is the Interim Associate Director of the library and is still the Faculty

Services & Research Librarian providing legal and interdisciplinary research support

and teaching Advanced Legal Research.

Lauren VanWaardhuizen — Cataloging Librarian is responsible for online catalog and

record maintenance and collection maintenance.

Tammy Steinle McLain — IT & Digital Librarian, supports faculty in submitting scholar-

ship to repositories, provides backup technology help, does displays and assists with

website maintenance.

W. Blake Wilson — As Instructional & Research Services Librarian Blake teaches the

research portion of Lawyering for 1L’s and acts as liaison for Westlaw & Lexis.

Gale Troth — As Accounts Manager, Gale pays the bills, prepares budget projections

and is responsible for payroll and personnel matters.

Michael Oehlert — Technology Support Technician, assists faculty, students & staff

and is responsible for classroom tech support.

Welcome to “who does what” in the law library. Everyone in the library is here to help you with your

research needs; we all work together in many different capacities. These descriptions reflect only a

snapshot of our individual duties.

Two New Faces Arrive in Green Hall : Welcome Michael & Kelly

In August Michael Oehlert joined the Law School as our new

Technology Support Technician. Michael was most recently a

temporary IT Support Specialist at the National Bank of Kansas

City and before that he was

a system administrator for

Team Financial, Inc. in

Paola.

Kelly Bevins joined

Wheat Law Library at the

end of August as a Library Assistant. She is from Virginia Beach,

Virginia, and previously worked for the City of Virginia Beach

Public Libraries for 7 years. Her MLIS is from Florida State Uni-

versity.

CONFERENCES & PRESENTATIONS —

Joyce Pearson, Christopher Steadham and Pam Tull attended the Mid-

American Association of Law Libraries (MAALL) conference October 14-16.

The conference was held in Iowa City, Iowa. Joyce attended to promote the next MAALL conference

which will be held in Lawrence in 2011. Chris co-presented a program entitled Working to Ensure

Access to Electronic Legal Information in MAALL States: A Report from MAALL Members of the AALL

Working Group; the program explained a collaborative effort underway to help insure access to

online legal information in every state. Pam attended the meeting as part of her duties as secretary

of MAALL.

The same October weekend Blake Wilson and Lauren VanWaardhuizen were attending the

WestPac Conference held in San Francisco. Their presentation was entitled Superheroes and Theo-

ries of Legal Justice; they talked about how legal theories are represented throughout the history of

comic books. They examined the personas of some of your favorite heroes, how they viewed law and

justice, and how the archetypes can be used to teach the law.

TEACHING —

This fall Chris Steadham has been teaching Topics in Advanced Legal Research for Kansas; and

Blake Wilson headed up the Research portion of the Lawyering course.

In the spring Chris will teach Advanced Legal Research.

TRAINING —

Need to firm up those research skills for topical papers? Keep your eyes open for announce-

ments about upcoming trainings.
