“Next Chapter” Book club

A very special bookclub is now meeting at the Coffee Pot every Thursday afternoon. The Darke County Board of Developmental Disabilities recently

joined the Next Chapter Book Club Affiliate and now offers the program locally. There are already eight members and two facilitators: Rush Rogers, a retired teacher, and Mary Baker, Darke DD’s Advocacy & Recreation Coordinator.

T he Library is lending support by purchasing the books for the Club and offering a movie and popcorn upon finishing a book. Right now the Club is reading Charlotte’s Web and will view the movie TBA. The public is invited because one aspect of the program is for the members to feel a sense of inclusion. Mary explains “They enjoy social connections and being a part of the community.“ Seeing the members in public also lessens a sense of difference.

Another aspect of the program is described by Susan Berg, Executive Director of Ohio Clubs “People with intellectual and developmental disabilities love

books for the same reasons most people do. They enjoy being transported to different worlds. Taking that journey with a group of friends makes it even more delightful and fun.“

Mary sees “amazing transformations” in members. “They learn tools to advance confidence, to speak up, to purchase something, to build

relationships.” More facilitators are needed in order to offer Clubs at other locations because transportation is an issue. Anyone interested in being trained please call Mary at 937-548-4628. And new members are welcome! Seen below are six members with Librarian Jonelle Haupt.

Craft Beer for Summertime

As temperatures soar in the summer, even die-hard craft beer drinkers start rethinking their heavy imperial stouts and other high alcohol brews and reaching for lighter

beers. Beers that are low in alcohol and more suited to sweltering summer days don't have to be low in flavor though. You can drink light, refreshing beer without sacrificing quality and complexity.

On Thursday, June 8 and Thursday, July 6, at 6:30 p.m. each night, Greenville Public Library's Craft Beer Education Series will take a look at a variety of summer seasonal

beer styles that are unique and interesting while still being easy to drink in hot weather. The Craft Beer Education Series is lead by Certified Cicerone David Nilsen. David will guide attendees through a tasting of five beer styles, explaining the history and unique ingredients and brewing process of each.

Craft Beer Education Series classes are free, but seats are limited and

registration is required. Please call Greenville Public Library at 937-548-3915 to reserve your seat. We hope to see you there!

Film Series Features Brazil

B razil is a 1985 dystopian science fiction film directed by Terry Gilliam and written by Gilliam, Charles McKeown, and Tom Stoppard. The film stars Jonathan Pryce and features Robert De Niro, Kim Greist, Michael Palin, Katherine Helmond, Bob Hoskins and Ian Holm. It centres on Sam Lowry, a man trying to find a woman who appears in his dreams while he is working in a mind-numbing job and living in a small apartment, set in a

consumer-driven dystopian world in which there is an over-reliance on poorly maintained machines.

B razil's bureaucratic, totalitarian government is reminiscent of the government depicted in George

Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four except it has a buffoonish, slapstick quality and lacks a Big Brother figure.

Film critic Jack Mathews described the film as "satirizing the bureaucratic, largely dysfunctional

industrial world that had been driving Gilliam crazy all his life." It’s named after the recurrent theme song, Ary Barroso's "Aquarela do Brasil", as performed by Geoff Muldaur.

Join us on Thursday May 18th at 7 p.m. Ryan Carpe will be leading a brief discussion after the movie and as

always there will be free theater popcorn, candy, coffee, and Jones Soda. We hope to see you there!

Family Yoga on the Lawn

T he whole family is invited to Yoga on the Lawn at the Library! On Wednesdays May 24th, June 21st, July 12th, and August 9th yoga teacher Erica Menke will lead a free hour

long class from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The class will be suitable for all age groups, from beginners to more advanced. Bring your own blanket or yoga mat and enjoy the relaxing, rejuvenating effects of yoga - especially beneficial out in the fresh air of summer.

Erika is owner/instructor of Nature’s Heart Yoga Studio, 120 W. Third in Greenville. She began practicing in 2014 and became a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) last August.

She was recently certified in Trauma Sensitive Yoga and is currently completing her 300 hour certification at Indigo Yoga Dayton to become a 500 hour RYT. She will also receive certifica-tions in Restorative Yoga, Reiki Level I, and Thai Yoga Massage by this August.

Erika is also a mother and an astute business woman with a Masters Degree in Organiza-

tional Leadership from Purdue University. More info at naturesheartyoga.com. Rain location for the class will be First United Methodist Church on Fourth Street.

Concert on the Lawn

T his summer the Library will be offering free concerts on the front lawn featuring some of the best talent in the area. Each concert will coincide with Mainstreet’s “First Friday” starting with June 2nd from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to stop by and enjoy the music! Bring a blanket, lawnchair, and your lunch - or just take a moment’s break.

Our first guest artist is Taycie Powell who is from the Arcanum area. Taycie sings and plays a wide range of genres and can be sampled on youtube. Her instruments include

piano, guitar, ukulele, and violin - all played by ear! She started piano at age eight because older siblings played and she looked up to them. Her greatest desire was to play in the church band. She got her wish when she was asked to join at age twelve, the youngest person to do so.

T aycie shares she loves to write songs and combines her music with politics. “Music changes people in ways words don’t. It moves people and brings something to their awareness. It’s more than entertainment. It tells a story.“

It was a big decision to go professional and requires a lot of discipline. She admits that in writing the tunes come easier than the words. She looks forward to becoming known for her original style and for her own songs. She likes Indy pop, soul, and “heart music.” For now she enjoys performing and growing a fan base.

Rain location is First United Methodist Church on Fourth.

City of Three Rivers: A Novel About Dayton

T he Library is proud to make available a beautiful historic novel set in Dayton Ohio from 1877 to 1924 called City of Three Rivers. It was written by Grace Gillespie Carter who grew up in Yellow Springs, attended Antioch College, and lived in Dayton for eight years. City of Three Rivers was endorsed by Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley who said, "A wonderful novel, with many fascinating tidbits of Dayton's history. I loved it!"

Grace describes the storyline “This epic novel follows the life of one extraordinary woman during a time when floods repeatedly threaten to destroy the city she loves. It

is also a time when women were confined to the roles of wives and mothers, but Susan chooses her own journey, pursuing her passion to become a healer.”

She continues “Susan begins to explore unconventional beliefs about life and death and to uncover family secrets.

Why do her nephew's maps remind her of the maps her father used to draw? And why does a beautiful young artist seem strangely familiar? Susan's quest takes her across the country to her father's childhood home and leads her to a deeper understanding of herself and an unexpected way to help two people who have been searching for each other for a long time.”

T he book is also available at the Dayton Metro Library and Amazon. For more info see www.cityofthreerivers.com.
