We are select members of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry that feel the library of NUCLEUS is failing us
miserably!
The Network of Undergraduate Collaborative Learning Experiences for Underrepresented Scholars (NUCLEUS)
NUCLEUS is a program funded by a grant from Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Undergraduate Biological Sciences Education Program designed to recruit, retain, and graduate academically talented African-American, Latino, Native-American, and Asian students majoring in science related disciplines.
NUCLEUS uses tools such as: Academic advisementCareer and professional developmentPeer MentoringAllows students access to supplement math and science textbooks
What is the problem?--the current system of keeping track of books in the NUCLEUS reference library is inefficient
Why is it a problem?--advancing technology available--a demonstrated need to be innovative with technology in research
Who’s problem is it? EVERYONES!Jacqueline N. Aldridge, M.S.HHMI NUCLEUS, Coordinator

Innovation of technology for the sake of research to propel UD to the top of the research tier in academia
Provide a better system to increase the overall efficiency of the NUCLEUS program
Create a computer based system that will allow the Morris library to link to as an additional resource to students
ADEPT Digital Library at The University of California Santa-Barbara and UCLA
• Secured funding from two outside sources for creation/evaluation of ADEPT:
• Digital Libraries Initiative• U.S. National Science Foundation
• Conducted assessment interviews with instructors and students to determine need for a digital online library
• Conducted research in order to find best design for a digital online library
• Created evaluation plan to measure future success
• Over the course of 5 years, evaluations occurred at annual intervals to measure:
• Continuous need assessment
• Role of teaching assistants • Outcomes and potential improvements
• Data collection
• Any change in instructor methods
1. Keep up with the times
2. Technology enhances the learning experience for students and instructors
3. Provide better access to resources
4. Supplement resources at UCSB and UCLA’s main libraries
5. Teaching students to be better researchers and more actively engaged
Part I: Working with Microsoft Access- Tutorial available online
a video tutorial - listen, see, do!For the verbal/language-based learnersFor the Visual and hands on learners
- common application in University of Delaware departments, a function of Microsoft Office
- an excellent starting point for cataloging the system and eventually upgrading to a more elaborate system
- Costs, Pros/Cons, Timeline
Part II: Collectorz.com Book Collector- relatively easy- not very expensive - comprehensive- highly recommended
"With your database at your fingertips, you'll never again purchase the same edition twice. A very practical yet
inexpensive computer program, with which anyone can become a librarian.” - Martha Stewart
- Costs, Pros/Cons, Timeline
Assessment
Number of users Circulation User surveys
Using a simple sign out/sign in sheet
Integrating the NUCLEUS library into a division of an existing library in the University such asMorris Library – as a separate sectionChemistry Library – as an independent reference section
Questions, Comments, ConcernsThank you!
