There's a buzz of voices and a scurrying of feet ay classes change at PatersonState Teachers College in 1976 A. D. Some students crowd into the elevators toget to their next classes, while others must use the escalators (poor kids!) The GleeClub members are vocalizing in their soundproof practice room, while in their clubroom I.R.C. members enjoy a television broadcast from Russia. Seated in one of theluxurious easy chairs in the library is a pert sophomore named Susie, (Susis Soph-omore is wearing standard college garb, paddle, shoes and hobby sox, and is gettingdreamy-eyed over a picture of Hankie Winatra, the latest "swoosh" sensation ofthe nation.) Susie finishes her magazine and picks up a large volume of the "An-nals of P.S.T.C." which covers the years 1942-1946. Susie Sophomore is curious tolearn a little of the life and hardships at Paterson State in those long ago pioneerdays when State's campus was a miniature park and the students had to climb threeflights of stairs a hundred times a day. Let's peek over Susie's shoulder and get alook at the Staters of Yesteryear.

    — Susie opens to the '42 section and gasps as she sees a group of girlsin burlap skirts with paint smeared on their faces, and a number of boysornamented with makeup and hairbows.

Susie calms down as she reads that this was just a part of the in-itiation torture inflicted on the Freshmen.-The Freshmen then were hoststo all other students at the Freshmen Frolic, the annual event at whichSeniors act like "Freshies" and Freshmen just act. Susie finds that they hadmany of the subjects she had-Western Civ., Freshman Composition (wherea misplaced comma is treason), and Physical science. There's been a slightchange in the Music Appreciation course, however, instead of studyingBach, Sibelius, et al, Susie's fellow students are learning to appreciate thoseold masters, Goodman, James, and Dorsey.

Turning to the '43 section, Susie sees the same faces but now they'resmug and self satisfied. Wo wonder—look what they did to the lowly under-classmen.

  • In this other picture the Freshmen look alittle happier. It's a shot of the "sunflower" chorusfrom the Freshmen Minstrel.

The Sophomores reluctantly agreed that they gave a smooth perfor-mance. Besides watching the Freshies perform, the Sophs journeyed to thebig city to see performances of "Winged Victory" and "Othello". On ShafferPlay Day they joined the rest of the school on an enjoyable boat ride toRye Beach.

Susie eagerly turns to the Upper Division pages, for she has heardthat this is where the "fun" begins. The Sophomores, now jaunty Juniors, are startled to find that Uncle Sam has appropriated all of their male class-mates, and that some of the Freshmen have suddenly become Juniors.Susie is puzzled until she finds the explanation— a war acceleration pro-gram is in operation at the college, and these Freshmen are taking theirsophomore subjects during the summer months. Finally a long-awaitedexperience comes to the Juniors—IT'S PRACTICUM TIME. And eachJunior, as she strode valiantly forth into the battle of the three R's, utteredthis prayer:

"Now I stand me up to teach,I pray the Lord this plea to reach,If I should faint before I finish,—May the floor open beneath me—!"

It was also in this year, Susie reads, that an historic event took placeat State. In the true pioneer spirit and under the able leadership of theirclass president, the Juniors struggled for, and succeeded in establishing, astandard college ring. Why it's the same we have now, Susie marvels, as shereads a description of the military style ring.

The Juniors were active participants in other affairs-a class banquetin the Robin Hood Inn,

  • a boat ride to Bear Mountain, the activities of thenew Red Cross College Unit, and the unforget-able Latin-American pageant held at Jersey CityState Teachers' College.

Unrecorded in the annals of the class history, because it did notoccur during the regular school year, was the event which filledevery student and citizen with joy and thanksgiving. On theevening of August 14, 1945, the official announcement of thetermination of the second World War was made to the Americanpeople.

Susie regretfully turns to the final pages of the 1942-46 "Annals".These "oldtimers" certainly were busy people and their last year was noexception. In the fall of the year, an honor roll containing the names of"Staters-in-Service" was unveiled at a simple ceremony in the halls of thecollege. The crys of "Swing your partner!" and "Dos a dos!" resounded inthe auditorium the night of the all-school square dance, and the Seniorswere in there swinging. Literally, they added a few extra minutes to eachday to get enough time for all their class meetings, club activities, noontimedances, square dances, cake sales and what was very important, skatingparties.

For three months the Seniors devoted their energy to practice teach-ing- with a few spare moments spent thinking of the coming Senior Ball, the first to be held by the college in several years. The culminating eventsof the year were publication of the '46 Pioneer and the graduation cere-monies, both of which reminded the Seniors that they were leaving theircherished school and friends — not without sorrow and a tinge of sentimen-tal regret.

Susie closes the dusty volume with a sigh.

SCHMIDT TO SERVE AS VARSITY TEAM COACH

Returning Servicemen Feature Paterson State's Squad

After a lapse of two years, athletics came back to Paterson State inthe form of varsity basketball. The number of returning veterans who wereinterested in playing basketball was the deciding factor in organizing ateam. Although the season was almost half over, a schedule of thirteengames was arranged. The schedule included some of the teams that wereformer regulars on State's schedule, among them Montclair State, JerseyCity State, and Panzer.

The season to date has been a successful one with State winning sixgames and only losing two. The two games lost were to Montclair by twopoints and to Java College, a newcomer on the schedule, by six points. There are five games still remaining to be played.

The approaching of spring is a sign that baseball weather soon willbe here. State will field a team after a lapse during the war years. Thehome field will most likely be Eastside Park, although some games mayhave to be played on other fields due to a lack of baseball fields in Pater-son. The schedule will consist of about thirteen to fourteen games.

In the fall, State will be back with a full-time athletic program.Intramurals in various activities with varsity basketball and baseball willbe the order of the day.
