Welcome to the Spring Libretto of Travel for the Arts, the UK’s leading opera, classical music and dance holiday specialist, established in 1988 for The Friends of Covent Garden. In this edition we present more new tours for like-minded travellers to the world’s legendary opera houses and music festivals.

This summer there is the chance to visit two new destinations – Split in Croatia, and the Black Forest city of Bad Wildbad for their annual Belcanto Opera Festival. A feast of Italy includes new tours to Parma, Ravenna and, for ballet lovers, Milan. Finally, we return to the ever-popular Wexford Festival Opera and Stephen Carpenter presents two new chamber music tours in the UK.

OPERA ON THE DALMATIAN COAST 10 – 15 July 2016 Tour Code: DBV1

NEW DESTINATION

We are delighted to present a new tour to Croatia’s breathtaking Dalmatian Coast. This two-centre holiday begins in historic Dubrovnik, with a Gala concert featuring tenor José Cura outside the picturesque Church of St Blaise. The tour concludes in the bustling and vibrant city of Split, where we attend Puccini’s Turandot at the Gallery Mestrovic, a stunning location beside the Adriatic Sea itself.

SUN 10 JUL Morning arrival in Dubrovnik and transfer to the 5-star Pucić Palace Hotel, a traditional boutique hotel situated within the UNESCO World Heritage Old Town. A drink and canapes will be served on arrival at the hotel, before a free afternoon to settle in and relax. Welcome dinner in the hotel or a local restaurant.

MON 11 JUL This morning we take a guided walking tour of the Old Town, visiting historic sites including the Franciscan Monastery and the Rector's Palace. We also take a cable-car ride for spectacular views over the city. Afternoon at leisure. In the evening walk to the Gala Concert performance in front of the Church of St Blaise in the heart of the city.

TUE 12 JUL Today we make our way to Split, stopping en-route at Ston, situated on the Peljesac peninsula and famous for wine production and oyster cultivation. We continue to Makarska, one of the most beautiful cities on the Dalmatian coast, where we visit the town centre. Lunch will be served in a local restaurant before making our way to Split, to check in at the modern 4-star Hotel Cornaro, located in the heart of the city. Dinner will be served in the hotel.

WED 13 JUL Join your guide this morning to visit the UNESCO World Heritage city of Trogir, set within medieval walls and boasting a wealth of Renaissance buildings. We then return to Split to visit the historic centre which is based around Diocletian’s palace, a magnificent example of Roman architecture. Afternoon and evening at leisure.

THU 14 JUL Today is free for independent exploration of the city. In the evening a farewell dinner will be served in a local restaurant, followed by the opera performance at the Gallery Mestrovic.

FRI 15 JUL Late morning transfer to the airport for the homeward flight.

RIGA OPERA FESTIVAL7 – 12 June Tour code: RIX1We return to Latvia in 5-star style for the Riga Opera Festival, which presents a feast of Verdi. Performances of Il trovatore, Rigoletto, La traviata and Macbeth are performed in the jewel-like Latvian National Opera, while our sightseeing programme takes in the treasures of this picturesque city with its plethora of distinctive art nouveau architecture.

BALLET IN THE BLACK FOREST14 – 18 June Tour code: BAD1This new two-centre holiday to Germany for ballet lovers begins in Stuttgart, where we see Demis Volpi’s world premiere of Salome, performed by the Stuttgart Ballet. We continue to the picturesque spa-town of Baden-Baden for Jean-Christophe Maillot’s adaptation of Swan Lake, performed by Les Ballets de Monte Carlo in the Festspielhaus.

ROSSINI IN WILDBAD 21 – 25 July 2016 Tour Code: WIL1

NEW DESTINATION

We visit the charming Black Forest region of Germany for the Belcanto Opera Festival in Bad Wildbad, established in 1989 to celebrate the composer’s stay in the town. This year the festival presents productions of his works Demetrio e Polibio and Sigismondo, as well as a semi-staged production of Le Comte Ory, performed by singers from the Akademie BelCanto, and a concert performance of Bellini’s rare work Bianca e Gernando.

THU 21 JUL Late afternoon arrival in Stuttgart. Transfer by coach to Bad Teinach (approx. 1.5 hours) to check in at the 4-star Hotel Therme, a spa-hotel located in the centre of the Black Forest Nature Park, and just 40 minutes away from Bad Wildbad, where the festival takes place. Welcome buffet dinner in the hotel.

FRI 22 JUL Join your guide this morning to transfer to Bad Wildbad for the morning performance at the Königliches Kurtheater. After the performance we take the funicular railway to lunch in a local restaurant. This is followed by the afternoon at leisure to explore the town independently. Evening performance in the Trinkhalle and transfer back to the hotel.

SAT 23 JUL Today we make our way to the picturesque spa-town of Baden-Baden. We take a walking tour of the city, passing through the pretty centre with its Kurhaus

and Trinkhalle. We also make an exterior visit of the Festspielhaus, designed by the Viennese architect Wilhelm Holzbauer in the mid-1990’s, and the foyer of which was built in the former Neo-classicist style railway station. Lunch will be served in a local restaurant before returning to the hotel to freshen up. Transfer to Bad Wildbad for the evening performance in the Trinkhalle.

SUN 24 JUL Morning at leisure. In the afternoon we transfer to Bad Wildbad for the early afternoon performance. This is followed by a farewell dinner in a local restaurant before returning to the hotel for the remainder of the evening at leisure.

MON 25 JUL Transfer to Stuttgart for your homeward journey.

THE VERDI FESTIVAL IN PARMA 7 – 11 October 2016 Tour Code: PMF1

NEW PRODUCTION

We return to Verdi’s homeland for the annual festival celebrating his works. Don Carlo is presented in Parma’s opulent Teatro Regio, while I masnadieri will be performed in the intimate Teatro Verdi in Busseto on his actual birthday. There is also the option to attend a performance of Giovanna d’Arco in the stunning Teatro Farnese, created entirely from wood in 1618.

FRI 7 OCT Early evening arrival in Bologna, and transfer by coach to Parma (approx. 1 hour). Check in at the officially rated 5-star Hotel de la Ville, close to the centre of the city. Welcome dinner in the hotel.

SAT 8 OCT Join your guide for a walking tour of Parma, during which we visit the beautiful Romanesque Duomo and the graceful octagonal Baptistry in rose-coloured marble, containing late-Renaissance frescoes by Correggio. We continue to the birthplace of Arturo Toscanini, one of the greatest conductors of the 20th-century, and see the Camera di San Paolo, a room in the former Convent of San Paolo which contains a masterpiece of fresco work by Correggio. After the tour, lunch will be served in a local restaurant. Afternoon at leisure before the evening performance at the Teatro Regio.

SUN 9 OCT This morning we journey out of Parma to visit the Labirinto di Franco Maria Ricci,

a country estate which contains a magnificent collection of art works dating from the 16th to the 20th centuries. Return to Parma for a free afternoon; we highly recommend a visit to the Palazzo della Pilotta which houses the National Gallery of Parma. Optional evening performance at the Teatro Farnese, also located within the Palazzo della Pilotta.

MON 10 OCT Morning at leisure. In the afternoon we travel to the nearby town of Roncole to see Verdi’s birthplace, a humble tavern-residence. We then continue on to Busseto to visit the Casa Barezzi and Teatro Verdi. A farewell dinner will be served in a local restaurant before the final evening performance in the Teatro Verdi. Return to Parma after the performance.

SAVONLINNA OPERA FESTIVAL11 – 15 July Tour code: SAV1The medieval Olavinlinna Castle once again provides an imposing setting for Savonlinna’s annual Opera Festival, in the heart of the Finnish lakes. The festival presents three Verdi operas in tribute to the Shakespeare 400th anniversary; their own production of Otello, and performances of Falstaff and Macbeth from Ravenna Festival.

Join us in Italy for a feast of operetta at the Ravenna Festival, which presents productions from the most prominent Hungarian theatres in a programme which journeys ‘along the Danube river’. TEATRO ALIGHIERI

FRI 14 OCT This morning meet your guide for a walking tour of Ravenna. We see some of the most important buildings which contain mosaics of the early Christian and Byzantine eras, including the San Vitale Basilica, the Galla Placidia Mausoleum and we also take a short coach ride to the Battistero Neoniano. Afternoon at leisure before the first evening performance at Teatro Alighieri.

SAT 15 OCT This morning we visit the Sant'Apollinare Nuovo Basilica by foot, and then travel by coach to the Mausoleum of Theodoric, built in 520 AD, and the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe, which contains exceptional Byzantine mosaics. Return to Ravenna for a free afternoon and the evening performance.

SUN 16 OCT Today we take a tour ‘in the footsteps of Dante’, visiting the Museo Dantesco, the Basilica di San Francesco where his funeral was held in 1321, and his tomb. We also see the Battistero degli Ariani. The morning tour will be followed by a farewell lunch in a local restaurant, before the afternoon at leisure and the final evening performance at Teatro Alighieri.

THE PUCCINI FESTIVAL9 – 13 August Tour code: TDL1The Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago offers a tranquil break in picturesque Tuscany. We stay in the charming walled city of Lucca, and visit some of the beautiful stately villas of the area. Opera performances include classic Puccini favourites Madama Butterfly, Tosca and Turandot in the open-air theatre on Lake Massaciuccoli.

The jewel-like Teatro Rossini hosts a new production of comic favourite Il turco in Italia, as well as the revival of 2012’s Ciro in Babilonia, while the new production of La donna del lago will be performed in the Adriatic Arena.

DORSET OPERA FESTIVAL27 – 30 July Tour code: DOR1We return once again to the Dorset Opera Festival, which this year includes performances of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin and Verdi’s Macbeth, both performed in the stand-alone Coade Theatre at Bryanston, which is set amid 400 acres of glorious Dorset countryside. Our tour is based in the picturesque town of Sherborne and includes plenty of time for individual exploration.

We make our annual autumn pilgrimage to Ireland for the Wexford Festival, which is renowned for its fascinating programme of lesser-known operas. This year the Theatre Royal presents performances of Donizetti’s Maria de Rudenz, David’s Herculanum and Vanessa by Samuel Barber. There will also be the opportunity to book for some of the pre-performance talks.

WED 2 NOV Afternoon arrival in Dublin and transfer to Wexford by coach (approx. 2 hours) to check in at the traditional-style 4-star Talbot Hotel overlooking the quay front in the town centre. Welcome drink at the hotel.

THU 3 NOV This morning meet your guide for a walking tour of Wexford. The town’s inhabitants have included Celtic tribes, Norman knights and Oliver Cromwell’s army, and in more peaceful times it has been a prosperous port town. Welcome lunch in a local restaurant, followed by an afternoon at leisure. There is the chance to attend a pre-performance talk before the evening performance at the Opera House.

FRI 4 NOV Today we take a journey to nearby Waterford. We visit the Medieval Museum, which recreates life as it was in the city during the Middle Ages. Several medieval structures, including the unforgettable Chorister's Hall, are integrated

within. We also take a tour of the Bishop’s Palace before lunch which will be served in a local restaurant. Return to Wexford for some free time and the evening performance.

SAT 5 NOV Join your guide for a visit to nearby New Ross, where we visit the Dunbrody Irish Emigrant Experience, which charts the history of the Irish people’s travels. We follow this with a tour of the Ros Tapestries, which have been created by teams of embroiderers around Wexford and Kilkenny since 1998, and which depict events around the Anglo-Norman arrival in the South-East of Ireland. Return to Wexford for a free afternoon before the optional pre-opera talk and evening performance at the Opera House.

Opera Australia present their long-awaited Ring Cycle at the Arts Centre, Melbourne, directed by Neil Armfield, conducted by Pietari Inkinen and with a fine cast including Greer Grimsley, Bradley Daley, Lise Lindstrom and Stefan Vinke. AMSTERDAMThe Dutch National Opera and Ballet focuses on innovation and diversity - reimagining the classics, showcasing little-known repertoire and presenting brand-new productions. It celebrates its 50th anniversary this summer, and in the 2016/17 Season presents a programme of traditional and modern works, all performed in the waterside Het Muziektheater.

ROMEA taste of la dolce vita can be found in Rome, where the beautiful Teatro dell’Opera has hosted the premieres of many great Italian operas. It now runs its Season from November to October, with some summer performances presented in the imposing and historic ruins of the Baths of Caracalla.

OSLOHalf submerged and rising from the fjord, the new opera house in Oslo has captured the attention of the opera-loving public since its inauguration on 12 April 2008. The Norwegian Opera and Ballet here present their season of international and Norwegian works.

TETBURY FESTIVAL 29 September – 2 October 2016 Tour Code: TET1

Steven Isserlis and Olli Mustonen, the Schubert Ensemble, Chiaroscuro Quartet and the Choir of the Enlightenment are all featured in this fabulous festival in the heart of the Cotswolds. Concerts take place in the splendid Georgian Gothic Church of St Mary the Virgin and there will be the opportunity to explore the town’s 25 antique shops as well as to visit the gardens of the Prince of Wales’s home at Highgrove, and the National Arboretum at Westonbirt.

THU 29 SEP Independent arrival at The Close Hotel, Tetbury. The town of Tetbury has 1300 years of recorded history dating back to 681 when Tetta’s Monastery was mentioned in a charter by King Ethelred of Mercia. In the Middle Ages, Tetbury was an important market town for the Cotswolds wool trade and many of the wool merchants’ houses still stand just as they did 300 years ago. Welcome dinner in the hotel followed by a concert in the Church of St Mary the Virgin.

FRI 30 SEP Morning visit to the Gardens at Highgrove, with time for an independent lunch. In the afternoon we will go to Newnton House in Long Newnton, the home of Lady Smith OBE who founded the Tetbury Festival in 2003, for a lecture by luthier, David Rattray, and cellist, Sue Sheppard, on “Historically informed performance”. Return to Tetbury for the evening concert by the Chiaroscuro Quartet.

SAT 1 OCT Morning visit to the National Arboretum at Westonbirt where lunch will be available under your own arrangements. Return to the Newnton House in the afternoon for a talk on “Stradivarius” by Toby Faber, author of “Stradivari’s Genius: 5 violins, 1 cello and 3 centuries of Enduring Perfection”. The concert this evening features Steven Isserlis, who plays a Stradivari cello of 1726. Dinner followed by recital in the church.

SUN 2 OCT Optional Festival Service at 11.00am, followed by lunch in Crudwell, 5 miles from Tetbury. Final a cappella concert by the Choir of the Enlightenment at 5.00pm. Patrons have the choice of staying in Tetbury for a further night, or departing in the evening; please request a price for an additional night. You may wish to check evening trains from Kemble Station (7 miles from Tetbury) before making a decision.
