Estimados/as congresistas:

Corpus methods for descriptive translation studies
Over the last 20 years corpus resources and tools have considerably affected translation research and practice. In this
presentation I will focus on the intersection of corpus linguistics and descriptive translation studies. I will first provide
an outline of results of investigations addressing different levels of generality, from individual translator style to so‐
called translation universals. Then I will present an overview of corpus‐based techniques which have been applied to
the study of translated texts, and discuss methodological issues regarding aspects of corpus compilation and analysis.
Finally, I will consider some technological and theoretical advancements which seem promising for corpus‐based
translation studies, and suggest that a combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches is crucial to further
research in this area.

Spreading the word: the challenge of the corpus as an agent of change
The objective of the publicly‐funded project 'An Investigation of Genres of Assessed Writing in British Higher
Education' was to identify and describe the kinds of texts university students actually write. The findings from this
investigation were not predictable – as lecturers, writing tutors, textbook writers, academics and/or students we all
know something about some kinds of student writing, and it is easy for us to jump to the conclusion that the types of
writing we are familiar with are the ones that others also know and use. Lack of information about the varied
purposes and linguistic features of university assignments leads to inequitable assessment practices, however: writing
tutors often overlook important minority genres, lecturers do not make explicit the requirements of the assignment
tasks they set, and students from alternative social, cultural or disciplinary backgrounds sometimes fail to conform to
the conventions that their lecturers require. The British Academic Written English (BAWE) corpus was the major
outcome of the project, and involved the use of new annotation systems and sophisticated corpus query tools.
Analysis of the corpus revealed substantial differences in student writing across disciplines, levels of study and
‘families’ of genres, but although these findings had implications for assessment practices across the academy, they
were only published in papers addressing fellow corpus linguists, and were expressed in ways incomprehensible to
most teaching staff and students outside our discipline. This situation seems to be a common one, and might have
continued had it not been for a funding stipulation which required us to further our research in collaboration with a
non‐academic partner – an industry or a charitable institution. We chose the British Council, an organisation
‘specialising in international educational and cultural opportunities’. It maintains the popular LearnEnglish website,
featuring CALL style exercises – gap‐fill, multiple‐choice and matching – and favouring ‘fun’ activities that fit easily into
traditional language teaching syllabuses. Until now LearnEnglish has offered almost no material for academic
purposes, despite the role of the British Council as an advocate of British higher education. This paper describes the
process of selecting and presenting corpus evidence to the new LearnEnglish audience, transforming traditional
exercises by linking cluster and keyword findings to genre‐ and discipline‐specific Sketch Engine displays and our own
‘Wordtree’ corpus interface. It is hoped that this use of corpus evidence will help to bring about institutional change,
as well as stimulating further corpus‐driven research.

Revisiting Corpus Linguistics ‐ and its rather radical implications
This paper aims to revisit some milestones and key concepts in the development of Corpus Linguistics in the light of
more recent thinking both in CL and related disciplines. What started as a purely quantitative extra dimension in the
description of language ended up affecting the whole methodology of description and also the type of theoretical
statements that can be made. Nowadays the linguist takes for granted such concepts as multi‐word units, whether
they are called chunks, n‐grams or lexical bundles. This assumption has not always been acceptable and studies which
have made use of corpus evidence have provided the necessary stepping stones to get where we are. The
confirmation that this has been the right direction comes to us from many quarters. For example some of the latest
developments in the field of economics and cognitive thinking ‐ see Kachnemann 2011 who analyses different modes
of thought ‐ seem to strongly support insights derived from the bottom‐up approach offered by Corpus Linguistics.

Getting to know your corpus
Corpora are not easy to get a handle on. The usual way of getting to grips with text is to read it, but corpora are
mostly too big to read (and not designed to be read). We show, with English and Spanish examples, how keyword lists
(of one corpus vs. another) are a direct, practical and fascinating way to explore the characteristics of corpora, and of
text types. Our method is to classify the top one hundred keywords of corpus1 vs. corpus2, and corpus2 vs. corpus1.
This promptly reveals a range of contrasts between all the pairs of corpora we apply it to. We also present improved
maths for keywords, and briefly discuss quantitative comparisons between corpora. All the methods discussed (and
almost all of the corpora) are available in the Sketch Engine, a leading corpus query tool.

Development of Language Resources, from handicrafts to automated production
Corpus Linguistics and Language Technologies share, at least, one interest: the exploitation of linguistic data. Both
areas require tools that assist in the exploitation of texts, that is, in the extraction of relevant information from large
quantities of text. These tools, in turn, require resources with language‐dependent information. These are called
“Language Resources” and include (i) lexica with morphosyntactic, syntactic and lexical semantic information of words
and (ii) texts that are annotated with this information to become examples upon which to learn predictive models.
Text annotation includes also information relating two languages, or two variants of the same language, for diachronic
studies, for instance. For decades, Language Resources have been made by hand. The exercise is very expensive in
terms of experts and in terms of time. The consequence has been a scarcity of these raw materials: not all languages,
not all variants are covered, hindering the development of tools and therefore hindering the exploitation of particular
collections of texts. During the last decades, significant efforts have been devoted to overcome that bottleneck. The
automatic production of such resources is becoming a consolidated area of research in Natural Language Processing.
Beyond the theoretical and technological challenges, the expected impact is that the production costs are reduced
and the coverage enlarged and, therefore, the proliferation of tools for exploiting texts in more languages, more
variants. In this talk I would like to present where we are in the area of automatic acquisition of Language Resources. I
will survey the production of annotated text with morphosyntax and syntactic information, the production of rich
lexica with verbal subcategorization frame information, lexical semantic information and bilingual glossary production
and I will present the results of the projects PANACEA and METANET4U in which our Institute has participated.
