    DEBT MARKET REVIEW

After hefty gains in October, and reaching multi-year high at the start of the month, the equity market saw moderate correction in the month of November. Nifty lost 2% over the month to close at 6176. Global cues were positive during the month, with Federal Reserve Vice Chairperson Janet Yellen expressing her view that the Fed will keep its stimulus program intact until the U.S. economy shows more strength and stability. Takeaways from Chinese Third Plenary Session were positive on the potential for major macroeconomic reforms, albeit at a gradual pace.

Domestic data points showed improvement. After decelerating to a 4.4% growth in 1Q, India's 2QFY14 GDP growth improved to 4.8% against a consensus expectation of 4.6%. Agriculture grew by 4.6%, helped by above normal monsoons. Industry growth was at 2.3% with improvements in all sub sectors. However, services growth at 5.9% came in at sub 6% levels for the first time since 2005. Meanwhile, September IIP rose by 2%, significantly above that of 0.4% in Aug, but was below street estimates. October WPI came in at 7% vs 6.5% in the previous month as vegetable prices remained high. Core WPI picked up marginally, from 2% in September to 2.1% in October. Notably, August WPI was revised up to 7% from 6.1% earlier. Similarly, October CPI too inched up to 10.1% from 9.8% in September. However, core CPI eased to 8.1% from 8.4% last month.

Sector-wise, the top gainers were capital goods, metal and auto indices, which were up by 7.2%, 2.5% and 2% respectively. In the capital goods space L&T, Jaiprakash Associates and BHEL were among the top gainers. In the metal space Tata Steel, Jindal Steel and Hindalco moved up during the month. In the auto sector, M&M's farm equipment segment had robust quarter with stable tractor market share. Meanwhile, Tata Motor's results continued to be bouyed by the JLR segment while the domestic business disappointed again. Maruti Suzuki, M&M and Tata Motors were the major gainers from the auto sector.

Consumer Durable and FMCG index closed in red down 8.9% & and 3.7% each respectively. Titan, ITC, HUL and Asian Paints were among the major losers.

    Capital flows:

FIIs were net buyers in equity to the tune of Rs 8116 crore in the month of November and bought equity worth Rs 97049 crore from January 2013 to November 2013. (Source: SEBI)

    Outlook:

November saw last leg of 2Q earnings with disappointing results from SBI, BHEL and PNB; and strong numbers from from Sun Pharma and Mahindra & Mahindra. On the policy front, the next RBI policy meet is due on December 18, and any rate action would be determined by food inflation, among other data points.

Going ahead, markets will keenly watch out for the results of the four state elections held over November, as these are heralded as a key indicator for the outcome of the 2014 general elections. Meanwhile, the government actions on the divestment front to help it achieve fiscal targets will also be in the focus point in December. The cabinet approved Power Grid's FPO in November with the offer having commenced on December 3. Indian Oil and Coal India stake sales are also on the cards. PM is likely to take a call on Balco and Hindustan Zinc stake sales.

Diesel deregulation continued with eleventh consecutive 50 paise hike in diesel, oil minister had indicated that current monthly gradual hikes will be continued rather than any steep rise as that would stoke inflation. The EGoM accepted Telecom Commission's recommendations on spectrum reserve price, at 25% lower than that of the failed Mar'13 auction. The auction is likely to take place in January 2014.

    Shri Nobutaka KitajimaCIO - Equity

    EQUITY MARKET REVIEW

On the global front, hopes that the US Fed maintains a modestly positive-but cautious-outlook on the US economy. FOMC believes growth in the second half of 2013 might be somewhat weaker than previously anticipated, but that the economy will continue to grow. The employment situation continues to improve-albeit very slowly-with significant slack remaining in the labor market. The Fed's still concerned about the impact of government spending cuts, budget battles and the possibility of another government shutdown or debt-ceiling crisis. FOMC members believe the stance on fiscal policy remains one of the biggest headwinds over the medium term and raised concerns on "repeated fiscal impasses" on consumer and business confidence. Economic improvement is dependent on consumer spending. The consumer sentiment is seen a downside on account of uncertainty surrounding prospective fiscal deliberations could weigh negatively. The release of minutes of the FOMC impacted the Indian equity and bond markets. The yields closed mixed but markets remained broadly under pressure on the back of concerns of potential change of US policy on India. The rupee showed a new low but bounced back from the low showing appreciation against the dollar.

India's Fiscal Deficit for Apr - Oct 13 period stood at Rs.4.57 lakh cr which was at 84.40% of full year budgeted estimates. Monthly WPI inflation stood at 7.00% in October 2013, as against 6.46% for September 2013. At the weekly auctions, the RBI unveiled a new 10 year security 8.83%.

The measures announced by the RBI are intended to address inflationary pressures so as to provide a stable nominal anchor for the economy and creating a conducive environment of revitalisation for sustainable growth. Hence WPI and CPI numbers as well as future expectations of inflationary pressures will play a very key role in the future course of action by the RBI. Weekly gsec supply of 14000-15000 crores in H2 FY 14 may also continue to exert pressure on bond yields. RBI has hiked the priority sector credit limit to Rs.10 cr from Rs.5 cr.

RBI's policy tone indicates more of selective liquidity support, but intention to continue with tight liquidity stance. Given the busy season the probability of liquidity easing is low. The overnight rate continue to hover around the MSF rate (now at 8.75%) rather than it moving closer to the repo rate. The month ending on 29th November 13, witnessed a fall in average daily net borrowing under LAF at Rs.34,660 cr as compared to previous week's average of Rs.41,059 cr. The average MSF borrowing stood at Rs.7,747 cr. Total liquidity shortfall therefore is Rs. 42,407 cr. Money market rates eased a little during the month with call rates ending at 7.63% as against 8.62% at the beginning of the month. The CBLO rates ended at 6.99%, from the beginning of the month at 7.88%. The 5-yr OIS closed at 8.36%, higher from Nov 1 of 8.23% while the 1-yr OIS closed at 8.45% against 01/11 closing of 8.43% which saw a high of 8.65 on Nov 26 closed at last month levels.

The Indian Rupee has seen a minor pull back from a level close to 64 to almost 62. Although the currency is still weak, the market is fine with the new norm above 60 provided there is not too much volatility and fluctuation. The opening and closing rates during the month of November were 61.73 and 62.45 respectively. Crude prices have been steadily increasing in November from Rs. 106.88 to Rs. 111.63. The fall in crude prices major boost for our economy (CAD) Post Iran Nuclear deal with US the positive benefit to India would be ability to buy oil from Iran and arrange for some payments in INR which would reduce the oil import bill which is currently fully in USD.

Bond Markets : The shorter to medium end of the yield curve looks attractive as the carry in the shorter end is still high. A steepening in the yield curve in the longer term is observed with a pivot of 3 years and this trend may continue.

    Outlook:

With this, we believe that the short term rates are likely to harden during the end of December, 2013 and long term rates would take cue from the uncertain outcomes from the State Election results, the key economic numbers coming from US and the announcements post the FED meeting on 18th December, 2013. The long term yields are likely to be biased on the higher side.

What is SIP?Like a recurring deposit, Systematic Investment Plan works on the principle of regular investments, where you put aside a small amount every month. What’s more, you have the opportunity to invest in a Mutual Fund by making small periodic investments in place of a huge one-time investment. In other words, Systematic Investment Plan has brought mutual fund within the reach of common man as it enables anyone to invest with a small amount on a regular basis.

Mutual Fund investments are subject to market risks, read all scheme related documents carefully.
