Liebherr cranes are the cranes of choice for installing wind power systems

The use of wind power has been known for centuries. Whereas previously the mechani-cal energy of the windmill was used, windmills are now used mainly to generate electrical energy. The development of ever more powerful wind power systems is continuing apace and the height of the towers on which the systems are mounted is increasing. Liebherr is meeting the challenges of these developments with cranes with an optimised perform-ance and new jib systems designed to meet the needs of the wind power industry. In-novative technology, high quality and efficiency combined with a long service life have ensured a leading position in the world market for Liebherr mobile and crawler cranes.

Mobile crane LTM 1400-7.1

Optimised load capacityThe LTM 1400-7.1 is the optimum mobile crane for installation of 1 MW class wind power systems on towers up to approxi-mately 70 m high. Smaller systems can be mounted on corre-spondingly higher towers. Unaffected by wind and lateral solar radiation, the new Y-pattern guying ensures that the telescopic boom is aligned in its correct geometry at all times. Additional stabilisation of the boom system is provided by a spacer in conjunction with lattice jibs.

Compact and extremely versatileThe LTM 1400-7.1 is the most compact crane in its class. This makes it particularly suitable for the erection of wind power systems in mountain and coastal regions. All axles are steered, with the active speed-dependent rear axle steering being in-tegrated into the steering system. Six steering modes, prese-lectable from fixed programmes, offer the smallest turning radii, precise and stable travel even at high speeds, substantially reduced tyre wear, and at the same time provide the highest level of safety.

Short assembly times means high efficiencyA feature unique on the market is the facility to self-assemble the Y-pattern guying on the crane without the need for an auxiliary crane. A 60 t ballast in-cluding winch 2 and winch 3 can be installed with a single lift. With a transport width of only 3 m, the “60 t package” can be transported on a low-loader. The facility to hydraulically increase the ballast radius from 5.6 m to 6.6 m reduces the transport of ballast for a number of applications. A practical design also means that short assembly times are achieved even when fitting lattice jibs.

Mobile crane LTM 1500-8.1

Successful crane conceptSince 1988, more than 100 eight-axle LTM 1500-8.1 cranes have been delivered to cus-tomers throughout the world. It is the stand-ard crane for the erection of wind power sys-tems of the 1.5 MW class on towers up to more than 80 m high. With the development of Y-pattern guying and the spacer, Liebherr has met the load capacities required for the wind power industry.

Multivariable boom systemThe 50 m long telescopic boom can be ex-tended to 84 m using only three additional telescopic sections. With additional jibs such as fixed or luffing lattice jibs, 63 m or 91 long, and a whip line and assembly jib, also hydraulically adjustable, the LTM 1500-8.1 offers a particularly wide range of applica-tions.

Crawler crane LR 1350/1The SDWB systemThe 27 m long derrick boom with a maximum of 200 t suspended ballast or ballast trailer enables lift-ing heights of up to 120 m to be obtained on the main boom and up to 150 m on the jib. The ballast trailer can be telescoped from a 11 m up to a 15 m radius, while the suspended ballast can be moved via the derrick jib in this reach range.

The SLF systemA fixed jib is mounted on the SL main boom. Using this simple system, a system length of 114 m can be assembled and erected in the minimum erection time. A derrick boom is not necessary.

The SWF systemWith a main boom of 54 m, a luffing jib of 66 m and a fixed jib 36 m long permanently mounted on the luffing jib, it is possible to erect a total system of 156 m with-out a derrick boom.

Efficient transport logisticsThe LR 1350/1 crane concept is based on the latest drive and control technology, is easy to transport, has a lightweight boom system with a very high lifting ca-pacity and can be efficiently erected and transported. The extremely compact dimensions of the basic unit – crane length 9.7 m, track width 8.4 m and maximum turning radius 8 m – are unrivalled in the 350 t class. With a minimum transport weight of 40 t without winches, the basic machine can move anywhere in the world without restrictions and can be self-erected using optimum accessories.

Crawler crane LR 1400/2High functionalityA multifunctional boom system, simple and safe crane assembly and economical transport of the crane components are the convincing features of the LR 1400/2. The 400 t crane offers a boom module with the main boom and jib in lightweight and heavyweight versions as well as the derrick device with a telescopic suspended ballast or ballast trailer to increase the load capacity. These systems enable a universal adaptation of the crane to the various operating conditions.

Boom systemsBoom systems tailored to the special require-ments of wind power were developed from known boom combinations. One example is the SF2 system that enables 2.5 MW class wind power systems to be erected on 80 m high tow-ers. Using a derrick system, it is possible to achieve tower heights of as high as 100 m.

Crawler crane LR 1400/2-WHigh mobility due to narrow trackA track running gear only 4.8 m wide was de-veloped to enable the crawler crane to travel on narrow access paths. When completely erected, the LR 1400/2-W can move on exist-ing paths from system to system. The supports with the fitted support plates are swung back-wards or forwards to the running gear when travelling. When lifting, the crane is supported by 11.5 m wide star-pattern supports. The fol-lowing systems are offered as a special wind power boom: SF2 system, main boom with fixed jib and, for higher load requirements, the SDF2B system consisting of a main boom with fixed jib, derrick and suspended ballast.

Double-jointed for easy corneringBy means of two slewing connections, the chassis, intermediate section with supports and crane superstructure can be rotated as required relative to each other, thus enabling the crawler crane to negotiate even the tightest bends with-out the ground surface being damaged by the tracks. When changing the direction of travel, the crane is supported on the star-pattern sup-

ports, the raised running gear rotates to the new required direction of travel and, after the supports are retracted and the centre section and crane superstructure again rotated to the new direction of travel, the crane can continue in the required new direction. The crane running gear, the slewing sections and the supports are controlled by remote radio control.

Crawler crane LR 1750Wide application spectrumThe LR 1750 offers the required high load capac-ity for erection of the latest generation of wind power systems. Special boom systems that can be used universally, derrick boom with telescopic suspended ballast or ballast trailer and support-ing devices for use as a “pedestal crane” char-acterise the 750 t crawler crane’s wide range of applications. A practical design ensures simple, safe crane assembly and short erection times.

The SLK boom and jib systemThe SLK boom and jib system was developed specially for the erection of wind power systems. It enables long main booms up to 135 m hook height with a reduced ballast and without a der-rick boom to be erected. During erection, the front section of the main boom is first inclined downwards and is then raised using a winch after the lower section of the main boom has reached the erected working position.

Lattice boom mobile crane LG1550High mobilityThe LG 1550 has become established as the ideal crane for the erection of wind power systems of the 2 MW to 3 MW class on towers over 100 m high. The eight-axle LG 1550 arrives at the site complete with a slewing plat-form and supports and is thus ready for action in the shortest possible time. The folding arms of the star-pat-tern supports can be completely folded into the vehicle width. This enables the crane to negotiate the narrowest of access paths. Four of the eight axles are fitted with twin tyres. This means that there are 24 wheels to provide the load-bearing capacity necessary for the crane to move on-site with the major part of its equipment and the bal-last.

The boom and jib systemsThe SL3H and SL5H boom and jib systems enable hook heights of over 100 m to be reached. With inclined as-sembly jib, the SL main boom can be erected without a derrick system. The new “articulated main boom „SLK“ enables wind power systems to be erected up to a 118 m hook height. This also saves the transportation and as-sembly of a derrick system. The long boom is first erected with the upper section inclined downwards. After the lower section has reached the steep working position, the top section is raised using a winch and held cushioned against a fixed stop by spring assemblies.

Lattice boom mobile crane LG1750Modular conceptThe LG 1750 boasts load capacities sufficient for the erection of wind power systems of the 5 MW class. For the LG 1750, Liebherr uses the slewing crane platform and the boom and jib systems from the LR 1750 crawler crane together with a completely new, state-of-the-art eight-axle chassis. With the supports fully retracted, the 3 m wide chassis has the ad-vantage of being able to travel on the narrow paths within the wind farm from system to system.

Interchangeable boom and jib systemThe LR 1750’s complete boom and jib system is used for the LG 1750. Because of the rigid design of the star-pattern supports, the extraordinarily wide support base measuring 16 m x 16 m and the slew-ing platform extension, the load capacity of LG 1750 can even be increased beyond that of the crawler crane, with ballast also being reduced.
