What isshelteredhousing?Sheltered housingis purpose built orspecially adaptedhousing designedfor older people. It allows you tolive independentlyas part of thecommunity but, with theadditional securityof a shelteredhousing manager(warden) availableto call on in anemergency.

All of Southwark’s sheltered housing schemes aredifferent, but in most cases the schemes are made upof a number of self-contained, individual flats. Thesehave communal facilities such as a residents’ loungewith a small kitchen, laundry room and public

Have you considered sheltered housing?Are you independent-minded, over 60 and want toget more out of life? Have you considered movinginto Southwark Council’s sheltered housing?

Your home, your space, your choiceSouthwark’s sheltered housing offers the privacy ofhaving your own self-contained flat (a bedroom,kitchen, living room and bathroom) with anattractive residents’ lounge where you can meetother residents. There are also communal gardensand a laundry.

Safe and secureAn on site scheme housingmanager provides daytimesupport and there is a 24hour pull-cord alarm systemin each room. After 4pm on weekends and BankHolidays, security checks and emergencies are dealtwith by older personssupport workers.

Southwark Council ensures that all tenants that livein sheltered housing will be treated with respect,without prejudice or discrimination.

Social activitiesSheltered housing schemes have a lively range ofsocial activities for residents. Most schemes havemorning or afternoon tea and coffee sessions andgames evenings. Most of the schemes have regularsocial events such as:

• fish suppers

• musical evenings

• arts and crafts activities

• keep fit classes

• training courses (e.g. computing)

• organised outings to entertainment venues orplaces of interest

Sheltered housing servicesIn many sheltered housing schemes there areadditional services for residents:

• hairdresser visits

• weekly shopping scheme

• mobile libraries

Guest roomsA guest room may be availablefor your relatives or friends to stay during periods ofillness, or for people who may have travellingdifficulties in visiting you.

Choose the best scheme for youAll residents are different. Some wish to be moreindependent, others wish to have more activities andservices provided.

Not everyone wants the same from us, so each of oursheltered housing schemes is different. You can nowchoose the right scheme to suit you.

Support in your home

The sheltered housing manager (warden):• undertakes a daily visit to all residents - but will not

enter your flat without being invited, unless theybelieve that you are in need of help

• is available during the day to provide support andadvice and is ‘on call’ at other times to deal withemergencies

• helps to organise social/group activities for residents

• can arrange emergency or temporary help

• provides planned needs assessment and supportplanning, which can help you to live independentlyand access the support you need.

You can also receive a visit from one of our out ofoffice hours support workers.

Help if you are unwellIf you are taken ill or have an accident the shelteredhousing officer can call a doctor, get in touch withrelatives and organise other services such as meals|on wheels.

Helping you to help yourselfThe sheltered housing manager will assist residents toform Tenant Associations so that residents canorganise activities for themselves, both in and outsidethe home.

The intercom/alarm systemEach flat in a sheltered housing scheme has anemergency alarm system that can be operated by apull chord. Residents use this to contact theirsheltered housing officer in an emergency.

Helping you to pay your rent and support chargeThere are ways that we can help you pay your rentand support charge when you move into shelteredhousing, i.e. Housing Benefit and a SupportingPeople subsidy. To find out more please contact us.
