Four students from UTCMediaCity have just completed the Youth Leaders Programme with R io Ferdinand
Foundation Manchester. After six months of working together, the students
designed and delivered projects in football, drama and dance at a local primary
school, Lark Hill. All the youth leaders were taught project management skills as
they planned their project, coming up with aims and objectives, undertaking
tasks such as risk assessments and workshop plans.
The first of the projects was designed by Mia and Nell, who decided to work together, as both girls have aspirations of becoming make up artists and wanted to learn about special effects make up. They decided that they would create a music video with the children to the song ‘Thriller’, which would involve creating zombie characters through make up and teaching the children a dance routine.
The second youth leader project was designed by Jess. Jess decided to design a drama project around bullying. This was to bring awareness to the fact that not all bullying that occurs within schools is student to student; that it can also come from the teachers. Through drama, she wanted to address the difficult subject of bullying and show ways of dealing with it to make it stop. She developed 6 drama workshops alongside her professional mentor that included a positive news time; where the children would all share anything they had done to help someone else. She also created freeze frame scenarios in which the children could all play a different role, such as victim, bully and teacher, helping the children to understand how someone else might be feeling and what to do in order to help.
The third project was run by David, who decided to run a football project. The aim for his project was to give younger children opportunities to succeed and build confidence. He wanted to do this in order to become a positive role model for kids in his community and help to promote a healthy lifestyle. He spent time planning how he would spend his budget to successfully deliver the project and came up with workshop plans alongside his professional mentor Jordan.
For the past 6 weeks, the students have delivered their youth leaders sessions to year 3 at Lark Hill Primary School. All four of them have done amazingly and it has been great to watch their confidence grow. Their projects came to an end yesterday, and when we asked the girls how they found it they told us:-
“It made me more confident talking to both people and in front of a group as it pushed me out of my comfort zone. It was fun because we got to meet new people!”
RFF Manchester would like to congratulate all four students on their hard work; it has really paid off!
Skills North West 21st & 22nd March
Our students were asked to film and produce a short 3 minute film,
highlighting the Skills North West event, capturing the busy, fun and
interactive atmosphere of the two day event held at Event City this
week.
Donia Aramesh, a year 12 TV and Film student from UTC Media
City UK was selected to be the face of Skills North West,
presenting and taking part in the fun activities. Donia was asked
to create an upbeat and fun atmosphere in the video and speak
to a range of visitors and exhibitors to produce excellent footage
from the event.
The group of TV and Film BTEC students from UTC spent two full
days capturing talks, interactive stands and the skills showcase
of events such as dance, drama, music, cookery and floristry.
They were asked to interview event attendees finding out about
their experience of the show and what they have taken away
from coming along to the event.
Donia said “it was amazing that I was selected to be the face of
Skills North West, I had always wanted to have a go at
presenting to a camera. Everyone was really friendly and there
was so much going on it was easy to capture this great event. I
was nervous at first but after I had spoken and met with a few
people I got more confident and I was able to really enjoy
myself”.
On Wednesday 21st March a small group of Year 12 and 13s
went to film the Mayor of Manchester’s Green Summit at
Manchester Central. This 7 hour event was live streamed to the
Greater Manchester Government Website and to the BBC. It
was watched by 3.4 thousand people on the Government page
alone and will stay active on the BBC page for a whole month.
The students were, quite simply, AMAZING. The video content
you see on the BBC page was created by our very talented
students.

Mr Kelly said “This was a huge achievement for the
college and I just want to say a big thank you to
everyone who helped to make it a success”.
This is Elle Stark from Year 13 who managed to persuade Mani, of the Stone Roses to come in and be
interviewed for her Unit 3 exam project. Elle has been given the brief of providing a representation of a
music sub-culture and Elle has chosen to do the Manchester indie music scene.
UTC Media City UK represented our building
for Sport Relief on Friday 23rd March.
We challenged our students and staff to zip
wire across Media City.
The event kicked off at midday with a number of famous faces involved.
ZIPWIRE across the Piazza
TACKLE an assault course through the gardens
ZORB across the lawn
RACE down a speed tunnel
SCORE a penalty against goalkeeping legend, Shay Given
SHOOT a bow in archery
JOIN a celebrity fitness class
Such a fun event to raise money for a worthy cause.
On Thursday 29th March we are having a bake sale in College and a non-uniform day raising money for BBC Children
in need and Cash for Kids.
We are taking part in Key 103 Cash for Kids Super hero day
On Friday 4th May you can come to college dressed as your favourite super
hero.
Staff and students can pay a minimum of £1 donation for taking part.
All proceeds will go to Cash for Kids.
Cash for Kids aims to make a real difference to the lives of children and young people across Greater Manchester who need a helping hand. This year, we’re teaming up with The Teenage Cancer Trust for Superhero Day, and helping to raise funds to provide life changing care so teenagers living in Manchester do not have to face cancer alone.
Please donate to our page and share with friends here…
