Life Cycles: Lesson 2Animal Needs

Expectations:1. Listen carefully2. Work hard3. Be responsible

Review:Scientists ask questions, make predictions, then test those predictions.

We learned by observing chickens that they need; food, water, space/shelter, and air.

We now want to know if other animals need the same things.

Good Scientists Ask Questions

What do fish need to stay alive?

What do you think, or predict, fish will need to stay alive?

Lets observe some fish:

What did you observe the fish doing?

What did you learn that they need?

Fish Need Food

Different foods: Plants and/or animals

But all fish still need some kind of food.

What else did you observe that the fish need?

Fish need water

Fish need water to swim.

There is also something else in the water that they need.

Do you have a prediction about what else is in the water they need?

Fish Need AirFish need to breath too.  Lets observe how fish breath in water.

Is there anything else a fish needs?

A Fish Needs Space/Shelterhttp://youtu.be/89H4VQp2Mpg

http://youtu.be/hyYW0mr-e7k

What did these fish use for shelter?

What happens if they don't have enough space?

Draw conclusions: What we learned

Chickens need food, water, air, and space.

Fish need food, water, air, and space also!

What do we predict other animals will need?

Food, water, air, and space/shelter

Good Scientists

1. Ask questions2. Make predictions3. Try to find the answer4. Draw conclusions5. Communicate findings

I learned about chicken and fish needs.  I wonder if all animals have the same needs?

Nest lesson we will look at the needs of people.

What do WE need to stay alive?

Assignment:

Complete the fish sections of the chart.   Animal Need: Food Need: Water Need: Air Need: Space

Chicken Chickens get food by eating bugs, and plants. They use their talons and beak to find and eat many types of food.

Chickens get some water through the food they eat and some from drinking it from puddles and other water sources.

Chickens breath air through their nostrils on their beaks.

Chickens need space to grow and look for food.  They also need a safe place to roost for the night, like a tree or coop.

I had fun learning and working with you this lesson.

Keep your eyes open, scientist!  I will see you next lesson.
