Construction: Began on August 9, 1173 &was finished in the year 1350 = 177 years!
The tower has 8 floors, and on the 8th are7 bells.
There are 293 steps from the ground to the8th floor!
The ‘lean’ (to the North) was noticed during the construction of the 3rd floor.
The lean was corrected by building the next 3 floors parallel to the ground, which then made it lean more to the south.
Until 1990, the tower leaned at a 10* angle!
Why does the tower lean? The ground that it’s built on is not good for sucha large, heavy building! It is made of uneven sand and clay layers, which makes the groundsink more in certain places.
It is built on a riverbed, and only 6 ft. abovesea level.
Efforts to keep it standing:
1934: 361 holes were drilled into the base and filled with mortar, which caused it to lean more.
1993: 650 tons of lead were hung from one sideTo try and stop the lean-it only worked for awhile.
1999: Removal of ground from under the highside. This straightened the tower 16 inches!
1998: Steel cables used to “hold up” the tower while underground work was done.
