AUGUST 2018

Sunday Worship: 9am Sunday School 10:30am 301-791-3576

FROM THE PASTOR DESK

‘Tis Love! ‘Tis Love! Thou diedst for me; I hear thy whisper in my heart.

The morning breaks, the shadows flee, Pure Universal Love thou art:

To me, to all, thy mercies move -- Thy nature, and thy name, is LOVE. ---Charles Wesley

Come, O Thou Traveler Unknown is considered one of the most significant and best hymns of the

great hymnwriter Charles Wesley. It’s in our United Methodist Hymnal, but we don’t sing it often

because it is 14 verses long. The hymn is an interpretation of Genesis 32:24-32—the story of Jacob

wrestling with an angel at Peniel. It is also an allegory of Wesley’s own story of struggle and

surrender to the persistent love of God. I invite you to read the story of Jacob, and find yourself in the

bright morning of God’s amazing, forgiving, redeeming, persistent love. I’ve included the hymn lyrics

in this newsletter, so that you might step into the story with Jacob, Charles Wesley and me.

Speaking of that love . . . During August we’ll be learning what it means to live in the love of God.

We’re a bit less connected as a church during the summer, but you can do this: while you’re on

vacation, or at camp, relaxing by the pool or shopping for school supplies; between hope and

disappointment, self-expectations and self-doubt and in those moments when you wonder how to get

where you want to be in life. . . Pick up a cool drink, find a comfy spot, and open your bible to

Ephesians 1. Here’s the reality-check we need. Here is where we remember who we are in the

eyes of our Creator, and where we claim the blessings of knowing the God who is Love. We are:

Blessed with every heavenly blessing

Chosen before the foundations of the world

Destined for adoption

Showered freely with grace

Beloved

Redeemed

Given an inheritance

Granted a divine purpose

Marked and sealed by the Holy Spirit as a pledge

“Why me, you might ask? Paul answers: so that . . .“you might live for the praise of his glory.”

Our August series, “Live in Love”, is based on several important passages in Ephesians, where Paul

teaches us how to live in the reality of God’s love. All who struggle to find acceptance, or peace, or

love, or security, or happiness, or a sure sense of identity (in other words, all of us) can find solid

Life@Benevola “Together we are called to worship

and witness, grow and give, love and

live for the glory of God.”

footing in the infinite value God has given us in Christ. That new perspective changes us from the

inside out. It calls God’s people together in unity and strength, and forms our purpose together to

worship and witness, grow and give, love and live for the glory of God. I’ll see you in church!

In Christ’s Love,

Pastor Cindy

COME, O THOU TRAVELER UNKNOWN

Come, O thou Traveler unknown,Whom still I hold, but cannot see! My company before is gone, And I am left alone with Thee; With Thee all night I mean to stay, And wrestle till the break of day.

I need not tell Thee who I am, My misery and sin declare; Thyself hast called me by my name, Look on Thy hands, and read it there; But who, I ask Thee, who art Thou? Tell me Thy name, and tell me now.

In vain Thou strugglest to get free, I never will unloose my hold! Art Thou the Man that died for me? The secret of Thy love unfold; Wrestling, I will not let Thee go, Till I Thy name, Thy nature know.

Wilt Thou not yet to me reveal Thy new, unutterable Name? Tell me, I still beseech Thee, tell; To know it now resolved I am; Wrestling, I will not let Thee go, Till I Thy Name, Thy nature know.

’Tis all in vain to hold Thy tongue Or touch the hollow of my thigh; Though every sinew be unstrung, Out of my arms Thou shalt not fly; Wrestling I will not let Thee go Till I Thy name, Thy nature know.

What though my shrinking flesh complain, And murmur to contend so long? I rise superior to my pain, When I am weak, then I am strong And when my all of strength shall fail, I shall with the God-man prevail.

My strength is gone, my nature dies, I sink beneath Thy weighty hand, Faint to revive, and fall to rise; I fall, and yet by faith I stand; I stand and will not let Thee go Till I Thy Name, Thy nature know.

Yield to me now, for I am weak, But confident in self-despair; Speak to my heart, in blessings speak, Be conquered by my instant prayer; Speak, or Thou never hence shalt move, And tell me if Thy Name is Love.

’Tis Love! ’tis Love! Thou diedst for me! I hear Thy whisper in my heart; The morning breaks, the shadows flee, Pure, universal love Thou art; To me, to all, Thy bowels move; Thy nature and Thy Name is Love.

My prayer hath power with God; the grace Unspeakable I now receive; Through faith I see Thee face to face, I see Thee face to face, and live! In vain I have not wept and strove; Thy nature and Thy Name is Love.

I know Thee, Savior, who Thou art. Jesus, the feeble sinner’s friend; Nor wilt Thou with the night depart. But stay and love me to the end, Thy mercies never shall remove; Thy nature and Thy Name is Love.

The Sun of righteousness on me Hath rose with healing in His wings, Withered my nature’s strength; from Thee My soul its life and succor brings; My help is all laid up above; Thy nature and Thy Name is Love.

Contented now upon my thigh I halt, till life’s short journey end; All helplessness, all weakness I On Thee alone for strength depend; Nor have I power from Thee to move: Thy nature, and Thy name is Love.

Lame as I am, I take the prey, Hell, earth, and sin, with ease o’ercome; I leap for joy, pursue my way, And as a bounding hart fly home, Through all eternity to prove.

Worship in August

“Live in Love”

Sermons in August will cover a series of passages in Ephesians, where Paul urges us to take on

a daunting task:

“Be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself

up for us.” (Ephesians 5:1-2)

In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul lays out an indisputable argument for living a life of love.

Human beings were created by God’s love, redeemed by Christ’s love, and received as children

of God. He then instructs us on how to make this love real through concrete actions rooted in—

and springing from—the very nature of God’s love. With the Spirit’s power, and willing human

hearts, we too find the power to create, to redeem, and to build one another up through

Christlike love.
