A Message from your President...

A question that is often asked of us is, “What does the Chamber do for my business?” In all honesty, that’s a tough question because the Chamber does things that affect businesses in different ways. And sometimes it’s necessary to toot our own horn.

So here goes…

The Look Local – Shop Local program is designed to make people aware of the shopping opportunities in our area and to

encourage local spending. When our business community is doing well, our city is doing well because tax dollars spent here, stay here.

Attractive shopping areas offering a diverse array of products are important to community vibrancy. The Development Corporation has an easier time recruiting new businesses to town if the schools are good, the workforce is available, and the quality-of-life is conducive to raising a family. That means decent housing, recreational activities (parks, ball fields, walking and bike trails, and so on), additional job opportunities for spouses, good transportation systems, cultural opportunities, and more all contribute to the desirability of a community.

Smaller businesses don’t have the same resources as our larger companies and depend on the Chamber to bring them low-cost or free business training programs, speaker events, networking opportunities, and advocacy at the local, state and federal level on matters that are important to our members.

The Chamber works with many other movers and shakers in town to continue to make progress in our quest for excellence. We are united in our desire to make the Clinton region a great place to live, work and play, and we work every day to reach that goal.

Mark your calendars for a few great events coming up.

The Clinton municipal and school board elections are coming up in November. We will be hosting a Candidate Forum on Wednesday, October 16th at the City Hall council chambers. This event is free and open to the public.

Join us for a great time at the airport October 17th. Steaks, Tunes and Balloons is the theme of this year’s event featuring a steak dinner, the music of Brooke Byam, hot air balloons, and optional scenic airplanes rides over the city. Call the Chamber to get signed up for a fun night of networking, good food and fun.

After a 15-year hiatus, we revived the community expo last year with about 20 participating businesses. We have already surpassed that number and are anticipating more than 30 vendors to participate in the 2019 Community Expo: River Cities – What We’re Made Of! Contact the Chamber at 563-242-5702 to get your company registered as a vendor. The event will be held Tuesday, November 12th at the Moose Lodge in Clinton from 5-8 pm. There will be business displays, prizes and giveaways, and fun contests. Be sure to set aside a couple of hours and bring your family to the Moose Lodge at 1936 Lincolnway to the 2019 Community Expo: River Cities – What We’re Made Of!

Enjoy the beauty of fall and all the area has to offer. Every day is a new opportunity to Celebrate Clinton!

Maureen

September FAB Winner The FAB Winner for the month of September is…. Mercy! We would like to give a special thank you to Jeff & Julie Eggers, and their grandchildren: Jordan, Mackenzie, Joselyn and Dane, for tending to the Mercy flowerbed for the 2019 season! Master Gardner’s, Carol Young and Vicky Johnson judged the beds for the fourth time this season, and were thrilled with the growth of each flowerbed. Their final judging session was no easier than the previous three. However, they enjoyed every visit and look forward to the FAB 2020 season!

Congratulations to Mercy, but mostly to Jeff, Julie, Jordan, Mackenzie, Joselyn and Dane for all your hard work and efforts to keep our riverfront looking FABulous! We look forward to working with all of you again next Spring!

Gary Puckett and The Union Gap to Perform at Wild Rose Casino & Resort

Wild Rose Casino & Resort presents an evening with GARY PUCKETT and THE UNION GAP live in concert on Sunday, November 3, 2019 in the Oakwood Grand Ballroom. Tickets will be $20, tax and convenience fees not included, with limited seating available. Doors will open at 4:00 p.m. with the concert starting at 5:00 p.m. Must be 21 years old or older to attend.

The beloved 60s musical group, Gary Puckett and The Union Gap, recorded six consecutive gold records and top ten Bill-board hits including “Young Girl,” “Woman Woman,” “Lady Will-power” and “Over You.” In 1968, Gary Puckett and The Union Gap sold more records than any other musicians including the Beatles.

Puckett proudly admits to working in the entertainment industry over 50 years, admitting, “My parents really started me with piano lessons. I started with a small band in high school. I tried college and other areas but realized I wanted to sing,” Puckett told AXS.com. From the time Puckett really started pursuing music to his first hit was eight years. After that, there were accolades and touring. The group would even play a command performance at the White House for Prince Charles and Prin-cess Anne by special invitation of the President.

Please join us for this timeless, memorable era-driven show!

Three 2019 LumberKings Chosen for Arizona Fall League

Three members of the 2019 LumberKings have been selected by the Miami Marlins to participate in the Arizona Fall League this year. Jerar Encarnacion, C.J. Carter, and Alex Vesia will join the Salt River Rafters this fall. The Arizona Fall League is a League composed of two divi-sions of three, with each team made up with players from five Major League clubs. The Marlins players will join prospects from the Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Minnesota Twins, and Tampa Bay Rays. Being selected to player is con-sidered an honor for the players, who will have the opportunity to showcase their skills among the best in the Minor Leagues across all levels.

The trio from the 2019 LumberKings will be joined by other Marlins prospects incuding former LumberKing Nick Neidert, Jose Devers, Victor Victor Mesa, and Vincenzo Aiello. Neidert

was a part of the record setting 2016 LumberKings who were the last Clinton squad in the playoffs before the 2019 Lum-berKings clinched last night in Burlington.Encarnacion, played in 68 of 69 games in the first half for the LumberKings, batting .298 and hitting 10 home runs before earning a promotion to High-A Jupiter at the Midwest League All-Star Break. United Way of Clinton County, Iowa Planning $650,000 Campaign

Rich Klahn, Assistant Vice President with Clinton National Bank, and Julie Witt, Office Service Manager with ACI, will lead this fall’s United Way campaign to raise $650,000.“The United Way campaign is where it all starts,” said Klahn. “We can’t help people who need help if the necessary funds aren’t available. I was born and raised in Clinton County and I care deeply about the people here. We step up in times of need.”

United Way focuses on improving the health, education, and financial stability of area residents. All children need a strong start in life, and the support to successful in school and work. People need the education and tools to secure a job that sup-ports them and their family throughout a lifetime. Individuals and families that have healthier beginnings and healthier lives build strong communities with a good quality of life.

Julie Witt added, “I’ve seen people in my own neighborhood who needed help. United Way programs help so many people with basic necessities and skills needed to succeed in life, and none of it would be possible without the generous support of Clinton County residents.”

“United Way is fortunate to have Rich and Julie lead this year’s campaign. Both have a strong personal commitment to improv-ing our community and helping people,” said Cheryl McCulloh, Executive Director of United Way of Clinton County, Iowa.

This year’s United Way campaign details will be announced at the official kickoff, scheduled for Sept. 19. For more informa-tion, visit clintonunitedway.org

CCC President Dr. Karen Vickers to Retire

Clinton Community College President Dr. Karen Vickers has announced her retirement effective December 31, 2019. Dr. Vickers has served Eastern Iowa Community Colleges (EICC) as President of Clinton Community College since 1996, provid-ing vision, leadership and direction to the college’s credit and non-credit programs and student development services.

In addition, Dr. Vickers serves as the EICC’s Vice-Chancellor for Student Development with responsibilities that include financial aid, records and registration, student activities and government, advising and athletics. She earned a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Iowa State University, a master’s degree in Counseling from Western Illinois University and a bachelor’s degree in Family Environment from Iowa State University.

“Karen has positively touched the lives of a countless number of students during her time at Clinton Community College,” said EICC Chancellor Don Doucette. “She has been a driving force not only for the college and EICC, but the entire Clinton community. On behalf of all of the students who have passed through the college’s doors, as well as the many faculty and staff with whom she has worked, I want to express my tremen-dous gratitude for all she has accomplished.”

Dr. Vickers joined Clinton Community College in 1984 as a Career Development Counselor, bringing experience from Indian Hills Community College where she directed the CETA Youth Programs and the Job Training Partnership Act. She served as a Career Development Counselor and soon was named Assistant Dean for Adult and Community Education where she expanded the GED programming to include DeWitt and Maquoketa. As Dean of the College, Dr. Vickers initiated an alternative high school in cooperation with the local school system and developed articulation agreements with the area high schools.

During her tenure as president, Dr. Vickers also served as Vice Chancellor for Academic Leadership, guiding instruction-al planning, offerings, and new program development which resulted in new programs. She chaired the faculty committee that developed the Quality Faculty Plan for EICC, facilitated faculty technology grants to encourage development of online courses and developed a new AS degree in pre-engineering. In her role as Vice-Chancellor of Student Development, Dr. Vickers’ efforts have resulted in a District-wide Advising Pro-cess, a new student intake and orientation process, additional services for military and veteran students, and new policies and procedures to address changing regulations in the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008.

Since 1996, Clinton Community College has added new tech-nologies such as the state-of-the-art Virtual and Nursing Labs, and has extended the use of technology to every classroom and wireless Internet access. As CCC president, Dr. Vickers spearheaded the local campaign for the successful passage of a $33 million capital bond referendum resulting in new facilities throughout, specifically construction of the new CCC Maquo-keta Center, the addition of new chemistry and physics labs, and the refurbishment of the biology and microbiology labs, Student Success Center and Business Services area.

Under Dr. Vickers’ leadership, Clinton Community College has been recognized as one of Iowa’s Top Workplaces by the Des Moines Register since 2012. In 2016, the main campus was renovated and the CCC Library was refurbished result-ing in a state-of-the-art hub for research and resources, a library available to all citizens throughout the service region. Dr. Vickers established the annual Community College Month celebration. She has facilitated the establishment of a variety of new scholarships including the High School Equivalency Tuition Voucher program which awards a 3-credit course to each graduate of the HiSET program. EICC Trustee and Paul B. Sharar Foundation Board Chair Bill Vetter commented, “Dr. Vickers’ vision, tireless commitment and leadership have made a dramatic positive impact on not only the lives of countless Clinton Community College students but to the residents of the greater Clinton metro area as well.”

In 2016, International Phi Theta Kappa honored Dr. Vickers with the Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction. College pres-idents and campus CEOs are selected for this award on the basis of outstanding efforts given toward promoting the goals of Phi Theta Kappa. She has been named Community Lead-er of the Year by the Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce, Business Associate of the Year by the American Business Women Association and YWCA Woman of Achievement.

Dr. Vickers has served on many boards including Clinton Regional Development Corporation, Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce, Mercy Medical Center, US Bank, Iowa State Uni-versity Extension Citizens Advisory Council, Community Action of Eastern Iowa Board, United Way of Clinton County, Jackson County Economic Alliance, City of Clinton Housing Authority, and the Clinton Community School District Facilities Planning Task Force. She is a member of Rotary International. In 2010, Clinton Community College was honored as the YWCA Business Leader of the Year. Dr. Vickers and her husband Dave live in Clinton, and are the parents of two daughters, and grandparents to one grandson.

Chancellor Doucette said the college will begin the process of selecting Vickers’ successor in the coming weeks.
