A Message from your President...

Christmas shopping is just around the corner for many of us. I know there are those organized individuals who were finished with their holiday preparations months ago, but I won’t be working on that until after Thanksgiving. For those of you that are like me, there’s still plenty of time to fill up your Look Local ~ Shop Local cards.

This is a program that we kicked off last year at Thanksgiving to encourage shopping locally and to

measure the dollars spent locally. The program has been very successful in DeWitt and we copied it – with their permission.

The Look Local ~ Shop Local program is designed to make people aware of the shopping opportunities in our area and to encourage local spending. When our business community is doing well, our city is doing well because tax dollars spent here, stay here. Our local businesses support the schools and the city with their sales and property tax dollars. They support our community through donations to civic organizations and good causes. They create entertainment opportunities through the parades, events and activities held in the Downtown and Lyons neighborhood. They support families through the wages paid to their employees. And they create economic development through their investment in a business in our community.

Looking locally first makes good sense for everybody. While you might not find everything you’re looking for here, there’s a good chance you can find a lot of what you’re looking for, and even some things you weren’t! You’ll save time and money by not driving to out-of-town malls, and your local option sales tax dollars will benefit our community, instead of the other cities where you might be shopping.

Using your Look Local ~ Shop Local cards is easy. It costs you nothing to use and gives you the change to win $50 in River City Gold at the end of the month. Give your card to the clerk and ask to have it punched. If you fill it up, ask for a blank right then and there. Clerks, if a customer doesn’t ask you to punch their card, ask them. And if they don’t have one, give them one and encourage them to use it at any of the 80 participating businesses.

Our upcoming 2019 Community Expo: River Cities – What We’re Made Of! will be held Tuesday, November 12th at the Moose Lodge in Clinton from 5-8 pm. We currently have 49 vendors signed up who are anxious to show you just what we’re made of here in the River Cities. Be sure to set aside a couple of hours and bring your family to the Moose Lodge at 1936 Lincolnway for the 2019 Community Expo: River Cities – What We’re Made Of!

And don’t forget to Look Local ~ Shop Local during the holiday season and all year long!

Maureen

Clinton’s Holiday Festival: Symphony of LightsVisitors to the festival will enjoy the viewing of over 40 lighted displays, 500,000+ supporting lights, castles, streams and a gingerbread lodge, that fill a 1.1 mile loop of Eagle Point Park. Located off of highway 67 North, its beauty and splendor will take you back to those holiday memories of your childhood.

The Symphony of Lights was brought to Clinton, Iowa in November 1996 by two non-profit organizations, Clinton Jaycee Foundation and Clinton Symphony Orchestra. These organizations founded the event as a fundraiser, but quickly learned it was much more. The Symphony of Lights brought a sense of pride to the community that had been lacking for a long time. It awakened volunteerism in all ages. Since its inception the number of volunteers has grown tremendously. It is estimated that the numbers involved reaches around 400.

During its 6th year, the Clinton Jaycee Foundation became the sole organizer of the Symphony of Lights. This change occurred due to a reorganization and a change in focus of the Clinton Symphony Orchestra. All proceeds go to enhance and continue the Symphony of Lights, fund the programs of the Clinton Jaycee Foundation, and make improvements and upgrades within Eagle Point Park.

Ascentra Credit Union Foundation Contributes $100,000 to Junior Achievement

In celebration of Junior Achievement’s 100-year anniversary and the opening of Ascentra Credit Union’s new home office in downtown Bettendorf, Iowa, the Ascentra Credit Union Foundation has contributed a $100,000 grant to Junior Achievement of the Heartland to help youth better understand financial concepts and gain confidence in the ability to manage their financial future. The grant will be distributed over a five-year period with support continuing through 2023-2024.

“The mission of Junior Achievement is directly aligned with Ascentra and the credit union’s philosophy,” said Dale Owen, President and CEO of Ascentra Credit Union. “Just as we have invested in our organization, we are continuing to invest in the young people of our region and their future.”

Junior Achievement of the Heartland offers financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship programs to students in grades K-12 helping them learn important skills like creating a budget, becoming work ready and developing a business plan. The majority of these core-mission programs are offered to schools at no cost.

The foundation’s contribution will ensure continued support in helping students gain the knowledge and skills they need to make smart academic and economic choices.

“We are grateful for the significant partnership the Ascentra Credit Union Foundation is providing to benefit more students with JA’s proven programs,” said Dougal Nelson, President and CEO, JA of the Heartland. “It is vital, we as a community, help our youth better understand financial concepts and gain confidence in their ability to manage their financial future. The foundation’s partnership demonstrates their dedication to our community in helping prepare our youth for their economic success.”

In addition, Ascentra’s employees will continue to serve as JA classroom volunteers and participate in other special events, such as the JA Bowl-A-Thon and the JA Titan Competition.

CCC Sharar Foundation receives donation from Iowa American Legion Foundation

The Clinton Community College Paul B. Sharar Foundation has accepted a donation from the Iowa American Legion Foundation. The gift will fund scholarships for Veterans attending the college including tuition, fees and textbooks.

The American Legion of Iowa Foundation was organized as a mechanism for the Legion to provide financial assistance to promote Americanism, youth programs, veterans rehabilitation and community service in the state of Iowa. Their service is an unseen battle against poverty, degenerative youth complacency and lack of patriotism. The Iowa American Legion betters human life through scholarships, help to veterans, and other humanitarian causes through their awards to organizations such as the CCC Paul B. Sharar Foundation.

CCC President Dr. Karen Vickers commented, “The support from the American Legion touches the lives of our military students in very meaningful ways. That support is important to them being able to continue their education at CCC. We are most appreciative of the work of the Iowa American Legion Foundation and their support for our students.”

CCC was founded in 1946, with the first class of 86 students graduating in 1948. Many of the first graduates were veterans who had served in World War II. The Paul B. Sharar Foundation is named in honor of the first dean of Clinton Community College who had a vision of

education as the way people learn to live more useful lives for themselves and for their fellow citizens so they feel the joy of accomplishment above and beyond the common-place that might have been. Since 1984, nearly $3.5 million in Sharar Foundation scholarships has been awarded to 3,710 CCC students. These scholarships are funded with contributions from businesses, organizations and individuals. Scholarship guidelines are determined by the donor with an emphasis in an area of interest including financial need, academic achievement, program of study, geographic region, academic promise or no specific guidelines.

Tallgrass Business Resources, an office furniture and supplies company based in Coralville, IA, and Best Office Supplies & Systems (BOSS) based in Clinton, IA, are pleased to announce the integration of their two companies effective November 1st, 2019. The combined entity will operate under the Tallgrass Business Resources trade name and operate six locations in Eastern Iowa; Cedar Rapids, Coralville, Davenport, Eldridge, Monticello and Clinton.

Former BOSS owner Brad Seibel will continue to manage the Clinton and Monticello locations, and is looking forward to continuing to serve his loyal customers. “It’s important to me that my business, my customers and my employees have a secure and solid partner for the future,” Brad said. “Our affiliation with Tallgrass will give us more purchasing power, allow us to offer additional product lines and provide our employees with greater benefits.”

The combined entities will have 48 employees and deliver daily to sixteen counties in eastern Iowa and western Illinois. Doug Parsons, President and CEO of Tallgrass commented, “It’s great to be able to partner with another well-respected independent dealer, especially one in a contiguous geographic area.”

In addition to traditional office furniture and supplies, Tallgrass offers janitorial supplies, promotional products and breakroom supplies. As a Steelcase office furniture dealer, Tallgrass also provides interior design services and installation/reconfiguration services.
