As I write this, it seems as though Spring may finally come to Clinton! Mother Nature can be a fickle lady, but with any luck she’s finished toying with us. The sunshine revives the weary winter spirit and brings positive attitudes that help get things done.

We received great news from the state that brought sunshine to the dreary early spring. Chamber member Bob Simpson, president of Big River Packaging Company, was honored as

Iowa’s 2018 SBA Small Business Person of the Year. Iowa SBA Director Jayne Armstrong met Simpson late last year when she presented the company a different award. She was impressed with Simpson’s business philosophy, namely, that the success of the company is attributable to the employees. As one of 52 winners from around the United States, Simpson will be honored for his accomplishment in Iowa, and has a chance of being named 2018 National Small Busi-ness Person of the Year in Washington, DC.

We are proud of Bob and Big River Packaging, and will be rooting for him to win the award at the national level. Congratulations Bob and the Big River Packaging family!

Perhaps by the time you read this the Iowa legislature will have adjourned. For now, however, we are waiting for the end of the session and hoping that the hotel-motel tax amendment will pass the Senate and become law. There has been a great deal of effort put forth by many people from the City, the Chamber and the CVB to make this happen and we are cautiously optimistic that this could be the year.

The start of spring brings with it activities all around. May will blow by with Mother’s Day and graduation celebrations. The Chamber’s next Biz After 5 will be May 10th at Zirkelbach Home Appliance on 5th Ave. S. The Chamber’s 146th Annual Meeting follows, on June 8th at the Moose Lodge. Mark the date for the meeting, awards presentation, and a casino night.

On the evening of June 15th, a representative from Gateway Travel and CIE Tours will be here to talk about the upcoming Chamber trip to Ireland in September. It promises to be a wonderful tour, so think about getting together with a group of travel buddies and joining the fun on this 8-day, 7-night, inclusive tour of the northern part of the Emerald Isle.

July 27th is the date for the Chamber’s Annual Golf PlayDay, and August will be busy with “last of the summer” activities. In the meantime, Finally Fridays, Music on the Avenue and Market Music will be filling the summer nights with a variety of musical genres for the community’s enjoyment.

Don’t forget to get your tickets and make your reservations for the Showboat Theatre’s terrific line-up of shows. The box office opens May 22nd and Jesus Christ Superstar will be the open-ing show on June 5th. Check the lineup at www.clintonshowboat.org and “don’t miss the boat”!

Please keep us informed of your events and activities. We love to share our members’ informa-tion on our Facebook page and in our weekly emails. There’s a lot to do and we want to make sure people know what’s happening!

As always, as you enjoy all our community has to offer, remember to be a good ambassador for the city you call home.

Don’t forget to always Celebrate Clinton!

Ascentra Credit Union Paws it Forward

In the middle of winter, local news broke about a horrific scene of ne-glected and abused pit bulls in Clinton, Iowa that captivated the attention of many throughout the region. The Clinton Humane Society took in the eight dogs right away and have been nursing them back to health, but the non-profit organization needed help as well.

“When something like this happens, it puts a big strain on us financially with vet bills and things like that, we need even more help and more sup-port,” said Jennifer Gerdes, Operations Manager of the Clinton Humane Society. “It can be overwhelming. We’re a 501c3 so we’re non-profit. We rely very greatly on our donations and sponsorships.”

Like many who were moved in the community, Ascentra Credit Union staff felt it was important to do their part, especially during a time of need. As part of a bigger project for International Pay it Forward Day, a group from Ascentra went to the Clinton Humane Society to show the dogs some love, and also brought with them a check for $500 to help offset the mounting costs for the organization.

“While it may not cover all of the mounting costs, we know any little bit helps,” said Jennifer Naeve, Chief Marketing Officer at Ascentra. “This is just one of many ways we are celebrating Pay it Forward Day and on April 28, the whole region will see how these random acts of kindness can have a lasting impact on our communities.”

From Clinton to the Quad Cities and down to Muscatine, Ascentra has been busy surprising shoppers, teachers, students, and organizations by paying for their groceries, coffee, and much more. Inspiration for these kind gestures was from the popular music video “God’s Plan” from Gram-my award-winning artist Drake, in which he gives away all of the money that was budgeted for his video.

These special moments were captured into a lively video that will be released on International Pay it Forward Day, April 28, and will be posted on Ascentra’s social media platforms including YouTube, Facebook and In-stagram. Leading up to April 28, Ascentra has been releasing short, sneak peek videos and behind-the-scenes footage on their social media.

Just as the people at Ascentra were inspired, they hope it sparks a move-ment in the community and encourages everyone to share with them how they are paying it forward by using the hashtags #Ascentra and #PayItFor-ward.

Beginning Saturday, April 21, 2018, Gilda’s Club is offering an online program to help people diagnosed with cancer, including those undergoing treatment, to manage the stress of diagnosis and treatment. to better manage cancer-related stress. Specifically, the young adult version of the program will include topics on autonomy, relationships, communication, finances and healthy behaviors.

Sessions will be held online using GoToMeeting. • Saturday sessions will begin on April 21 and be held from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m.• Monday sessions will begin on April 30 and be held from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.

This program is made possible by the Iowa Cancer Consortium and the Iowa Department of Public Health. The Iowa Cancer Consortium is a part-nership of health care providers, public health professionals, caregivers, researchers, cancer survivors, volunteers, and many other Iowans who work together to reduce the burden of cancer in Iowa.

“I highly recommend the program for anyone going through cancer,” said a past participant. “The series provides helpful information no matter what stage of your cancer treatment you are in.”

Every year in the U.S., more than 70,000 adolescents and young adults between the ages of 15-39 are diagnosed with cancer, which represents about 6 percent of all new cancer diagnoses. Psychosocial and support services available to adolescents and young adults with cancer are limited, although the needs are great due to the many emotional, developmental and transitional changes that occur during this stage in life.

To learn more about this program or to register to participate, contact Kelly Hendershot, 563-326-7504, [email protected].

Timber Lake Playhouse Announces May Shows and Events

Timber Lake Playhouse (TLP), the premier professional summer theatre of northwest Illinois, is busily preparing for the May 8 opening of the season.

TLP’s Magic Owl Children’s Theatre production of Junie B. Jones, The Musical is based on the book series by Barbara Park. It’s Junie B.’s first day of first grade, and a lot of things have changed for her: Junie’s friend, Lucille, doesn’t want to be her best pal anymore and, on the bus, Junie B. makes friends with Herb, the new kid at school. Also, Junie has trouble reading the blackboard and her teacher, Mr. Scary, thinks she may need glasses. Throw in a friendly cafeteria lady, a kickball tournament and a “Top-Secret Personal Beeswax Journal,” and first grade has never been more exciting. Junie B. Jones runs May 8 – 11, 10:00 & 1:00 and May 12 at 10:00. All Tickets are $6.

Fulton Plant Sale

Finally looking forward to spring weather, we are all somewhat anxious to get outside into the yard to do some gardening. As you anticipate what changes and improvement you wish to make, consider coming to the annual Fulton Plant Sale on Saturday, May 12. There is always a nice selection of plants to choose from for your seasonal projects. Primarily perennials with some annuals will be available.

This sale operates solely on donated specimens from area gardens. If you have plants you no longer want or need to split, dig them up and bring them to the Fulton Fire Station (near the intersection of Rt 136 and Rt 84) on Friday, May 11 from 1:00-7:00pm. Gardeners will be there to re-pack-age your donations for the sale on the following day. The actual sale will start Saturday, May 12 at 8:00am – noon. Most plants are priced at $2 and up. Come early for the best selection.

Master Gardeners will be available to answer questions concerning plant-ing tips and recommended plant care. The Fulton Plant Sale is sponsored by the Friends of the Windmill with proceeds to benefit the beautification of the Windmill Area.

If you have questions as to digging and splitting plants, contact Jude at 563-249-6115.
