LifelinePublished by CirCle of Care’s Public Relations Department, this quarterly publication is designed to highlight CirCle of Care’s programs, to encourage inquiries about potential admissions and to challenge donors to continue their generous support of our mission to provide possibilities, potential and promise for Oklahoma’s children and youth.

In the Bible, Paul praises the Macedonians for their generosity in giving to those in need even as they struggled. He further states that they were graced by

God for their doing so. We read, “Moreover, brethren, we make known to you the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia: that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality. For I bear witness that according to their ability, yes, and beyond their ability, they were freely willing, imploring

us with much urgency that we would receive the gift and the fellowship of the ministering to the saints.” (2

Corinthians 8:1-4) I feel that we at the Circle of Care are also blessed by

our churches and our loyal and generous supporters for their “giving all they can give, in every way that they can give, for as long as they ever can give”. At our recent planning session for our upcoming Strategic Planning retreat, there was, as always, questions about finance and funding. Although,

the topic for this meeting was programming, we all realize that without adequate funding, our programs grind to a halt. I was pleased that as we discussed our many blessings, our Board members continued to urge staff to “dream big”, to continue to look to where we want and need to be, and to not be hindered by doubt in our planning. Knowing that we must always strive to be good stewards of our resources and always look to the most efficient and effective means to deliver service to our children, youth and families, let us also acknowledge our blessings.

Each year, the Circle of Care is the ministry of the conference with the highest percentage of apportionment giving from our churches. Our churches even when faced with financial constraints seem to give “…according to their ability, and, yes, beyond their ability…” We always receive special gifts from so many of our churches who have already met their allotted apportionments. We ask a special blessing for these churches.

Just over three years ago, our Board launched a special project called “Project 1000”. In this we asked our supporters to pledge $ 1,000 for a three year commitment. To date we have pledges from over 143 of our supporters who help us walk this path. Indeed, after just the beginning of the third year, we have had over 24 who have completed their first three year commitment. We hope that most of these generous and giving souls continue as members of this group. We acknowledge these pledges with a symbolic lapel pin boldly imprinted with “1000” and are now delivering to those who have completed their pledge early, a desktop honorarium with their name and our logo, acknowledging their gracious support.

Many of our supporters cannot make this level of pledge, but so many continue to give according to, or even beyond their ability because they are called to do so. We all must give as we are able and in the manner that we are able. The children, youth and families of the Circle of Care thank all those who step forward to express God’s Grace on so many of His children.

As we go forward into our next period of planning and service, and as we strive to serve more children and youth, we give thanks. We thank the Board for its leadership, the churches and our contributors for their gracious gifts, and we thank God of the opportunity to serve His plan and the “gift and the fellowship of the ministering”.

May the Grace of God be with you always.

Circle of Care has received the GuideStar Exchange Seal, a leading sym-bol of transparency and accountability provided by GuideStar uSA, Inc., the premier source of nonprofit information. The Seal demonstrates our deep commitment to nonprofit transparency and accountability.

The GuideStar recognition was the result of Circle of Care’s listing of pro-grammatic and financial informa-tion at guidestar.org, which is a searchable

website designed to showcase nonprofit organizations to potential donors. In a related project, Circle of Care has joined GiveSmartOKC, an online partnership between GuideStar and the Oklahoma City Community Foundation. Circle of Care is one of the first nonprofits to be listed on the GiveSmartOKC website, which provides central Oklahoma donors an easy-to-use listing of quality nonprofit organizations. living at home with my parents was… hard. Very hard. I had no Jesus but more im-portantly at my age, no one to talk to without beating me or telling me I was worthless, how I was wrong. And I know now that I was a little monster. I didn’t listen. I stole. I lied. I broke trust and faith chains that I had. I was the outcast. The person who got pat-ted down after to school to see if I’d stolen something. The person banned from setting foot in the kitchen. The reason my parents locked their bedroom door. But I needed help and counseling seemed like a half-hearted effort. With a divorce knocking at my family’s door, my parents decided instead to send me away. And I’m glad; I didn’t want my father divorced again. I was hesitant at first because, well because it was new. But as I remembered those random room tossing; the phone calls to my dad when I acted up (everyday); the fights; the thrashings; the mistrust; the verbal, emo-tional, physical abuse; the stress level; the fear; my thoughts of running away; the hearts I broke and my two suicide attempts, I found the joy swelling inside me. Free. Free! Free of these chains I gave myself. A second… err, fourth chance to be hon-est. But lord knows I needed it. And we all needed a break from each other. August 8, 2008 is the day I moved into the ranch. The weather was cloudy. I bunked with my two roommates who were on home pass at the time. We had chicken for dinner. That’s the day I can’t forget. With some new rules to adapt to, along with a new family and sched-ule too, it was very different. And a regular dose of church was my favorite change. God gave my parents that flyer, so who am I not to go? After all those years of bitter looks and a tone filled with distrust from my mother, father and sisters; it never fails to amaze me how happy they look, sound and act when they talk to me now. So I know I wasn’t the only one blessed by the united Methodist Boy’s ranch. This program is, was and will be everything to me. It has supported me so I’ll support it. never before has one group of strangers made such an impact on me. I am tremen-dously grateful. And a little happy I’m not in jail, because that’s where I was headed. So thank you. Thank you to uMBr and to Jesus!

Circle of Care Receives GuideStar Recognition

Former Board memberPasses Away Clydella Hentschel, former Circle of Care Board Member, died in June. A longtime community volunteer in Tulsa, she worked with the Children’s Medical Center and Saint Francis Hospital. At Saint Francis, she worked the surgical waiting room early morning for 14 years and was Chair of the Candy Stripers and President of the Auxiliary. At CMC, she served as President and then Chair of the Board of Trustees and was very much involved in the transition when Hillcrest purchased CMC. After that, she was on the Board of Hillcrest Medical Foundation, Hillcrest Health Care System and the Peggy V. Helmerich Wom-en’s Health Care Center. For some 35 years, she has been a part of a very special group of ladies that have run, through the Auxil-iary of CMC, a thrift shop, now across from Hillcrest, which distributes everything they receive to children’s charities. She was a member of First united Meth-odist Church in Tulsa, and is survived by her husband of 53 years, dave; Her son Scott, Erin, Emily and lindsey Hentschel and her son Stuart, Cathy, Annie and Ella Hentschel, both families from Austin, TX.

For those of you who use the internet to search for information on a regular basis, consider using GoodSearch as your primary or secondary search engine. For every successful search that you make with GoodSearch, you earn Circle of Care a penny. In order for Circle of Care to receive the monies, you must designate us as the primary recipient. Go to the GoodSearch website, it will ask who you are searching for, type in these words: Oklahoma united Methodist Circle of Care -- then it will ask you to verify your recipient. From then on every time that you make a successful search, you will earn Circle of Care a penny. Please note that if you do one search, then are going to do a second search on something else, you must go back to the GoodSearch page where you placed your original search in order to get that second, third, fourth, etc, penny. Another way to help Circle of Care earn a percentage of your on-line shopping is to use GoodShop, it is the tab directly to the right of GoodSearch. A list of the different businesses are available by clicking on the GoodShop tab and what percentage they will give to Circle of Care. Again, you will need to designate Oklahoma united Methodist Circle of Care as the recipient of your GoodShop. At our third annual Legacy ceremony, Circle of Care Vice Chairman David Beal gave an inspirational keynote address and urged these young people onward and upward. Here at Circle of Care, we are profoundly grateful for your sup-port, and for all the many contributions that come to us through the u.S. Mail. But there is one change we would like to be sure you are aware of. The contribution envelope pictured above is an old one that we don’t use anymore. In fact, we haven’t printed any of these in about three years. We found that using the postage-paid envelopes cost us more than the regular postage rate would have.

Our current contribution envelopes look similar, but a postage stamp is required. We hope you don’t mind using a stamp, and helping us to ensure that even more of your contributed dollars flow directly into our programs. We know some of you may have saved the old envelopes to use later, and we would be happy to send you a supply of the new enve-lopes if that would be helpful. Thanks for understanding!

A Letter From the Board Chair

OKlAHOMA unITEd METHOdIST Circle of Care for CHIldrEn and yOuTH


making Progress, Looking AheadWith each year passed, we tend to look back at the year past in re-gret at the goals not quite accomplished, and too often look forward with some anxiety that something unknown, and therefore feared, might block our progress. I really prefer the saying, “let us not look back in anger or forward in fear, but around in awareness.” I would ask that we look back at 2011 with thanks for the opportunity to serve, that we celebrate our accomplishments and those of our chil-dren, and that we look forward to the coming year with anticipation of further serving His cause in serving His children.

In 2011, we made significant progress in all areas of our ministry.

Here are some highlights:

Project 1000 donors grew to 128 in 2011, with 20 donors completing their initial three year pledges the first quarter of 2012.

In residential, we:

*Maintained 91% utilization residentially, serving 37 children at the uMCH & uMBr.

*Maintained 99% utilization on campus in out Independent living Program serving 58 youth, with an additional 56 youth served in the community.

*Continued to grow in youth graduating High school, college or vocational school.

*Our youth completed 3, 382 hour of community service

*Continue to move towards Campus Christian Homes model to bet-ter serve children and youth on our campuses.

At Pearl’s Hope, we:

*Served 14 women with 29 children in 2011.

*62% completed and left the program successfully.

*Finalized renovation plan for lyon’s Cottage and conducted a en-ergy assessment for the entire campus, and

*Are completing a plan to secure foundation support for complete campus renovation, anchored by an initial pledge of $ 100,000 from the united Methodist Foundation.

In Child SHArE, we:

*Served 555 children, averaging 293 children per day in our homes.

*Completed 64 adoptions into “Forever Homes” in 2011, bringing our total to 296 since inception of the program.

*now serving through cooperative ministries in lawton, Ponca City, Enid, Elk City, and Grove; the numbers served in the last four areas are not included in the previous figures.

*Holsinger Home continues to serve a full house of six children throughout 2011.

*Our Emergency Foster Home program served 50 children five or under this year, and we have been given approval to expand into the Tulsa area.

*Foster/Adoptive Home Study program continues to grow in dis-trict Two

As we read the papers and watch news reports about the trials and tribulations of children in our state’s child welfare system, please know that your Circle of Care is leading the way in caring for children and youth, that your Circle of Care is partnering with public and private partnerships to improve the daily lives of all our children, and that your Circle of Care looks forward to meeting the

challenges of serving children in a safer, Christ-like environment in the coming years. As we approach our centennial in 2017, let us remember that we are told in Philippians 3:13-14 KJV, “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” - don Batson, President/CEO

the way that the united methodist Boys Ranch has changed me is that it has taught me so many life

skills. I didn’t even know how to start a dishwasher before I came to umBR. But not only has the ranch

taught me life skills, it has also taught me how to be a better son to both my physical and heavenly father
