It is a skill that we will use all of our days. Reading transports us to time long ago and it encourages us to dream of things in the future. Reading instructs us and educates us. It inspires us. Sometimes it makes us laugh and sometimes it brings tears. I love to read. I get that honestly. When I was little my mother spent a lot of time reading to us. Our favorite books were a series called Little Golden Books, and we wore them out. We knew them so well that we always knew when Mom tried to skip words. One of the pictures that is permanently embedded in my memory is our daughter, when she was little, sitting in the crook of a tree in our front yard reading. At that time she read everything out loud so it was a joy just to stand and watch her and observe the expressions on her face as she read her book. Interestingly enough it was that picture that came flooding into my mind as I thought about the past while I was waiting to walk her down the aisle at her wedding. It still tugs at my heart as I write about it. It is hard for me to imagine what it would be like to be someone who has not been taught to read. I have a great ap- preciation for Bible translation ministries. Many of the people groups in our world are made up of people who not only cannot read, but their language has no written form. Translators first have to learn the language and then cre- ate an alphabet and then teach the people how to read what they have never seen before. All of that is necessary before the Bible can be translated into their language. If you would like to see a reaction of a tribe in Kenya receiv- ing Bibles in their own language, click on this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFc5AB_UbFU The very fact that we have the Bible is testimony to the importance of the written word. The written word provides a more permanent record of what God says. A short time before Babylon would capture the nation of Judah and place them in captivity for 70 years, God instructed the prophet Jeremiah to take a scroll and write on it all the words which I have spoken to you concerning Israel and Judah…” (Jeremiah 36:2) Jeremiah dictated all that God had spoken to him to his secretary Baruch and then told Baruch to read those words to the people. Years later after the Jews returned to Jerusalem from their captivity in Babylon, the priest Ezra gathered the people together and Nehemiah 8:8 says that They read from the book, from the law of God…” It was an emotional expe- rience. Nehemiah says that “...all the people were weeping when they heard the words of the law(Nehemiah 8:9). This led to a revival and reinstating the observance of the Feast of Booths.Someone searched the Bible and found that Jesus said the words it is writtenabout 30 times. In the Apostle Pauls first letter to Timothy he told his young protégé, Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scrip- ture…” (I Timothy 4:13) and Paul told the Colossian church to have his letter to them read in the church at Laodi- cea and Pauls letter from Laodicea was in turn to be read to the church in Colossae (Colossians 4:16). The book of Revelation opens with the words, Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and heed the things which are written in it; for the time is near(Revelation 1:3). There are all kinds of things one might read and I think it is good to read a variety of kinds of literature, but we dare not neglect the reading of the Bible. It is indeed a light to our path(Psalm 119:105). Matt Malott

One of the greatest gifts we receive in life is the ability to read.

Our favorite books were a series called “Little Golden Books,” and we wore them out.

I have a great ap-preciation for Bible translation ministries. Many of the people groups in our world are made up of people who not only cannot read, but their language has no written form. Translators first have to learn the language and then cre-ate an alphabet and then teach the people how to read what they have never seen before. All of that is necessary before the Bible can be translated into their language. The very fact that we have the Bible is testimony to the importance of the written word. The written word provides a more permanent record of what God says. A short time before Babylon would capture the nation of Judah and place them in captivity for 70 years, God instructed the prophet Jeremiah to take a scroll and “write on it all the words which I have spoken to you concerning Israel and Judah…” (Jeremiah 36:2) Jeremiah dictated all that God had spoken to him to his secretary Baruch and then told Baruch to read those words to the people.

Years later after the Jews returned to Jerusalem from their captivity in Babylon, the priest Ezra gathered the people together and Nehemiah 8:8 says that “They read from the book, from the law of God…” It was an emotional expe-rience. Nehemiah says that “...all the people were weeping when they heard the words of the law” (Nehemiah 8:9). This led to a revival and reinstating the observance of the “Feast of Booths.”

Someone searched the Bible and found that Jesus said the words “it is written” about 30 times. In the Apostle Paul’s first letter to Timothy he told his young protégé, “Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scrip-ture…” (I Timothy 4:13) and Paul told the Colossian church to have his letter to them read in the church at Laodi-cea and Paul’s letter from Laodicea was in turn to be read to the church in Colossae (Colossians 4:16). The book of Revelation opens with the words, “Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and heed the things which are written in it; for the time is near” (Revelation 1:3).

There are all kinds of things one might read and I think it is good to read a variety of kinds of literature, but we dare not neglect the reading of the Bible. It is indeed a “light to our path” (Psalm 119:105).

Fall Choir Packets and Rehearsal CDs are available for pickup in the Green Room. Our online re-hearsals will resume August 26th, and we’d love to have some new singers. It’s such a joy to sing to-gether! You don’t need to be able to read music – the only re-

quirement is the ability to carry a tune. If you’re interested email me at [email protected].
