When I started Life.Paper.Scrapbook. the idea in my head was to share Australian scrapbooking and designers with the world but that isn’t what happened, quite the opposite in fact. The world decided to come to me and this issue really is testament to that with contributing designers from not only Australia, USA and Canada but also Brazil, Israel, Singapore, Japan, Russia, Sweden, Norway, Greece, Germany and Spain just to name a few. My tiny little magazine has become a sort of United Nations of Scrapbooking and I couldn’t be happier.

I am not a journalist, I have no background in media, I am just a girl who likes to scrapbook and wants to share my love of it with like minded people so I was delighted at the response to the first issue and all your positive comments, I cannot thank you enough for the support I have received.

This issue is a little light on written articles and I do apologise for that, but this is a learning curve for me so I am trying to find the right balance of content. That said the most important part of the magazine for me is the inspiration that you can get from the layouts. I do hope you enjoy this issue and please make sure you visit our website to join in our two monthly challenges (a colour and sketch challenge), meet featured designers from around the world and to find out how to submit work for the next issue.

This is the second time I have met Amy and when she sees me, she welcomes me like I am a long lost friend. To be honest I am not sure if she remembers me from the time we met at a make and take a year ago, from my online picture or if she is just one of those people who are genuinely likes meeting people but it really doesn’t matter because she is so welcoming and friendly you feel like you only saw her yesterday or that she is one of your closest friends.

Amy’s original love was fashion, a passion she had followed since a young age when she would “wallpaper her bedroom walls with the colorful and glamorous pages of fashion magazines” but a spur of the moment visit to a LSS changed all of that. “I walked into a scrapbooking store 2007 and they were giving a workshop the next day so my cousin and I signed up for it” The class was taught by Australian designer Emily Falconbridge who was teaching a workshop on making a mini album out of a deck of cards. “We had a lot of fun and I completely fell in love with her, all the products and just the idea of scrapbooking in general. So then my love affair turned from fashion to paper and it switched pretty quickly.”

Amy Tangerine may be the busiest woman in scrapbooking. Between designing her own lines, working on design teams for Studio Calico and Two Peas In A Bucket and jet setting around the world to offer classes and inspiration it is a wonder she has time to stop and relax, but if it stresses her out she doesn’t show it at all.


This July she will be releasing her 5th line in collaboration with American Crafts at Winter CHA in Las Vegas so I try to get her to spill the beans but she keeps her cards close to her chest “With my first collection, because American Crafts didn’t know if I would have additional ones, they said please give us all your good ideas, so I had everything from a coat hanger, camera, feathers, a typewriter and a plane, so I’ve kind of used up all my good ideas...just kidding. I have a staple in my line every time, which is a camera, and I don’t think that will go out of style.”

There’s no doubt she is well loved in the industry and whenever she comes to Australia we give her a bit of a rockstar welcome because we don’t get a lot of scrapbook “celebrities” down here and, well because she’s awesome. She is always happy to answer any questions about her line, tips, techniques or just life in general and willing to sign daybooks, layouts, cards and have her picture taken with people for their Project Life album. I can’t help but ask her what she thinks of her fame. “It’s funny because when I first started scrapbooking, you get friends involved and your friends introduce you to techniques, brands and people in the industry that you look up to. I was very fortunate to meet Heidi Swapp, Teresa Collins and pretty much right away I felt an immediate connection to them and then later on I met Becky Higgins. I just think it is so awesome that people are viewed as celebrities in this industry but really I don’t feel any different. I am so glad that people can look up to me or look to me to inspire them.”

Amy’s must have craft supply? I always carry adhesive with me, it sounds like such a silly thing but it’s like one of those tools I can not live without, because I will find myself on an aeroplane wanting to cut something out of a magazine or tear something out and stick it somewhere.


The subject of Project Life comes up and I ask her if she thinks it is making scrapbooking more popular and accessible to people. “Absolutely, I feel like it takes the pressure off a little bit and I think the main thing is to just document your memories and if it is another way of doing it I think it’s excellent. I think most people should just focus on sitting down, having some creative time and getting their memories documented. Don’t worry what everyone else is doing or how they are doing it. If you can’t get to it weekly there is no pressure, you know I think that’s the main thing to keep in mind.”At this point I have to admit that I have only done three weeks or so this year and what is her advice for me and other people in the same boat. “That’s OK, thats alright. I don’t feel the pressure to go back, last year I only did it for six months but I don’t feel any desire to go back and do the second half of the year. I just feel like you can pick up where you leave off and no one is going to care years from now if you used a certain embellishments or whether the photo was from that exact week or a different week, it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things.”

Sadly our time to chat comes to an end too soon, but before she goes I ask about her next big project - a baby due on September 15. “Everybody is excited, the first grandchild on both sides so I imagine he will be a little spoilt... he’s a little spoilt already.” And you just know she will be a great mum.

Amy on travel...I think it’s a great way to feel inspired and see the world, really just because I enjoy doing it, I feel an obligation to do it and also to share it with other people whether it’s blogging or instagram or any device I can share it on I’m happy to do that because not everyone can do it.

Each week’s lesson will include thoughts on several topics pertaining to the theme of the week, a coordinating worksheet, and several creative prompts.There will be inspiration from contributing team members in each week’s pdf as well more inspiration as in a follow up blog post each Wednesday. This is a free class, so it will not cost you anything to participate.

This June, July and August Kristin Tweedale of RuKristin Papercrafts is offering a free eight week storytelling workshop on her blog.

There is no formal sign-up for the workshop. Lessons will be available on the blog for anyone to download until August 31st. Lessons will also be made available in the Find Your Voice facebook group and via email each week to those who opt-in.

One of the benefits of a die cut machine is that you can custom cut titles like the quote Margrethe has used here. Placing different pattern papers underneath gives the title work a unique twist and is also a great way to use up scraps. Rather than using cardstock of a patterned paper as a background Kimberly has used an extra large photo and the result is stunning. She has used vellum to cover the darker side of the photo and draw the focus back to the important part of the photo. “This my daughter and our dog from about 10 years ago. He passed a way a year ago but he was a very beloved pet and I wanted to capture that. I chose the colors and crumpled the vellum to give it more a vintage/warn look, to make it more cozy and loved.”

Paper straws have been popping up in kits and paper stores online and they can be a tricky item to use but Margareta has some great tips. “I used it as a bar on the page, hanging heart shapes in baker’s twine.
