Visitors will be in for a real treat as construction of model homes is underway at Lyon’s Creek where Rosehaven is offering a spectacular collection of stunning new homes in

Chippawa’s finest location. With the excitement of Marineland and Niagara Falls so close,

Lyon’s Creek’s setting in the secluded south side of the Welland River is by far the more sought-after residential area with the neighbourhood’s major amenities being situated there, including shopping, schools, sports facilities, park – even a golf course.

Designs being offered at Lyon’s Creek are proving to be real showstoppers. A particular favourite is the exciting new collection of freehold 35 ft. WIDE townhome bungalow up to 2,728 sq. ft. with loft option - perfect for those who are ready to move out of their large family home but not ready to give up space or interesting design. With their surprisingly spacious floor layout, double car garage and long list of luxury features, these amazing low maintenance townhome designs offer that detached home feeling from the low $300’s.

Purchasers at Lyon’s Creek can also choose from a wide selection of 45’ & 50’ singles, semis and freehold towns with a new release of 50’ lots coming soon for some of the most popular designs.

Homes here are truly grand, with covered porches and balconies, coffered and vaulted ceilings, master bedroom suites with walk-in closet, gourmet kitchens with breakfast bar and island, soaring 9’ main floor ceilings, dramatic 8’ tall front entry doors, and elegant gas fireplaces. All homes in this high quality community are being built to Energy Star standards of energy efficiency.

Lyon’s Creek is surrounded by beautiful valley lands and dense forest in the picturesque historic town of Chippawa. Spend a languorous afternoon touring the scenic beauty of Ontario’s Wine Country, sampling the fruits of the region at one of the many wine festivals. Or stroll thorough the historic village of Chippawa with its unique shops, antique boutiques and restaurants that exude an authentic small-town atmosphere. Niagara’s world-class attractions and casinos are just a short drive away. Whether you feel like hiking or biking the trails, canoeing on the river, or taking in a round of golf, Lyon’s Creek is the perfect location for a vibrant and healthy lifestyle.

Four detached and two townhome Model Homes will be ready for viewing later in the spring. But as pre-construction pricing will end soon, interested purchasers are urged to visit ahead of the crowds. For the Presentation Centre at 4210 Lyon’s Creek Rd, take the QEW to Lyon’s Creek Rd, then east on Lyon’s Creek to Sodom Rd. and the Sales Office.

The NEXT GENERATION OF

We all know by now that kitchens are a worthwhile investment for any home renovation these days, and it seems

appliances are becoming the celebrities of any kitchen renovation. I adore appliances and am happy with the fact that through suppliers such as Appliance Canada, I can now have access to appliances that were normally not available in Canada. Clearly, we are becoming a powerful consumer base for the top appliance suppliers.

Not only are the new appliance options here to make our lives easier and more effi cient, but they also bring out the “inner chef” in all of us, which is not a bad thing. The proliferation of reality shows which depict “everyday people” fulfi lling their cooking dreams certainly has helped in motivating us into making our kitchens work for us, which in turn has made the suppliers willing to invest in providing products that step up the cooking experience.

Tips: ›› Though the cabinets are often the most fun to pick first, start by determining your

appliances first when planning your kitchen, this will help the designer plan the cabinetry and other storage details you will need.

›› Before you select appliances determine what you really require from your appliances, how often do you entertain or cook in your kitchen?

›› Make sure you give your appliance specifications to the electrician, the plumber and the heating and ventilation specialist, they need this information to provide you with the appropriate services to make these appliances perform as required.

›› Plan to give 10 to 12 weeks for your kitchen renovation, the order of operations is the key to making this process smooth and stress-free.

›› A stand-alone range and a convection/steam oven (instead of a microwave) is the most cost-effective way to add additional functionality in your kitchen.

›› Ensure you have adequate power outlets, especially do not forget the island as well as enough lighting for all of the activities that will be taking place in the kitchen

I don’t know about you, but I love to cook. I love the entire process and the fact that we can now have appliances that provide a Ferrari-like look and performance. Advanced technology has yielded many new options for home cooking. The range, the stove, the wall ovens, the “stoven” (my made-up name for a stove with an oven) are key to your cooking experience. Whether electric, gas or induction, we all have our preferences, I personally adore cooking with gas. I think the Thermador 48-in. Professional Series Pro Grand Commercial Steam Range is one of the best on the market. With a powerful 22,000 BTUs at your disposal and a convection and steam option, your cooking possibilities are limitless. This appliance will make the journey just as fun as the final destination.

The newest innovation is also the Speed Oven, which is a great addition to any kitchen. It delivers oven-quality results up to 10 times faster than conventional cooking techniques, and without pre-heating! The GE Monogram Built-in Oven with Advantium Speedcook Technology can cook, brown, warm and perform all the conveniences of a microwave.

Refrigeration is a luxury, which we often take for granted – a perk which our ancestors did not benefit from. With the growing awareness of the benefits of fresh food, our need for preserving our perishables has grown. I adore the cool drawer from Fisher

Paykel, which can be integrated into an island and house all your produce at arm’s reach – it’s great for juicing or salad tossing. Consider it for a small kitchen or if you don’t need a full-size fridge.

All these advances in appliance technology are a great benefit to homeowners. Adding any or all of these elements will inevitably raise the value of your home and they will also elevate the lifestyle and enjoyment of the kitchen experience.

In a region burgeoning with real estate development, it took a Barrie company – a successful and prominent one – to spot the gem at Blue Mountain. Georgian International has recently announced their plans

to develop Windfall at Blue Mountain, an inspired enclave of detached mountain homes next to Blue Mountain Village.

When complete, this 148-acre master-planned community will more authentically represent the concept of resort living than any other in or around Collingwood or Blue Mountain.

The distinctive architecture of the homes at Windfall represents an artful, modern and eco-considerate interpretation of Georgian Bay cabins, cottages and mountain chalets in timeless bungalow, bungalow-with-loft and two-storey designs. All detached three- and four-bedroom designs feature sprawling front porches to enjoy views of the mountain. Garages, rather than being the dominant visual feature, are detached and set at the end of the driveway to provide for wider floor plans with more natural light and to enhance front yard curb appeal.

Although within easy walking distance to the village and the mountain’s lift system, Windfall has a high level of seclusion and privacy. The homes have been imaginatively segmented into charming neighbourhoods while still dedicating one-third of the land to forested parks, trails, wetland preservation areas and other natural features. An architecturally striking but unpretentious barn-inspired structure, simply called ‘The Shed’, will be Windfall’s exclusive four-season gathering place.

A landscaped greenbelt, acting as a pedestrian thoroughfare, will run directly through the development linking Windfall to its enviable next

door neighbours – Blue Mountain Village to the west and the award-winning Scandinave Spa to the east. At Blue Mountain, a $10,000,000 expansion is underway that will bring the ski slopes literally to Windfall’s doorstep. Windfall owners will be able to walk to Blue’s new ‘Orchards’ hills and lifts.

Just over an hour from the GTA, the perennial favourite Blue Mountain-Collingwood area is the scene of so many happy memories that people thinking where to spend their “me and we” time flock here; be it for holidays, weekend retreats or laying down roots for retirement. Of course, the magnificent natural surroundings and the myriad of recreational activities offered such as skiing, swimming, hiking, biking, boating and golfing, could have something to do with it.

Windfall will be sold using a Priority Selection process so interested buyers should confirm their interest to guarantee their place on the list. Selection Day will be held this spring so visit www.windfallatblue.com to Register. For a limited time only, the first enclave of mountain-style homes will be offered from $399,900.

For more information, please call Blue Mountain’s Village Realty at 705-445-0440 or register at windfallatblue.com.

YANIC SIMARD is the principal designer of the Toronto Interior Design Group. Specializing in residential and commercial projects, Simard often applies his signature high/low and old/new combination design techniques in developing unique designs. Simard has created designs for clients in Toronto, Montreal and Miami, and has appeared as a regular guest expert on Citytv’s CityLine. For more information visit tidg.ca.

The old adage is true, good things do come in small packages! Case in point, designer Yanic Simard’s

impeccably decorated 640-sq.-ft. two-bedroom home in Toronto. While many people think bigger is better when it comes to owning real estate, Yanic saw the immediate potential in this cosy gem and set out to prove that he can live large in a small space.

“Choosing a house with a good frame is key when wanting to design a space that feels bigger than it actually is,” says Simard.

The quaint house he chose boasts large appeal with 10- and 11-ft. vaulted ceilings, eight-ft. doors and oversized baseboards, elements that helped kick-start his overall design inspiration. When it came to establishing the flow of the house, Yanic’s eclectic style shines throughout the space with mid-century design elements mixed with antique, Art Deco and ’70s influences. A sophisticated colour palette of black, white and grey accented with hues of mossy green, brown and baby blue, and unexpected hits of gold and chrome creates a truly interesting dynamic.

Of course, one of the biggest challenges when decorating and living in a smaller space is storage. Simard insists that storage throughout every room is essential to keeping a chic abode. So he came up with creative

solutions to maximize space in his small quarters. Solutions such as a polished chrome armoire in the den/guest room, that works as a stylish piece and can also accommodate a guest’s personal belongings.

Hidden storage under the sofa in the living room, closet organizers in the bedroom, and a stainless steel cart in the bathroom all provide extra storage and diminish the look of clutter.

Finally, to make his small space feel comfortable, luxurious and complete, Simard opted for a variety of interesting fabrics from linen and silk to velvet and chenille. These fabrics appear in different aspects around the home from curtains and pillows to furniture and rugs.

While decorating a small space may seem like a daunting task, Simard claims, “A good and well-planned furniture layout is key to a sophisticated environment.”

So if you have a petite pad, get planning and you too can live large in a small space!

Port Place makes a splash in Port Dalhousie with ambitious waterfront project

Port Place has made a splash in St. Catharines with its plans for this state-of-the-art, 17-storey condominium tower that will forever change the Port Dalhousie skyline.

Over the next two years, developers of Port Place will initiate a transformation of this popular summer locale on the Lake Ontario shore with an ambitious mixed-used waterfront development that will preserve key heritage elements while adding upscale condo suites, 36,000 square feet of ground level commercial space, a theatre and a boutique hotel.

At the heart of the development will be a public square surrounded by shops, outdoor patios and a mix of restaurants to energize the waterfront. In winter, the square will provide an outdoor skating rink. The ground level of the tower will be a collection of retail stores, restaurants, and services complementing the beach, boutique shops, cafes and activities that already exist, with a suite of professional offices on the second storey accessible by elevator. Also just released are 15 Harbour Lofts, which sit atop the commercial space and have

prime views. They’ll be joined to the tower by a glass bridge.Port Place will introduce residential units to the

waterfront, while the theatre, hotel and commercial space will draw patrons to boost the local economy. The project will be an asset for the community, says Brian Tilley, vice-president of sales and marketing for The Augustine Group. “It really will become a year-round destination.”

Another component of the Port Place development – a 103-room boutique hotel – is on the brink of being sold to a major name in the hotel and hospitality industry. The hotel will also run the project’s 400-seat world-class theatre. The hotel will incorporate the preserved facade of the Austin Hotel, a tiny 1845 stone jail that is one of the oldest in Canada, and the Lakeside Hotel, officially designated as a heritage building.

Sales are at 30 per cent for the 80 condo units in the tower, with prices ranging from $297,990 for a 565-square-foot suite to $3 million for a 3,000- square-foot penthouse. Average suite size will be 1,100 square feet with average prices of about

a d v e r to r i a l16 LifestyLe Communities | spring 2013

$500,000. With the retail space sold, reduced pricing is being offered for a limited time on 20 suites to secure the final stage of financing. Only a few remaining sales are needed and then construction can begin with a completion date just in time for the 2015 Pan Am games and the rowing competitions that will take place on the neighbouring Henley course.

“It’s waterfront pricing and there’s not much waterfront available in the Golden Horseshoe,” points out Brian Tilley, vice president of sales and marketing. “You’d pay twice the price for the Toronto waterfront.”

With experience in the construction industry totaling more than 50 years, the diverse team behind this project includes Derek Martin with 20+ years’ experience in heavy civil construction and other major projects, including the bobsled track for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Whistler, B.C.; Harvard-trained architect Michael Kirkland of Toronto’s Kirkland Partnership to design the tower, which offers expanses of glass and large balconies; and Toronto designer Alex Chapman of Union31 to design the suites and common areas as well as the onsite model suite, a showpiece of the level of luxury living that awaits.

Toronto is just an hour away by car—or 30 minutes by boat — and

the Buffalo international airport is a 30-minute drive. Being in the heart of Niagara, wine country is also minutes away, and golf courses are found in every direction.

Whether you’ve lived in Port Dalhousie for much of your life… or whether you’ve always wanted to live in waterfront location, Port Place offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enjoy a carefree condominium lifestyle like no other.

Baldwin Place Where variety is the spice of life

It is often said that variety is the spice of life – an idea which is vividly expressed at Baldwin Place, Tillsonburg Developments’ premier adult lifestyle community in

Tillsonburg. Here, you’ll find the perfect combination of value, quality and a range of great options to choose from, allowing homebuyers to personalize homes.

Tillsonburg Developments is proud to announce the re-opening of the Baldwin Place sales centre and model home at a new location, 3 Esseltine Dr. in Tillsonburg. Currently, there are several model homes under construction, due for completion in early-spring, allowing clients to see more beautifully-designed and well-crafted all-clay brick bungalows. There are nine different home designs to choose from, available on generous sized lots of 40-, 45- and 50-ft. Or, have Tillsonburg Developments custom design a home plan for you

– you can even bring in your own home plan!Gorgeous new homes at Baldwin Place start at a very

affordable $225,900 including HST. There is a monthly $30 residential association fee that goes directly towards operation of the recreation centre, a vital part of the community. It’s an ideal space for neighbours to meet, and includes facilities such as a kitchen, fitness centre, library, salt water pool and salt water spa and numerous meeting rooms. There are also a variety of activities for Baldwin Place residents – chosen and run by the residents themselves, through the volunteer board of directors.

And now, Baldwin Place offers selected homes finished to drywall stage, allowing Tillsonburg Developments to offer quicker possession dates, while still allowing customers the option of choosing interior colours and finishes. Clients always have a choice of elements including flooring, wall colours and cabinetry, amongst others. An interior decorator is also available free of charge for Baldwin Place residents.

Each of the new homes at Baldwin Place, such as the 1,520-sq.-ft. Hampton model, includes a double garage, laundry room, two washrooms, air conditioning and high-efficiency forced-air gas furnace.

In addition to the recreation centre, there are a myriad of recreation and leisure activities within the town of Tillsonburg and surrounding area. There are approximately 30 golf courses within a 30-minute drive of Baldwin place. Downtown Tillsonburg and other municipal trails are easily accessible via a lighted path extending from the Baldwin Place community. The Municipal Tillsonburg Community Senior’s Centre is another local hot spot. During the summer months, enjoy Tillsonburg’s Farmer’s Market. No matter what the season, there’s always an activity to enjoy in Tillsonburg.

The Town of Tillsonburg boasts a bustling core with a variety of restaurants, retail outlets and the Tillsonburg Town Centre Mall, making it the perfect spot for a day of shopping or a night out on the town. There are two medical centres and a hospital, too.

Tillsonburg Developments takes great pride in the fact that its team of professionals consists of local businesspeople, all of whom live and work in the community. The pride that these professionals take in their workmanship and community is obvious with the quality of life offered at Baldwin Place. With this strong commitment to the community, plus such a wide variety of options in home customization, everyone feels at home at Baldwin Place.

It’s the perfect tIme to start plannIng your next getaway. Days Inns Canada gives seniors some useful preparation tips to help get off to the right start:

Plan ahead: Research your destination and remember to book hotel reservations well in advance. Look for national hotel chains that cater to seniors with their amenities. For example, Days Inns offer the free Daybreak Café breakfast at most locations, plus free, high-speed Internet access.

Set a budget: Create a realistic budget for your next trip but most importantly stick to it. Be on the lookout for travel deals, vacation packages and senior discounts. Remember to pack your proof of age identity card and any senior club membership cards.

Safety meaSureS: Before departing, make sure you have enough insurance coverage. Always carry your supplemental travel and heath insurance policy with you and review all insurance requirements before you leave. Keep the telephone number of your insurer handy in case of emergency.

be PrePared: Pack any medications or prescriptions in your carry-on bag and bring along enough medication to

last you the entire trip. Visit your doctor to learn about potential travel risks before you begin your trip. Also, remember to pack a first aid kit.

Stay ConneCted: It’s a good idea to give your travel itinerary to a friend or relative, so someone will always know your whereabouts. Of course, calling or sending an e-mail from the road to keep people informed is a good idea.

PARADISEFrom the consistent sunny, warm weather and beautiful beaches to the

breathtaking views and a relaxing lifestyle, Maui truly is paradise. It’s not surprising many Canadians are making this paradise even more

special by exploring Maui’s luxury real estate market.“Real estate on Maui, specifi cally the luxury real estate on Maui, is world

renowned and desired by many,” says Realtor Jai N. Jimenez with the Wailea Realty Corp. located at The Shops at Wailea. “Canadians are no exception to this desire.

“By far Canadians represent the largest foreign investors of Maui luxury real estate and continue to purchase properties both for vacation and retirement here year after year,” he says, noting that in 2011, “Canadians purchased more than $200,000,000 worth of Maui real estate.”

In the communities of Wailea and Makena, where luxury properties abound, Jimenez says there was strong activity throughout 2012. In the fi rst six months alone 58 condominiums were sold totalling more than $76 million, 17 homes closed at more than $40 million and a vacant lot sold for $5.45 million.

Ron Wilson, Realtor with Century 21 All Islands also located at The Shops at Wailea, says “of the 42 properties purchased on Maui by Canadians in 2012 for over $900,000 U.S., 33 per cent were single-family homes (most in resort areas), 40 per cent were condos all located in resort areas, 24 per cent were stand-alone single-family condo homes (a newer classifi cation of property) with about half of those in resort areas,” he says. “One vacant lot was sold, but this development property was in a resort and already divided up into four units for future construction of super-luxury condo homes.”

Wilson says Maui’s a big draw for both those seeking vacation and retirement properties because “there are few places in the world that offer Maui’s combination of near-perfect year-round climate, numerous spectacular (and uncrowded) beaches, local cuisine and fine dining, world-class water sports, breathtaking scenery and access to other amenities such as cultural attractions, national parks, etc.

“Best of all, the spirit of aloha embodied by our host culture adds a heart-warming, welcoming dimension to any visit that can’t be found anywhere else.”

In addition, Wilson says Maui has a well-deserved reputation for being safe, mellow and politically stable. “Plus we love Canadians!”

While there are many fabulous locations for purchasing property in Maui, Jimenez says the most popular areas for luxury living are South Maui in Wailea and Makena.

“South Maui is protected by Mount Haleakala, a 10,000-foot dormant volcano that blocks the predominant

northeast trade winds,” he says. “Mornings are very calm with light breezes and smooth Pacific blue waters. The wind typically comes around by the afternoon, which allows a cool, comfortable, and a very desirable climate. This climate is also very consistent, which is one of the alluring assets of South Maui.”

Another desirable benefit to living in Wailea and Makena are the amenities such as the enticing soft white sand beaches, attendant-supervised ocean activities, four challenging and convenient golf courses, many world-class dining experiences, top-rated and award-winning spas, premier shopping – The Shops at Wailea, for example, is home to high-end retailers including Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co. – and phenomenal ocean and sunset views.

“Residents of South Maui enjoy the total overall experience, it’s more than just a place to live, it’s a lifestyle,” Jimenez says. “The lifestyle here is offered with options from custom-built estates, luxurious condominiums and vacant lots that await your dream home. These are all available but limited. Maui is a very small piece of real estate that is desired by many.”

The resort areas of Ka’anapali and Kapalua in West Maui are also growing in popularity, Wilson says, and those seeking luxury properties are often looking for secured gated communities and concierge services.

Wilson believes that due to the strong Canadian dollar combined with factors like current perceived good values and low interest rates (for those who choose to finance, although most high-end sales are cash), “Maui will continue to be a great destination for Canadians.”

Wilson has luxury listings ranging from a $2.495 million, five-bedroom home in Wailea with both golf course and ocean vistas to a $10.995 million ocean front two-storey with pool, hot tub and private beach access at Makena Place.

Wilson is sure that with everything Maui has to offer, Canadians will find the right luxury property to suit their tastes: “After all Maui No Ka Oi … Maui is the best.”

LesLie styLes, foodie & traveL aficionado, shares some deLicious

dishes found on her traveLs around the worLd.

Gorgonzola, Pancetta &

onion Quichealthough quiche is now a classic dish of french cuisine, it actually originated in Germany in the medieval kingdom of Lothringen, later renamed Lorraine by the French. The term quiche came from küchen, the German word for cake. The original quiche Lorraine was an open pie with an egg and cream custard and smoked bacon or lardons. The addition of Gruyère cheese makes quiche au gruyère or quiche vosgienne. Quiche Alsacienne is similar to Quiche Lorraine, although onions are added to the recipe. These days, there are as many versions of quiche as there are culinary inspired chefs and home cooks. I recently picked up a set of mini tart pans with removable bottoms that inspired me to make these delicious mini caramelized onion, pancetta and Gorgonzola quiche. Caramelizing the onions gives them a rich, sweet flavor that complements wonderfully with the salty crisp pancetta. Add some flavourful knobs of Gorgonzola cheese and you have a mouthful of fla-vours that blossom beautifully in the savoury custard and buttery crust — the perfect addition to any brunch or luncheon buffet.

01 For the pastry, mix the flour, salt and baking powder together in a food processor fitted with a metal blade. Add butter and pulse about 20 times, to finely mix in the butter. Add the egg and egg yolk and pulse until the dough just begins to form a small ball. Turn out the dough and press into a disc about 1/2” thick. Wrap in cling film and refrigerate until ready to use.

02 Preheat oven to 400°F. Lightly brush the inside of 6 removable-bottom mini quiche pans with canola oil or Pam cooking spray. Roll out the pastry thinly on a lightly floured surface and cut out circles to line the 6 pans. Prick the base of the tart bottoms and refrigerate for 15 minutes. Then bake for 5 minutes, and remove from oven; let cool on a large baking sheet.

03 Melt the butter in a heavy frying pan and then add the chopped onions. Cook over low heat, stirring often until onions are very soft and lightly browned, about 15 minutes. Add the pancetta into the pan and cook over medium heat until crisp and browned, about 5 to 7 minutes. To compose the quiche, divide the cooked onions and sprinkle into the bottom of each of the quiche, followed by the pancetta. Break apart the Gorgonzola and divide into the 6 pans, then add the grated Parmesan cheese. Finally, sprinkle the parsley evenly over the onions and cheese. In a bowl, beat together the cream and egg yolks until light. Add the chopped rosemary and cracked pepper. Pour the egg and cream mixture evenly into each mini quiche leaving just a little room to expand.

04 Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-30 minutes or until lightly browned and set, and let stand 5 minutes before serving.
