The 130 staff that help run the Mount Gambier store and owners Bernie and Anne Knight have just been adjudged the Most Outstanding Restaurant nationally in the McDonald’s fold. “It is voted on by head office staff, by our customers who give feedback and twice a month we get secret shoppers,” Bernie said. And the Mount Gambier store

achieved 100 percent satisfaction across all three voting avenues. It’s all about checks and balances at McDonald’s to ensure company expectations are always being met. “There are our own internal checks to make sure everything is running well and then there’s the external checks from head office,” Bernie said. Across the key areas of speed of service, quality of food and cleanliness, McDonald’s Mount Gambier was top of the class. The award was handed out last month, based on 2012

performance and Bernie was thrilled about the accolade, not just for him, as an owner, who has built the business up over the past decade, but for his hard working and loyal staff. McDonald’s Mount Gambier

prides itself on retaining staff and providing opportunities not just for teenagers but for older employees as well. “It is great to look around our managers meetings and know that they’ve all been working here for well over five years,” Bernie said. “Around 35 percent of the current Mount Gambier workforce is over 21 years of age.” There is Carlien Cutting who has been with the store since it opened, Ali Coonan, who has clocked up a decade, and plenty of other stories of people finding their niche at McDonald’s Mount Gambier or using it as a stepping stone to other stores or new career opportunities. The award has been timely confirmation that Bernie and his team are getting things right. “It is great to be

Photographer and author Jo Fincham was the headline act at the launch of the 2013 Finding My Place program, which the Mount Gambier Library has been running for a couple of years now. The program is an initiative designed by the Western Australian Department of Education & Training and the City of Belmont and is designed to help keep students in a learning environment by showing them how exciting it can be. The launch of the 2013 program was last week at the Mount Gambier Library hosted by library

technician Terasa Nearmy. This program has only been possible due to the support and running of various businesses around the town. Finding My Place is a series of workshops for secondary school students who can benefit from a different learning environment to the traditional classroom. Each week the program has a different speaker and life lesson in focus, with last week’s introductory session seeing the students under the guidance of motivational speaker, successful business owner and author Jo Fincham

(pictured below and right). Jo talked about the highs and lows of her life and how she dealt with problems growing up. “It’s very easy to lose your way,” she said. “Surround yourself with positive people.” Jo has battled eating disorders and depression and along with sharing her story in her debut book Out

Of The Blue, she is an ambassador for Beyond Blue and works with local at risk teens.This year, a group of students from Mount Gambier High School, Grant High School and Allendale East Area School will attend these sessions at The Mount Gambier Library and surrounds. At the end of the 10 week program the students graduate from the program, with prizes also on offer including an Apple iPad, a 10 lesson pass to Hype Dance Studio and a bookshop voucher.

History month was officially launched last week and was highlighted by the introduction of the newly developed Mount Gambier Destitute Database. LOCAL Emergency training boost

Southern Grampians Shire Council is conducting a trial to improve road safety conditions at the

Murndal-Branxholme Road level crossing through the installation of two convex mirrors.This is the first time that

these mirrors have been trialled for this use after a recent road safety audit identified the need to improve safety at the

crossing.The mirrors which have been installed on either side of the crossing are designed to allow vehicles with restricted side/rear vision that have come to a halt the ability to view a train approaching the crossing. The trial will be conducted over a six month period and if deemed successful the mirrors will become a permanent fixture at the crossing. Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor, Cr Albert Calvano said, council was pleased to have worked with the Branxholme community to find a solution to the safety issues identified at this crossing. “All

the feedback received regarding the mirrors has been very positive and it is envisaged that the mirrors could become a permanent fixture if the remainder of the trail continues to

Portland District Health’s capacity to handle emergency cases is being improved through a new training program. The hospital has secured funding to provide 20 hours per week of on-the-job training and supervision by specialist emergency physicians. Four PDH staff members are undertaking their

Certificate of Emergency Medicine training while being supervised by experienced emergency physicians as part of the program. The program, which has been funded by Health Workforce Australia, is primarily targeted at international medical graduates (IMG). The aim is to improve training

and clinical support of non-specialist doctors providing emergency medical care. The PDH emergency department deals with almost 10,000 presentations per year. PDH emergency physician and Director of Deakin University’s Centre for Rural Emergency Medicine, Dr Tim Baker, said that

Developing a Skilled Emergency Medicine Workforce in South West Victoria program would significantly improve the skills of IMGs who may have had limited emergency training before coming to Portland. “Instead of sending staff to Warrnambool for training, under this program they are taught on the job in an environment they are used to,” Dr Baker said. Emergency physicians from Warrnambool and Ballarat are delivering the training. “It is an excellent learning experience as the Portland staff can review patients under the direction of the emergency physicians, or they can observe the physicians as they undertake the review, or they can jointly do the review,” Dr Baker said. “The IMGs will have increased skills when working alone because of the supervision and training they received.“Nursing and paramedic skills will also improve as the medical workforce adopts evidence-based emergency medicine practices. “The people of Portland and surrounding areas will benefit from this supervision and additional skills.” Dr Baker said the program was running at no cost to PDH. “It has been funded externally so PDH gets the benefits without having to pay,” he said. If the program succeeds it could be adopted in other rural centres.

I’m a bit excited at the moment because I’ve got another new job. The best thing is it’s a job where I get to make

a difference. I get to deal with one of the biggest problems that humanity is dealing with on a daily basis: misuse

of the English language. I’ve been employed by the Macquarie Dictionary misuse of language division. Essentially this

role involves looking for people or organisations who are taking a commonly used word and then misusing it for their own purposes. Obviously if these type of infringements are not detected it causes great difficulty for us at Macquarie as then when people go to look up a word, it doesn’t fit with the way it is being used. Let me give you a high profile recent example. Channel Nine have started airing their latest reality programme, Celebrity Apprentice. Now don’t jump ahead of me; reality isn’t the word which is being misused here, despite the fact that clearly none of these

shows have any relation with reality. The word the good people at Nine are misusing is “celebrity”. As most of us are aware, a celebrity is a famous or well-known person. Consider the following names. Peter Berner, Dermott Brereton, Peter Everett, Jeff Fenech, Dawn Fraser, Roxy Jacenko, Kym Johnson, Prue MacSween, Brian Mannix, Rob Mills, Stephanie Rice, John Steffenson, Prinnie Stevens and Layla Subritzky. And that’s where the problem starts. You, like me, can probably recognise about seven or eight of these “celebrities”; remember celebrity

means famous or well known. I’m confident that if half of this lot walked into any supermarket in Australia, they are not going to be recognised by anyone. You can’t even find some of them on Wikipedia. Surely this is the absolute bare minimum requirement to call yourself a celebrity.I would also contend that being a celebrity doesn’t last forever; surely there is some sort of a use by date where your celebrity title wears off. I would contend that several people on that list haven’t done anything for twenty to thirty years. No doubt they can probably walk the streets of their local

town without even getting recognised.Brian Mannix was the front man of 80s pop/rock band Uncanny X-Men who disbanded in 1987. That’s 26 years ago and even then a large chunk of Australia wouldn’t have known them. Surely if you were going to use the front man from an 80s musical group, you’re going to choose Peter Garrett. Midnight Oil was a bigger band, Garrett continues to have a large media profile due to his position in parliament, and he’s going to be looking for something to do with the rest of his life later this year. To park in a disabled car park you have to have a permit in your car. To get students’ rates on movie tickets you have to show a student I.D. card.But Channel Nine can stick any has-been on television and call them a celebrity? Surely it’s time that there was some accreditation process and people were issued with a celebrity I.D. card if they met certain criteria. If you haven’t done anything worthwhile in the last five years then your celebrity status is revoked. Personally I blame the Kardashians. Classic case of the chicken and the egg with those oxygen thieves. Were they famous and talented and that’s why they got put on TV, or were they put on TV despite no talent or redeeming features and that made them celebrities? Eventually we decided that putting a cat in the oven doesn’t make it a biscuit. Nor does sticking someone on a show called Celebrity Apprentice make someone a celebrity. CELEBRATING MOTHERS Cancer fundraiser

FEATURE Sporting grounds set to turn pink

More than 125,000 people across Australia will participate in the Mother’s Day Classic this year - and in 2013, the residents of Mount Gambier can too. The Mount Gambier Mother’s Day Classic Walk in the Park will start at 10am at the Valley Lakes this Sunday. The event is a 2, 4, 6 or 8km untimed walk or run that encourages participation for all ages and abilities. The course is flat and simple to negotiate, set amongst the natural beauty of the crater lakes precinct. There will be live music, food and various market stalls at the site, making the morning a fun and rewarding way to spend time with family on this special day. And the added bonus is that the Mother’s Day Classic brings

communities across Australia together on Mother’s Day to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. By registering to participate online at www.mothersdayclassic.com.au your entry fee becomes a donation to this worthwhile cause. More than $14.8 million has been raised for the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s research programs since the event’s inception and organisers are proud to host an event in Mount Gambier and raise extra funds to help find a cure for breast cancer. Breast Cancer affects women all around Australia and touches the lives of their family, friends and work colleagues. One in nine Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. The funding

resulting in a 27 percent decrease in mortality since 1994. There are almost 100 participants already registered for this Sunday’s inaugural event in Mount Gambier.

Pink is the colour now synonymous with breast cancer fundraising and this weekend, sporting grounds

across the region will be highlighted by distinct splashes of pink as the Western Border and Mid South East football and netball competitions continue their support of the initiative, which was established five years

ago. West Hockey Club has also decided to join the initiative this year, with hopes other clubs will come on board in future years and make it an association wide effort. West will be selling Pink Lady merchandise right throughout the weekend. The footballers usually don pink armbands for the day with both football and netball using pink balls. And on the netball courts even the not so girlie players pop a pink ribbon in their hair as part of the awareness raising and fundraising campaign. Donations are taken at all grounds to ensure the vital work of the Breast Cancer Network Australia can continue. The network is all about providing support, information and services to women diagnosed with breast cancer. In 2013, almost 15,000 women are expected to be diagnosed with the disease. Pink Sports Day is also a tribute to local women and their families that have been touched by breast cancer.

Personal recommendations never go astray when you are looking to build or renovate. Some professional associations for builders, plumbers and electricians have searchable databases on their websites. Many have now undergone ‘green’ training and accreditation to expand their skills. When you’re looking through magazines, check to see who built your favourite homes - they may be a local builder.GETTING QUOTESCreate a shortlist of builders or tradespeople you will ask for quotes - it’s always wise to get several quotes. If you’ve engaged a designer, they will prepare the tender documents for your builder. This will include the drawings as well as the specification, which spells out the standards builders must comply with and any specifics relating to building products you want them to use. Be clear about what you want builders to include in their price and what’s excluded. Also ask about the start date and how long the work will take, as this can have budget implications too. Have a ‘Brief” which will help you to communicate your priorities to your builder.CHOOSING YOUR BUILDEROnce you’ve assessed quotes, you may want to ask your preferred builder if you can see some of their past work or talk to past clients, if you haven’t already done so. There are various contracts you can use when engaging a builder. Your designer can help you identify the most suitable one. Among other things, the contract will set out payment details.

like an outdoor clothesline and water saving features like a rainwater tank.WHY NORTH FOR LIVING AREAS?North is the best position for rooms you spend a lot of time in because north-facing rooms get sun for the longest part of the day. They are also the easiest to shade from unwanted sun.

In summer when the sun is high, the right size eaves will shade north-facing rooms, while in winter when the sun is lower, sunlight will come in under the eaves. SEABL Pioneers blitz on the roadThe Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers continue to enjoy the view from the top of the South Conference standings after securing victory in both matches of their road trip at the weekend. On Saturday night the Pioneers repeated their impressive Icehouse demolition of Albury-Wodonga with a 16 point away win that was set up by a dominating opening half. By the final change, the Pioneers led by 22 points but powered down a little in the final term with perhaps one eye on Sunday’s clash with Sandringham. Once again it was an even team effort where Brad Hill and Erik Burdon top scored with 20 points apiece but enjoyed plenty of support from an improving Titus Robinson (18); Ben Allen (15) and Jan Warbout (9). Allen was also prolific on the boards, pulling in 14 rebounds, 13 of them defensive, ensuring the Bandits got very few second

chance baskets. It was Allen and Robinson that also led thew way in Sunday’s 25 point win over the Sabres. Allen scored 19 and again dominated the boards with a game high 14 rebounds as he continues to prove why he’ll be a critical pick up for the Pioneers and their quest to return to the play-offs after an eight season absence. Robinson also looks to be settling into life in the SEABL, clocking up 26 points and pulling in 13 rebounds. Hill and Burdon were again solid with 16 points apiece with Hill working the boards hard as well with 10 rebounds. The two road victories gives the Pioneers a season record of 7-3 as they head into a Friday night home clash against Geelong in what is a clash of the top teams in each conference. Geelong has an 8-2 record and will be looking to return to the winners’ list after a 10 point home court loss to the South Conference’s second ranked side - Hobart.

WBFL Another first for ChapmanMatthew Chapman has been around for a long time but the past nine months has been all about firsts. Last season he was one of four long suffering North Gambier players to finally taste premiership success and on Saturday be clocked up 300 games for his beloved Tigers - North honouring the champion player with a massive131 point victory, the first time Chapman has enjoyed a win in a milestone contest. Injury has cruelled the career of this highly respected Tiger but the premiership and the 300 game milestone has made all the struggles worthwhile. Former coach and team mate Peter Collins rates Chapman as one of the top ten players at North Gambier and heaped nothing but praise on the hard working utility. “He’s a very dogged competitor,” Collins said. “He runs in straight lines, he is fearless and just a great team player.” Chapman is also valued at North Gambier for his onfield communication skills and while it is his workrate and courage that most people notice, Collins said Chapman was also a highly silled footballer. There would have been plenty of times in Chapman’s long career that he would never have dreamed of being a 300 game player for the Tigers, with an inordinate amount of broken bones and other serious injuries sidelining him for long periods of time. “He fought back really hard from every injury,” Collins said. “He has definitely got the most out of himself and I loved coaching him because you didn’t have to say much to him because you knew what you would get from him

and that he would work as hard as possible for as long as possible.” Chapman’s current coach Justin McConnell, was of course the man that helped deliver that drought breaking grand final victory. Chapman, along with team mates David Nulty, Scott Flett and Jamie O’Neil, had played in a number of gut wrenching grand final losses together - for Chapman the 2012 title was a case of fifth time lucky and took 297 games. “What he brings is what we try to get from every player,” McConnell said. “He is willing to play whatever role he needs to for his team to win.” Much as Collins intimated, McConnell said Chapman was a great example for young players and much of the week’s focus had been on Chapman’s qualities and finally notching up a win for the club champion in a milestone game. “He is the ultimate team player and so highly regarded within the club,” McConnell said. “Not only the players but the supporters and members as well.” The current coach said Chapman was outstanding on the training track and the kind of player who leads by example and lets his actions do the talking. “He never misses a training session, never misses a recovery session - he is committed to the whole football program,” McConnell said. Chapman kicked two goals in Saturday’s victory.
