Deschutes River Raft Weekend - Maupin OR

July 14-16 2006 (Friday - Sunday)This was our third annual raftingtrip on the Deschutes We campedout for 2 or 3 nights in the MaupinCity Park by the river

We rafted on Friday and Saturdayusing a variety of paddle boats rowboats and inflatable canoes Theweather was perfect Everybody hadbuckets of fun

Summer Skiing at TimberlineJuly 23 2006 (Sunday) How do you get relief from the oppressive heaton one of the hottest days of the year with temperatures soaring to106ordmF Simple Go skiing Timberline is open till Labor Day

This was not an official club trip Just a few of the Mt HoodlumsPACRAT team racers who decided to cool off on the Palmer snowfieldabove Timberline

We had great snowIt was so warm allnight that the snow

never froze so we did not have to ski on ice early in themorning The snow was perfect from the start and itstayed good all day long from 700 am to 130 pm (whenthe lifts close) As some of the snow has melted away fromthe slopes west of the lift it created several islands of rockwith snow meandering between them providing a playfulchallenge and a fun place to ski Of course the official skiterrain east of the lift was wide and smooth and you couldski down the canyon almost all the way to the parking lot

Since Warner Canyon is closed Monday - Thursday the besttime to visit (for fresh tracks) would be on a Friday if you cantake the day off We could drive there on Thursday eveningafter work If not we could leave Friday evening

Whatrsquos New at Ski AreasSeveral ski resorts are building

new express lifts

Timberline has begun cutting treesfor the new trails as of July 2006The new lift will not be ready for thisupcoming season but should be inservice for the 200708 season

The new liftrsquos top station will beright next to the bottom of the MagicMile and the trails will go lower thanthe lowest point of Pucci openingnew trails between Storminrsquo Normanand Pucci

The upper parts of the existing Gladeand Alpine trails (which both descendto Government Camp but arecurrently not patrolled) will be used

Note This is not the new gondolathat had been rumoured earlierwhich might some day follow the Glade Trail all the way down to Government Camp to provide extra parkingspace at Government Camp so people would not need to drive all the way up to Timberline

Silver Star (British Columbia) has added a new lift last season - in theSilver Woods area For this season it is adding yet another lift in theAttridge area - which used to be a hidden powder stash for the locals onthe far left of the front side of the mountainBig White (Silver Starrsquos big brother area) is also adding a new expresslift for this season It will parallel the Ridge Rocket Express but slightlymore to the left Big White has also added the Cliff Chair 2 seasons agoto serve a steep back bowl (see photo) Due to lack of early snow we havenot skied that bowl yet on our ski safaris Maybe itrsquos time for anothermid-winter trip to Big White

Whistler (BC) as of May 2006 is buildingldquoPiccolordquo a high speed quad to serve a bowl leftof the Harmony bowl Itrsquos a little travelledarea because itrsquos hard to find the Burnt Stewaccess where Emilio found untouched powderon the last day of our trip to Whistler in April2004 This lift opens up 1000 new acres

Powder Mountain (Utah) famous for itrsquos powder and slow lifts is addingits first Express quad the Hidden Lake Express for this season - 0607Mission Ridge (Washington) has replaced itrsquos main lift with an expresslast season but none of us (excpet Linda and Bruce) have had a chanceto ride it yet So this will be a new experience for most of us on this yearrsquosbus trip to Washington (in March 2007)

A Unfortunately Delta has decided to black out thewhole weekend around Presidentrsquos Day meaning

that the tour operators cannot sell group tickets for thatperiod This means we would either have to shorten thetrip to only 6 days and go home on Thursday or weneed to switch airlines and keep the trip at 7 days Wedecided to go with Southwest Airlines for a full 7 days
