n The mission of Court Appointed Special

Advocates (CASA) of Santa Barbara County

is to assure a safe, permanent, nurturing

home for every abused and/or neglected child

by providing a highly trained volunteer to

advocate for them in the court system.

The images in this publication are not of children we serve. These kids are happy, smiling representatives that inspire us as we help the hurting kids we do serve to have their own happy endings.

A YEAR IN REVIEW

Throughout history, passionate individuals have brought about change by speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves.

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) makes a difference by providing dedicated volunteers to advocate in court for our most vulnerable children – those who are in the child protection system. Our volunteer-centered organization is fueled by a remarkably diverse group of people who share the same vision: a world in which every abused or neglected child is given the opportunity to thrive in a safe and loving home.

CASA makes a differenceSince its creation by a juvenile court judge in Seattle,

Court Appointed Special Advocates has become one of the most effective programs of its kind. It is a unique blend of private support, public need and the kind of

people power that comes from more than 300 local volunteers all committed to the rights of every child in the foster care and child welfare system in our county.

Throughout our twenty-two years of service to abused and neglected children, the community—from individuals to corporations to community partners—has responded passionately to this vision, so we continue to set our goals to expand to meet the needs of the children. By fiscal year end 2016, more volunteers and more donors than ever were involved with and invested in our organization. We provided intensive advocacy to a record 487 children, more than double the number of children served just five years ago. CASA of Santa Barbara County is an expression of our community’s will to care for its children. Thanks to your support, the goal of providing a CASA to every child who needs one is within reach.

CASA annual report 2016_Final10112016.indd 4 10/11/2016 4:30:39 PM

“If we want a better worldwe need to start somewhere,

even if it is with just one child.”

We are inspired every day by our volunteers and the community supporting CASA and the children we serve. At her recent swearing-in ceremony, one of our volunteers spoke of her

experience training to be a CASA and her commitment to serve. “If we want a better world we need to start somewhere, even if it is with just one child,” she shared with the court. “I have the time, I have the heart, and I am ready to help. CASA allows me to do that.”

Thank you for being with us on the journey as we strive to make a better world, one child at a time.

CASA VOLUNTEERS CHANGE LIVES• CASA volunteers provide a voice for the most vulnerable children in our community.

• A child with a CASA volunteer is more likely to find a safe, permanent home and less likely to spend three or more years in care.

• A child with a CASA volunteer is half as likely to re-enter the foster care system.

• A child with a CASA volunteer is more likely to succeed in school.

• Most importantly, the children themselves report that they know they can rely on their CASA volunteer.

OUR CHILDREN

*Name and photograph are fictitious.

December is a special month for nine-year-old Aiden.* Not because

of the holidays, which bring with them yummy food and a few new toys to play with, but because it is his birthday month.

Every year, his parents throw a celebratory party at their three-bedroom home loaded with decorations, cards and presents. They each split duties: Dad excitedly invites all of Aiden’s friends and Mom orders a big cake decorated with Aiden’s favorite colors—blue and red.

CASA annual report 2016_Final10112016.indd 16 10/11/2016 4:30:47 PM

“It’s the best!” he always exclaims to guests, with a smile from ear to ear.

But Aiden’s birthday wasn’t always filled with such happiness. Though he doesn’t remember it, Aiden was born into abuse and neglect.

He experienced both for the first time within the hospital’s four walls the very moment he was born; Aiden’s birth mother was a drug addict who abused drugs during her pregnancy.

While still in the hos-pital, Aiden was referred to Child Welfare Services (CWS). He later moved in with his birth father, who

was separated from his mother at the time. For more than three years, Aiden endured a tumultu-ous existence. His parents continued to have an on again/off again relationship with one another, feeding off each other’s substance abuse and addictions and providing an unsafe living environment for Aiden.

Shortly after Aiden turned four, he was found with bruises and scars across his body. His social worker knew the little boy needed a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) to ensure his urgent needs were met. That is how Aiden

met Justine. Justine devoted her time

to Aiden and never gave up. She tirelessly advocated for his well-being, confident there was a loving home out there for him.

And Justine was right. Within a year, Aiden was adopted by a couple named Bill and Suzanne who continuously work hard to ensure he has a bright and stable future.

Now Aiden gets to be just a kid, enjoying each year that passes by.

Other than December, October is his favorite month. Not because of Halloween, with all of the

make-believe, dressing up and candy, but because of one other very special reason. When asked why, Aiden gleefully exclaims, “That’s when I met my CASA!” n
