Lift Urban Portland2013 Board of Directors “No act of kindness, no matter how small,

is ever wasted.” - Aesop

The chemotherapy treatments that “John” received left him debilitated, unable to get out of his apartment. He now has food delivered to his home,

thanks to the volunteers at Lift Urban Portland.

This is the type of story that inspires me, making that vital difference in the lives of our neighbors.

As a nurse at Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center, I am proud of the partnership we have with Lift Urban Portland. Last fall our nurses provided 160 flu

shots to uninsured adults. Our work with the May food drive brought in 3,525 pounds of food and $1,745 in cash for food programs. Our backpack drive benefited the Food for Kids Backpack program last winter.

New initiatives brought irrigation to our gardens, increasing fresh produce for our food programs. We also grew our Food for Kids Backpack delivery, providing weekend food backpacks to children living at Northwest Tower Annex.

On the development side, we had a fun-filled evening at our first Garden Party, raising $64,000. We enjoyed an evening with friends at Artists Repertory Theatre. And in February, we introduced 50 new businesses to Lift Urban Portland over breakfast.

Thank you for joining us for a wonderful year of service. I encourage everyone to give Lift Urban Portland a call and learn about great volunteer opportunities.

Yours in faith,

Desi Shubin, Lift Urban Portland Board President

“This is the type of story that inspires me, making that vital difference in

the lives of our neighbors.”

Year in Review

Page 3: Lift UP Annual Report 2012-13

This past June, we asked our Food for Kids Backpack families if they would like to receive food boxes during the summer

months, and asked for additional comments about the program. Overwhelmingly, parents replied they would like to see the “junk food treats” replaced by more healthy food options. This crystallizes our strategic plan identified in February 2012, when the board and our community partners determined to look at preventive programs for people that will contribute to overall wellness.

We are launching our wellness program with a two-year pilot venture funded by the Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund, The Collins Foundation, and PGE. This will be carried out at six low income apartment buildings. Our volunteers will provide exercise programs and healthy cooking classes. We will also offer monthly wellness training, in partnership with Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center. In addition, flu shots will be given to those who are uninsured. Lift Urban Portland will partner with the PSU Institute on Aging, as we survey participants before and after the pilot program.

Our Nutrition Committee also is looking at wellness, in particular how our food programs impact the lives of our community members. Nutrition information fliers from Oregon Food Bank and SNAP brochures from Stop Oregon Hunger will be available throughout our food programs. Our organic produce garden has contributed greatly to providing a well-balanced food box for home use. Our program to encourage people to “Plant a Row” in their gardens brought in even more produce for redistribution to those in need.

To all of you who provide the “can do” spirit which makes Lift Urban Portland happen: Thank you!

canned foods and staple foods at the Irving Street pantry – “this is the REAL difference.”

A History of HelpingMichael’s work with community organizations started in 1992 in San Diego, driving an AIDS bus. “People would get on the bus with IV drip bags. We didn’t even know if they could make it onto the bus sometimes.” Michael made sure that every journey was accompanied with additional dignity and hope.

Michael moved to Portland in 2002, and continued transporting neighbors in need. He worked with us for two years, driving people and supplies in a borrowed van. In 2004, Michael moved to the Seattle area, where he owned and ran his own business. He began volunteering with Hopelink, a Kirkland-based nonprofit that connects and serves five communities.

The Other Side of the CoinMichael’s life was greatly affected by the recent recession. After years building his real estate portfolio, Michael found himself without

prospects, and later lost his business. Michael began looking for the same kind of assistance that he now provides at Lift Urban Portland.

In 2010, Michael returned to Portland, “where people move for a sense of community, not just to make a lot of money.” In rejoining with Lift Urban Portland’s mission, Michael now gives back to our neighbors that same hope, dignity and assistance that he himself received.

The Next StepHow can Lift Urban Portland improve our services? Michael hopes that logistics and wellness options will continue to expand in our food pantry. He envisions a simple computer check-in that can replace the paper roll sheet we currently use. He also dreams that healthy food options will become a part of every recipient’s life.

Lift Urban Portland thrives due to people like Michael. His support is constant, and he knows that we can always get better. For the recipients he sees each month, Michael says, “Yes, I can say I know what it’s like. I’ve been there.”

Sometimes we give. Sometimes we receive. At Lift Urban Portland, we are honored to do both.

Thank you, Michael, and all the volunteers at Lift Urban Portland that make “the real difference.”

Ask our volunteers at Lift Urban Portland, and you’ll hear the transforma-tive stories they witness while helping

community members in need. But these stories mean so much more if you’ve been there yourself.Every Friday, Michael Roberts serves as the team leader at Lift Urban Portland’s food pantry, located at the First Immanuel Lutheran Church in northwest Portland.“People can get lost in their job. Like the ‘banksters,’ for instance. They might live thinking that what is important for their bosses, or just making money, is something significant.”“But this” – he motions to shelves of bread,

Our 2012 Spotlight Award was presented to Preston Holt at our Garden Party fundraiser in August. If you’ve worked with Lift Urban Portland, you may know Preston, his smiling eyes, cooperative attitude, and dedication to helping our community.

Preston began working with us 20 years ago. A former Scoutmaster and commercial real estate broker, Preston is a fourth-generation Oregonian. His ancestors include those “brazen overlanders” who defined community in the early days of Oregon’s statehood.

Preston discovered Northwest Portland Ministries, our former name, through his home church of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. He began working with our transportation program, well before we acquired our company van. Later years saw Preston joining our board for several terms, including stints as president and treasurer.Preston’s dedication is both spiritual and practical. “I just can’t sit around home for hours doing nothing,” says Preston, “when there’s such rewarding work to be done.” And he finds reward in many places, whether working as a regular volunteer in our office, or dressing up like St. Nicholas for holiday benefits.Preston is especially proud of services that have been added to Lift Urban Portland’s mission, ones that he helped nurture and grow. We hope you can meet Preston and thank him for his undying spirit of volunteering. Better yet, join him in one of his many activities with Lift Urban Portland, and catch the spirit yourself.
