Light Painting World Alliance (LPWA) is an international, self-juried guild of established and emerging professional light painting artists.
The LPWA’s purpose is to promote light painting as an art form as wellas to promote the works of artist members.
The Alliance proclaimed its Manifesto in 1 December 2011. Since then, hundreds of artists from around the globe have joined LPWA.
We have managed 9 international events, including 4 worldwide exhibitions (Moscow 2012, Paris 2013, Oviedo 2014 and Paris 2015), where more than 100 top artistswere presented.
All LPWA events include educational activities. Our priority is to engage the public with light painting.
The Alliance has provided artistic support to the UNESCO’s International Year Of Light 2015 as Collaborative Partner.
We firmly believe that our art form is the most graphically effective way to illustratethe properties of Light. We make the movements of light visible! Our slogan is: “Light is Paint, Night is Canvas”. We highlight the creative potential of light, and in doing so, we are able to give artistic formto the International Year Of Light 2015’s most noble goal, of making the citizens of the world aware of the importance of light and optical technologies in their lives, for their futures,and for the development of society. Light painting is an artistic photographic technique where light sources are manuallyapplied by photographers to a single long exposure frame.Long exposure photography has been around since the early days of daguerreotypes. Early artistic light painting photographs began to be created in the early 20th century by master artists Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Man Ray and Picasso.
Since those early days, light painting has evolved to become a genre that is growing in sophistication and popularity across the globe.
Light painting artworks are often mistaken for being “photoshopped”due to the surreal and psychedelic effects that are created. While artists use a variety of light sources from simple flashlights, lasers and LED lights to ignited steel wool, electric wire and pyrotechnics to illuminate their photographic composition, they do not use post-processing software to add to their photographsin any way.
LPWA light painting world exhibitions are always presented “screen” style:artworks are shown in the manner in which they were born – as shining stream of photons on plasma screen monitors. This provides a very unique and modern energy, and is the most pure form of the light painting artworks. Each monitor contains a slide show of 10 images – all together they create a stunning impression of an infinite light universe.
In addition to its artistic merit, this exhibition model has a number of advantages:
no cost of printing items,
no cost for transportation and storage of printed images,
no risk of unauthorized distribution of images,
monitors can reduce the need for the use of larger exhibition spaces.
Educational activities usually include:
Master classes and workshops
A live light painting photo-booth, where visitors can have a personal light painting portrait taken,and even create their own light paintings.

Entertainment activities usually include:
A live light painting show on-stage; a combination of choreography and real time light painting projected onto a wall
A collection of light painting animation projects, also presented on monitors
Various massive light painting flash mobs
Various light painting contests conducted during the current event
All activities are open to all.

Activities included: live light painting shows, master classes, workshops, round table, photo-booth, a massive light painting flash mob, historical lecture, animation show and a premiere presentation of various light painting techniques.
