Biography for Becky Goldsmith

Becky Goldsmith is an award-winning quilter who travels

to teach quilting both nationally and internationally.

Her classes are always interesting and informative,

with an emphasis on teaching techniques that help you

improve your sewing skills without making you crazy.

Becky started Piece O'Cake Designs with Linda Jenkins

in 1994. They published more than 30 books and

hundreds of patterns, including 7 Blocks of the Month.

Linda retired in 2014 and Becky has continued writing

books and patterns.

Making quilts is interesting, fulfilling, and challenging—

and being a member of the quilting community is an

added bonus. Becky never imagined that being a quilter

would become her life’s work, but she’s so happy that it

did!

Please let your friends and neighbors know about our

September meeting. Lakeshore Middle School is

located on Cutler Street, west of Hwy. 31, between

Grant and Park Streets. There will be parking at the

school, at the parking area across from the school,

street parking AND lots of parking at United

Methodist Church of the Dunes—just a three block

walk from the school.

If you are able to help at the event, we can use folks to

direct parking and to act as ushers when guests arrive.

LQG Board

Our next meeting is September 9, and the next

board meeting is September 17 at 6:30 pm in Room

B in the Loutit Library

Upcoming Programs and Classes Wendy Rice & Dianne Gustafson Sign-up sheets and additional information for classes will be at the program table at each meeting. For additional information, questions or ideas for next year, contact Wendy Rice (616-481-1755 / [email protected]) or Dianne Gustafson (616-844-1659 / [email protected] ). September 9, 2019:

Program: Joint meeting with PALS, hosted by Lighthouse Quilt Guild at Lakeshore Middle School Auditorium. Featured speaker is Becky Goldsmith of Piece O’Cake. https://www.pieceocake.com/ Doors will open at 6:00 pm and Becky will speak at 7:00 pm. Her lecture is entitled “A Practical Approach to Color.” You must wear or bring your current LQG membership card to the lecture. Guests and friends are welcome. There will be a $10.00 charge for non-members. We have released this information to PALS members, neighboring Michigan guilds, and the general public. Classes: Becky will offer two six-hour workshops at the church.

Monday, September 9, 10 am–4 pm, Texas Tulips, a wool applique class.

Tuesday, September 10, 10 am–4 pm, Bullseye, a paper-piecing class.

Each class is $65.00 for members, $75.00 for non-members. Bullseye has an additional kit fee of $5.00 for the vellum paper which Becky finds best for paper piecing. You will make one 20” square She has an excellent video on her website explaining the bullseye construction. Class size is limited to just 20 each day. Don’t miss out—let Wendy or Dianne know if you still want to sign up.

October 14, 2019: Program: Kristine Curtis will present a slide show on “The History of Quilting.” Here is the background on Kris in her own words: “I have been quilting for more than 45 years…but my real interest in quilts is their history and the stories they tell. I collect vintage textiles and needlework, teach historical needlework techniques…and have published a number of articles about vintage sewing. I’ll be bringing along antique and vintage fabrics as well as printed material about quilts and quilting.” Members are encouraged to bring vintage or antique quilts of their own and she will attempt to identify fabrics and techniques used.

Also that evening, Outreach will have a SALE TABLE of fat quarters and other quilt-shop quality fabrics. Come early for best selection!

November 11, 2019:

Progam: Phyllis Fay, a certified instructor for Deb Tucker’s Studio 180, and co-author of Tucker University, a series of technique classes on Studio 180 Design tools. Phyllis will present an overview and demonstration of Studio 180 tools and techniques and offer them for sale. Deb Tucker’s booth at AQS always attracts a crowd; we think you will find Phyllis’s lecture entertaining and informative.

Traditional holiday gathering; members bring desserts. If you have some fun and festive program ideas for December, please share them with your program chairs.

Any questions or ideas for next year, please contact Wendy Rice or Dianne Gustafson.

PALS has asked us to share this information about its October speaker:

In October we will be hosting Diane Knott, of Butterfly Threads Quilting, to teach and lecture. On Sunday she's being very creative and teaching two workshops together! You decide which class you'd like and that's the pattern you buy. One of those patterns has pumpkins in the border but Ms. Knott says the color way can be changed and you could put apples or stars in the border instead! Sunday’s class is for all skill levels and the Monday class, Diane Knott's most popular class, is for confident beginners to advanced. Sunday Oct. 7 Origami Galaxy or Pumpkins in the Patch Monday Oct 8 Under the Mistletoe 9:30 am-4:00 pm at Quilted Memories in Montague Cost $55 members, $65 non-members, Patterns $10

Community Outreach Elizabeth Clark and Kim Frisch

We appreciate all the lovely baby quilts and breast cancer comfort quilts turned in at the August meeting. IMPORTANT: Please note that we won't be taking in quilts at the September guild meeting, so please hold onto them for October's meeting. Membership Christine Sinkiawic At our August meeting we welcomed 4 new members, Shirley Poll, Karie Sortman, Adele Williams and Janet Jackson. Lighthouse Quilt Guild dues for the 2019-2020 year are due at the September meeting; $20/yr. if the newsletter is sent by e-mail, or $25. if the newsletter to mailed to you. Raffle Elizabeth Clark We will be drawing a winning ticket at the September meeting. We will be selling tickets in the Admissions area at that meeting, and if you need tickets to sell beforehand, please call Elizabeth Clark at (616) 212-0844 to arrange for them. Also, if you have unsold tickets, please turn them in when you arrive by placing them in an envelope marked with your name and phone number and giving them to one of the people at the table with the quilt. Quilt Show Co-Chair Amy Stuparits I want to say congratulations to all the 2019 Quilt Show winners! Also I want to express a deep appreciation to all the volunteers including husbands, kids and friends that help setup and takedown the show. We couldn't have done it without all their sweaty help! I am ready to have a shadow, assistant or apprentice for this year’s quilt show for 2020. Everything is ordered in a binder and labeled with many lists of things to help you. This will be my final show and I would like to be able to pass off my duty next year to someone who is prepared. The show Chair position is not a difficult one. You basically attend meetings at 6pm prior to the guild meeting and check in with all the different heads of departments. The team consists of food moms, a publicity person, the boutique, the registration gals, the setup team, the volunteer lead and the vendor coordinator. The chair’s job is to make sure they are getting along ok and if they need something or help you offer it. The only time you are really heading the show is the days leading up to the show on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Those are the four big days and on those days you are just making sure all volunteers and leads are getting along ok and things are running smoothly. Also Karen Katje is stepping down as lead for Rack Cards. She has also compiled a small binder of things to help the person coming in to replace her. Things like how many posters to order, how many rack cards to order, planning the look of the rack card with the help of VerDuins Printing. Karen has done this job for many years and is ready to sit back. PLEASE CONTACT ME AT ([email protected]) TO VOLUNTEER FOR ONE OF THESE TwO POSITIONS

If anyone has quilt show theme ideas for next year, I would love to hear suggestions so please feel free to email me at the above email. Finally, I want to just give everyone a reminder of our quilt show numbers and let you know we did well overall. Money collected from admissions was down quite bit to $3,264 from $4,175 in 2018. Overall our net income was $4,951 this year (last year was $4,886). Boutique did well making $2,476 where last year it made $2,449. I had a wonderful time being LQG Co-Chair from 2017-2019 but I will enjoy being able to sit back and enjoy the guild and where it goes under our two new Co-Presidents Carol Keen and Jackie Baden! Welcome ladies, I hope you enjoy the position and you keep pushing the guild to do great things. Quilt Show Boutique Leslie Johnson I've been asked what I do with the leftovers from the show boutique. There are two groups who receive donations from us after the sale. The first group meets at Bread of Life Lutheran Church of Baldwin. From my contact: "We use quilting cottons mostly, and sometimes upholstery fabric for student bags. We pass a lot of odd fabrics on to art teachers, and apparel fabric to people who teach sewing skills and such. We often use knits, used sheets (and also really garish pieces) for the middle layer of quilts because buying enough batting for all the quilts would be very expensive. We regularly donate a quilt for each member of every Habitat for Humanity family in Kent and Ottawa County, matching them to recipient's age and gender. We also give some to Family Promise where homeless families are housed in a rotating set of churches. Every fall we send 100 to countries around the world through Lutheran World Relief. In the past we have given to Meals on Wheels for Christmas gifts for its recipients, to children of National Guard soldiers deploying to the Middle East, to the Red Cross, to Heartside's formerly homeless people who move into apartments, and just to folks we hear about who are ill or could use encouragement. Once we cooperated with other groups to give a lap quilt to every child (450 in all) at an inner city elementary school." Anyone who would like to join them is welcome. They meet every Tuesday from 1-4 pm. See me if you need directions. The second group is in Holland and my contact is guild member Lorelle Eberly. This group makes knit caps from knit fabrics for chemo patients. Flannel fabric is great for making burp cloths for babies in need. Cotton fabrics are used for quilts for babies, quilts of valor and quilts for older kids at the Center For Women in Transition. These groups have been grateful for the fabrics that are left at the end of the boutique sale. As you can see, your donations are put to good use. Thank you all. Thank You Char Lozicki

The August LQG meeting was my last meeting as chairperson. When I was voted in and I accepted the position, I realized being new in the organization, I needed to learn a lot. I also knew it was a group of very talented and friendly people. I was right I needed to learn a lot and there were people ready and willing to help.

At our August meeting I was presented with a very beautiful quilt with all the blocks made by LQG members. It was also good timing at the beginning of my arm recovering and many other time consuming events starting to slow down.

I thank all of you for the quilt and for all the work and contributions the guild makes to the community. We welcome Carol Keen and Jackie Baden as our new Co-Presidents.
