Aims and IntentionsMy building function is a library. The ideal lux level for this function, for users to read is around 300lux to 500lux (which is more common-for office users).MATERIALS: I am going to use concrete as my main structure and as a finish surface, but timber floor-ing would be used so it feels lighter and it gives a better lighting effect by reflection of its colours. The building is of non-rectangular shape, and the room that I am going to model is similar to the shape of a pyramid.DAYLIGHTING DEVICE: The sky-light is the big rectangular hole at where the four slanted concrete walls meet to allow light.and there will be a triangular ribbon windows that runs across which points to the North.

YE-EUN (YENI) JEONDIGITAL LIGHTING ANALYSIS Daylight Render and Analysis

Light meter was confined to this rectangular shape within the building, which would be the normal accessible spaces for human to walk or read so itis fine. I used CIE Overcast sky to render. And put the light meter about 1.5 metresfrom ground. The result it displayed below.

There are anomalies as the grid doesn’t quite fit into the space (meter haspoked out of the walls), but I used the export spreadsheet to calculate the averagelux level of the space is 819.489lx (ignoring the ~9000lx anomalies). This seemed to be very bright for the space, with heavy glare in space because of the extreme of darkness and brightness where openings are.

Average total illuminance = 819.489lx

Average Daylight factor = 7.59

From these calculations, the ideal daylightfactor is around 5 for reading, which means this space is sufficient for reading, but maybedarker with artificial task-lighting is morefriendly.

For night time of this library I would like this space to transform into a small amphitheatre where speakers can stand and talk in this big space, (acoustically would be interesting because of the shape of room) and so the main aim is to create spotlight dramatic light-ing effect for the “stage” spot, where every-one else can sit on the floor. At first I chose to use pendent lights which is behaves as spotlights that hangsdown from the ceiling. However I realised this was not enough because it only create one patch of light at one space.

As you see from the render it seems quitea pleasant place to have a speech visually -the pendent lights worked. The additional spotlights were put into to shine the walls up.this is a more pleasant space to sit and look up to.But light meter analysis shows that it is very darkat some places (under 10lx), and more brightspace has maximum of 145lx for the dramatic spotlight.

Pseudo lighting shows the hotspotsof the lights. The floor receives andreflects most light and the walls alsohave some brightness.

CONCLUSIONSThere are errors in the investigations. I think that the daylight settings may not be correct when I rendered the image digitally, but qualitatively it achieves the effect what I wanted, whereas quantitatively, the read-ings are a bit out of proportion.Artificial lighting was useful to achieve what I want the space to look like, but there are more to improve so light levels are more user-friendly.
