DEAR FRIEND,
IN A DAY WHEN EVEN PEOPLE WITHIN THE CHURCH
try to redefi ne what it means to be a Christian, it is important for
us all to understand the importance of Christian orthodoxy —
that body of content that is the authentic Christian religion.
Orthodoxy rests on three pillars: history — the conviction that
God is working out His purposes through His people; truth — the gospel
of Jesus Christ delivered once and for all to the saints; and faith — the
conviction that salvation is found only through trusting in Christ alone.
This winter we will be gathering again in central Florida for our annual
Ligonier Academy conference. Drs. Stephen Nichols and Carl Trueman
will be joining me for lectures on the theme History, Truth, Faith —
Pillars of Christian Orthodoxy on January 21–22, 2011, on the campus
of Ligonier Academy. This promises to be an exciting time of teaching
and fellowship as we explore these elements that are essential to the
health of the church.
I hope that you will be able to join us this winter for this important
and timely conference. As we understand more deeply the pillars of
orthodoxy, we will be able to stand for Jesus, fi rm in our faith.
In Christ,
R.C. Sproul

9:00 – 10:10 A.M. Session 2: HistoryOur God upholds, directs, disposes, and governs all creatures, actions, and things, from the
greatest to the least, by His most wise and holy providence. In short, what God creates, He
sustains. In this lecture, Stephen Nichols examines the biblical doctrine of providence, showing
that God upholds all things by His power and that in Him we live, move, and have our being.
11:00 – 11:50 A.M. Session 3: TruthDuring the sixteenth century, the Protestant Reformers appealed to Scripture alone (sola Scriptura). They recognized that all Scripture is God-breathed. It is the Word of the living
God. Scripture is therefore infallible and inerrant and our only rule of faith and practice. In
this lecture, Carl Trueman explains how the Word of God is truth and as such, our standard.
2:00 – 2:50 P.M. Session 4: Questions & AnswersStephen Nichols, R.C. Sproul, and Carl Trueman
2:50 – 3:40 P.M. Session 5: FaithThroughout her history, the church has been forced to fight those who have attempted to
ground justification on human merit and works or some combination of faith and merit. This
conflict came to a head in the Western church during the sixteenth-century Reformation. In
this lecture, Carl Trueman explains the importance of maintaining the doctrine of
justification by faith alone.
4:30 – 5:20 P.M. Session 6: Post Tenebras LuxThe phrase “post tenebras lux” (after darkness, light), a rallying cry of Protestant Reformers,
refers to the rediscovery of biblical truth in a time of spiritual darkness. Because the
darkness of heresy and immorality constantly creeps in, the church must always be seeking
to rediscover the light. In this lecture, R.C. Sproul examines the obligation and role of the
Christian academy in recovering and proclaiming the light of truth.
