Scholarship for the Study of Critical and Less Commonly Taught Languages, 2013-2014

The Division of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures (DWLLC) offers an opportunity to learn critical and less commonly taught languages through autonomous language learning. This is open to University of Iowa students whose academic or professional goals require knowledge of a critical or less commonly taught language. Many international opportunities require communication skills in a language NOT currently taught at the University of Iowa. With the support of the Autonomous Language Learning Network (ALLNet) staff members, learners design their own study plans to learn basic language skills or improve upon existing skills in preparation for academic or professional goals. Upon admission into the program, learners will be provided with learning materials and with a language/culture consultant. Students wishing to participate in ALLNet should complete an on-line application form. More information about the ALLNet program: http://clas.uiowa.edu/dwllc/allnet. Participant applications are due on January 30th, 2014 for spring semester. For more information on how to become a consultant for ALLNet, or if you are a student who wishes to study critical or less commonly taught languages (LCTLs), please contact Elena Osinskaya, DWLLC Language Initiatives manager, [email protected].

International Studies Juniors and Seniors:

Thinking about transferrable skills that you will need to get jobs after you graduate? Looking for 1 s.h. for spring 2014? Enroll in this 8-week class on ISIS:

187:096:002 (IS:3011:0002)

Library Strategies for Int'l Research Begins: Mar 13, 2014 Ends: May 08, 2014

3:00P - 4:35P Th 4037 LIB

Ask around! This course is NOT just for students who are completing 187:199 Intl Studies Senior Project or 187:198 Honors Thesis Intl Studies.

This is a course that will teach you research/ library skills that will help you in your other University of Iowa classes, and also importantly will give you transferrable skills that will make you more competitive after graduation in such fields as teaching; policy work; non-profit advocacy; marketing/ communications, etc.

Here is what other IS students who have taken the course have said:

“This class opens your methods of finding research and information that you didn’t even know existed.”

“It alerted me to the amount of sources which are available, and how to find

them on specific databases.”

“I would have loved to have known these resources before my last year at UI.” Instructor: Brett Cloyd. [email protected], 319-335-5743 http://guides.lib.uiowa.edu/intl_studies Learn about research tools to help give any project focus. Become an expert on a research database and share your experience with classmates. Do one-on-one research consultation with a librarian, plus referrals when appropriate. Increase your awareness of the scholarly research process: good for those looking to go

to grad school. Sessions on Government Information will help you include primary research material

like reports and hearings. Students will search newspaper databases and statistical datasets. Citation Help. Keeping track of your citations can be time consuming and frustrating,

but you need to do a good job to avoid plagiarism. RefWorks is a handy tool that helps you keep track of what you have used. Once you create an account, you can look for ways to export citations in the various library databases (like Smart Search, or the EbscoHost databases).

Time devoted to topic and research question formation, including development of good search strategies.

NATIVE HISTORIES AND ENDURANCEIN THE MIDWEST

SPRING 2014 COURSE IN AMERICAN INDIAN AND NATIVE STUDIES

This course explores Indigenous histories in the Great Lakes region—including Canada—with an emphasis on how these histories bear on the present and future. A key concept is survivance, which Anishinaabe writ-er Gerald Vizenor defines as a combination of survival and endurance. In contrast to absence or powerless-ness, survivance affirms Indigenous presence and agency in past and present. Examining colonization and decolonization as ongoing processes—as opposed to historic events—this course emphasizes concepts such as sovereignty, self-determination, and environmental justice within the context of enduring and evolving relationships to land and place.

Activities include a mix of lectures, discussions, film screenings, and a collaborative mapping project. Read-ings are drawn from a variety of fields, including Indigenous studies, history, cultural geography, American Studies, anthropology, and performance studies. Course requirements include weekly reading responses, participation in discussions, one short paper, and a historic profile for the mapping project.

CLAS Annual Scholarship Competition

The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences annual Scholarship Competition has begun. For 2014-2015 academic year, the College plans to award over 110 new scholarships collectively worth over $393,000.

To be eligible for most CLAS scholarships, students must:

• have a strong academic record • be enrolled in a College of Liberal Arts & Sciences degree-granting program and seeking

their first undergraduate degree; and • continue as an undergraduate in 2014-2015.

Note that some scholarships involve both merit and financial need criteria, some specify Iowa residence, some specify full-time student status, and some specify class status. The specific criteria for each scholarship can easily be accessed via the College's web site.

Most scholarships offered through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences require two (2) letters of recommendation. One of these letters must be from a faculty member. Once you complete the application, the references you have listed will receive an email explaining the submission process. Recommendation letters will not be accepted until the scholarship application has been successfully submitted online.

Application forms are available now online and are due February 3, 2014. Letters of recommendation are due by 5:00 pm Monday, February 10, 2014.

Questions may be addressed to the Office of Academic Programs & Student Development at [email protected] or (319) 335-2633.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Fellows Project│UIHP Scholarships & Fellowships│2014-2015
Purposeful engagement with extraordinary challenge requires us to know ourselves as well as we know our disciplines. The Fellows Project was established to not only identify and reward the most thoughtful, curious and motivated Honors students early on in their education, but to create a space where each Fellow is challenged to develop a knowledge of the self that will deepen their intellectual life, strengthen their engagement with their academic community and foster authenticity and confidence in their personal and professional relationships. Each spring semester, eligible students are invited to apply to be a part of the Fellows Project. The application process involves a written application, faculty recommendation and for the approximately 20 to 25 first and second year students selected as finalists, an in-depth interview with a panel of Honors at Iowa faculty and staff. Applications are due Monday, February 17, 2014. More information at http://www.scribd.com/doc/195297523/The-Fellows-Project-Opportunity-File-Updated-December-20-2014.
Service Learning Opportunity in Rural China – No Language Experience Required!
The Summer Service Learning Program (SSLP) brings Chinese and international undergraduates together to combat poverty issues in rural China by spreading access to high-quality educational and training resources. This unique and enriching opportunity allows students to develop and implement a service learning project in rural China. Projects include teaching English, doing poverty alleviation research, giving lectures on cultural communications, and visiting local villages.
Participants attend an orientation program at Tsinghua University in Beijing to meet their Chinese partners, learn about China's poverty alleviation issues, and develop plans to implement their service projects. Projects commonly involve teaching English in local schools or computer training. Participants then travel in teams to sites in rural areas throughout China where they reside for two weeks. Transportation is organized and paid for by Tsinghua University. Each group consists of approximately two or three international students, five Tsinghua students, and a faculty advisor. All Chinese participants speak English, and knowledge of Chinese is not a requirement for US student participation.
Note: This program is not offered for credit—no transcripts are provided.
Applications are due April 1, 2014. More information is available at the program website: http://www.isep.org/students/Programs/tsu/. You may also watch videos about the program at http://www.wangfoundation.net/video.htm. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
