ICFRC Lecture Luncheon

"Indigenous Struggles: A Sámi Perspective" Kelsey Frisk, UI Undergraduate Student, International Studies Stanley Award Recipient Thursday, February 12, 2015, 12:00-1:15 pm Congregational Church – 30 N. Clinton St., Iowa City, IA 52245 Register here, or contact (319) 335-0351 or [email protected] The reindeer-herding Sámi people of northern Norway, Sweden, and Finland are the only indigenous population to be recognized and protected in Scandinavia. Collectively herding around two thousand reindeer, the Sámi people have nomadically inhabited Fenno-Scandinavia for over 10,000 years. However, the combined forces of climate change, technology, increased industrial activity, and land-loss have led to a large shift in the traditional Sámi diet, lifestyle, and mental health status. Kelsey will discuss the impacts of these changes on the bodily and psychosocial health of Finno-Ugric Sámi and ways in which these changes may shape their future. Kelsey Frisk is a fourth-year undergraduate Honors student with the Interdepartmental Studies major. She studies global health with a strong interest in the health and human rights of indigenous populations. She recently received a Stanley Award for International Research to study perceptions of health among the Sámi people in northern Sweden from January-July 2014.

Doctors Without Borders Webcast

It’s the largest migration corridor in the world, a passageway through which some 300,000

Central Americans enter Mexico every year, many of whom try to continue onwards to the

US. Journeying by boat, on foot, and on a notorious train called The Beast, they cover

thousands of miles, and along the way, many find the same thing they are fleeing: violence

that can leave them injured or traumatized. But because of their legal status, they cannot

access basic health care to help them recover while on the move. For this reason, Doctors

Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has established a series of clinics that

offer medical and mental health care at key points along the route.

Join us for an in-depth discussion on the health consequences of Central American

migration through Mexico, and a look at the humanitarian needs of the migrants who

undertake the journey. MSF experts from our programs in Honduras and Mexico will share

their insights into the difficult and dangerous circumstances that migrants endure as they

try to find safe passage.

Panelists include:

Marc Bosch Bonacasa is the head of mission for MSF's projects in Mexico.

Maria Cristobal is the mental health referent for MSF's mission in Mexico.

Maggie Wideau, RN, spent nine months as project coordinator in Tegucigalpa,

Honduras, where she oversaw a program that provided medical and psychological

support for victims of violence and the city's homeless population.

Sandra Murillo, moderator, is the medical communications officer for MSF-USA.
