Dominican Republic

Santiago La Esquina

Program Summary The Dominican Republic: Health, Nutrition and Environmental Issues program is a cultural immersion program that provides undergraduate students with an opportunity to study a broad range of health and nutrition-related topics through interdisciplinary, field-based studies, as well as an immersive environment in which to improve their Spanish language skills.

Student can choose to participate in the summer session, fall session, or both.

Dominican RepublicThe Dominican Republic is a Spanish-speaking Caribbean country comprising the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, where Columbus settled on his first voyage to the Americas. With cultural influences of Native American, European, and African origins, it is a country of contrasts and diversity. Rugged mountains, lush valleys, beautiful coastlines, and bustling towns and cities are all part of its varied geography.

The summer session takes place in two locations. During the first half of the program, participants live in Jarabacoa, a small city in the central mountains about 45 minutes from Santiago. The second half of the program takes place in La Esquina, a small rural community near the northern coast. Both sites offer unique opportunities for cultural immersion and research options.

The fall session takes place in Santiago, the second largest city in the Dominican Republic. Here, students have the opportunity to see the busier side of life in the DR, while still developing strong cultural connections and exploring a variety of research options. Short visits to rural sites are also a key component of the fall session.

Academic ProgramThe program includes educational excursions to sites relevant to the study of Dominican health, nutrition and environmental issues, Spanish language instruction, and a research project related to program themes under the guidance of the faculty director and program staff.

Through the summer session, students become familiar with public and environmental health issues in the Dominican Republic while learning to develop and implement a field-based research project through a thematic seminar (5 sh). Students also take a Spanish language course at the appropriate level (3 sh). Excursions may include visits to community health centers, a reforestation project, hospitals, and clinics.

During the fall session, students choose from a variety of intensive Spanish, health, social science, and elective courses at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM). Students can earn between 12 and 18 semester hours through this session.

AccommodationsStudents are housed with Spanish-speaking Dominican families and are provided with their own private bedroom. Most students are housed in lower-to-middle-income homes (by local standards). Households vary and students should be prepared to adapt.

CostUpdated program costs will be posted on the Study Abroad website when they are available in early spring.

Program DatesProgram dates vary from year to year. The summer session runs from mid-June through the first week of August, and the fall session runs from mid-August through mid-December. The exact dates for this year's program are posted on the Study Abroad website.

Financial Aid & ScholarshipsUniversity of Iowa students can apply their financial aid package to study abroad programs, and are eligible to apply for additional study abroad scholarships and grants. More information can be found on our funding website: http://international.uiowa.edu/study-abroad/funding
