Rockin’ Activity Sign-Up Sheet 19
¨ Sign up for December activities is on an unusual day in November, due to the Thanksgiving holiday. It will be on Tuesday, November 29th, beginning at 8:30 as always. Please note that there will be no Sit and Be Fit that morning.
¨ HOLIDAY CLOSURES ARE A BIT DIFFERENT THIS YEAR: The Center will be closed on Friday, December 23rd and Monday, December 26th for Christmas, along with Monday, January 2nd for the new year.
¨ This Rockin’ Seniors issue was sent to the publisher right at the time of the Craft Show, so look in the January issue for pictures/financials/results from our biggest event of the year.
¨ INCLEMENT WEATHER CLOSURES: Please make sure you read the notice on page 14 on how to check if we are closed during inclement weather.
I have been asked to write a piece for the “Living and Aging Well” column for the new year in the News-Press, and I believe some of you may have life experiences pertinent to this. I am writing about the opportunity seniors have to reinvent themselves, to have an “encore act” career, or to develop a new passion in their golden years. If you care to share your story along these lines, please contact me soon. My article is due before the middle of December. Thank you. - Deb Santy [email protected] 720-733-2291
ttoorr I am writing this the day after our Craft Show. While we aren’t including the results of the event in this issue, as it has to go to press, I must tell you now while it’s all fresh in my mind, that I am so proud to be associated with a group of people who so willingly give and give some more to make this event such an incredible day. I can’t even begin to express how I feel about each one of you. Thank you all for a job well done, and look for a recap of the show in our January issue.
In the meantime, I want to wish you all the happiest of holiday seasons this year. Having my daughters off to college this fall has really made me realize how precious it is to have family and friends around all the time, and how different it is when those you love are not with you. I’m lucky they are just a short drive or phone call away, as I know that isn’t the case for many others. As we approach the holidays, remember to reach out in any way you can to people you know who may be lonely. Let them know you care and invite them to join you to go somewhere or just to chat. You might never know how much that small gesture means. We’ve got so many great activities planned for December at the Center, so please come on down and let’s have some holiday cheer together. I love this time of year and want to share it with all of you.
As the year comes to a close, and we all take stock of what is important to us, I want to take a moment to publicly thank our staff team. I am honored to work with these wonderful and passionate ladies who make coming to work a joy. I know I speak for them when I say that we feel privileged to work for you, and I can’t thank them enough for all they do each and every day.

December Volunteer: Mike Rutkowski V
olu
nte
er o
f th
e M
onth
When riders in our transportation program get into a vehicle with volunteer driver, Mike
Rutkowski behind the wheel, they are in extra good hands. You see, Mike retired after 27 years
as a first responder with the fire department in Westerville, OH, outside of Columbus. While we
obviously hope he never has to use the skills he honed over those years in dealing with emergen-
cies, it is our honor that he has chosen to spend his time volunteering as a driver with the Senior
Center. He’s now been driving with the Center for a few years, coming here after hearing about
what a rewarding experience it was to drive seniors from his neighbor, Rich Smoski, who also
drives. When any of us talk about the Senior Center with others, we never know what the
outcome of that conversation may be.
Mike grew up in the Detroit area, living very near Lake St. Clair, and he says he knew how to
drive boats before cars. He spent as much time as he could fishing, water skiing and just out on
the lake. He served our country in the United States Air Force from 1966-1970 as a jet engine
mechanic, stationed throughout Europe. He obtained a degree in engineering from the University
of Cincinnati. His 27 years as a first responder in Westerville were very rewarding, and he moved up the ranks in management.
He retired as acting fire chief.
Mike met his wife, Vickie, when he was a paramedic, as she worked in the emergency room at the local hospital. They’ve
now been married 38 years, with one child and two teenage grandsons who live in Philadelphia. The Rutkowski’s moved to
Colorado in 1999 for Vickie’s work and were only going to stay three years, but they are still here. He believes they will
probably move east at some point to be closer to their family members and lifelong friends.
Mike and Vickie like to travel, often going to visit the grandkids, and they enjoy going to Europe. Mike still loves boating.
He misses his sailboat on Lake Erie, but belongs to the Rocky Mountain Antique Classics, a boat club. He said he especially
likes Grand Lake. He’s restored a classic Chris Craft boat. He used to restore old Honda motorcycles. He also worked for a
number of years here for a custom home builder.
While Mike is a man of many experiences and talents, what draws people to him is the warmth and caring spirit he projects
to everyone who rides in his car, as well as to each of the staff and others at the Senior Center. He is a truly kind person and
such a pleasure to be around. Keep him in mind every time you have the opportunity to have a conversation with someone you
know who may just become the next Mike Rutkowski at our Center. Thanks, Mike, for all you do, and congratulations on being
named our Volunteer of the Month.

As a parent, I have often heard the saying that "it takes a village". This is usually referring to efforts and influences of family, friends and neighbors to raise a child. However, we know the efforts of others come into play throughout our lives. I believe we have a village to be thankful for in the volunteer hours that professionals, companies and organizations have provided to make the following Wellness Programs successful in 2016. And I'm also thankful for our Senior Center staff and volunteers for setting up and coordinating (and chopping and scooping for Lunch and Learn) to make sure all the events go off without a hitch.

Remember us on Colorado Gives Day
Tuesday, Dec. 6 Online at ColoradoGives.org
December 6th is a day when Colora-doans give sacrificially to their favorite non-profits. It’s “Colorado Gives Day” and our fourth year where people can give tax-deductible online donations to
our Center, and help us receive a portion of the $1 Million Incentive which is divided among the non-profits. We ask you to please encourage family
members to give on your behalf.
Purchase Castle Rock’s MotoSpa car wash gift certificates for $10 each (a $15 value) at the Center. Use them yourself or give as gifts to get cars washed at MotoSpa, at 865 Barranca Drive in Castle Rock. They are one-time-use cards. The Center receives a donation of $5
back from MotoSpa. What a great deal for everyone! The cards don’t expire - and everyone needs to wash their cars when it snows - so buy a bunch of them.
Thanks to YOU, we not only met our goal, but came in
second place
Thanks to all of you, we did it! We not only surpassed the 100 tickets sold mark, which got us into the “pot” for a higher donation, but we were
the second place ticket sellers with 155 tickets sold. Our total made from the event was $8058. A special thank you to Bonnie Dews and
New Hope Presbyterian Church for their major participation.
$5,423 was donated during the “Loving Life in the Second Half” matching challenge, and our thrilled anonymous donor gave $5,000, for a total of $10,423 raised. Thanks to everyone
who gave from the heart.

After lunch, you’ll be entertained with your favorite holiday songs by “The New Chords,” a Denver-based choir .
Carlos Miguel’s Fundraiser Wednesday, December 7 11:00 AM-9:00 PM Sometimes you just need a break from holiday foods to enjoy
some good old fashioned Mexican fare. Please consider going to Carlos Miguel’s for a meal and making some money for the Center on December 7th. Take the flyer on page 6, pick one up at the Center or print from our website, and go eat there anytime on this day. Order whatever you want, give your server the flyer when you pay for your meal, and a portion of your bill will be donated here.
IREA SENIOR HOLIDAY LUNCHEON - at the Events Center Wednesday, December 14 11:30 AM No Charge This is an incredibly popular outing for seniors during the holidays, and so generous of IREA. It is, however, limited to the first 300 who sign up, so make sure you call the front desk and get your name on the list until it is filled. Names will be checked at the door. Doors don’t open until 11:30 AM.
SPECIAL HOLIDAY OUT TO LUNCHES AT THE BROADMOOR Pick One - each leaving at 10:30 AM $9 ($15 non-members) Monday, December 19th OR Wednesday, December 21st We will be eating in the stunning garden room of La Taverne at the Broadmoor, which will be decked out for Christmas. Because we are limited to 20 people a trip, we have planned 2 trips, but only sign up for 1 of them. After lunch, we will give you about an hour to stroll the grounds, looking at the decorations, and will not be returning until about 3:00 PM; those who ride in our transportation program will need to find an alternate way to get home. Activity Fee does not include the cost of your individual lunch.
OUT TO DINNER — “Texas Roadhouse” in Parker Thursday, December 29 4:45 PM $5 ($11 non-members) Go ahead and be a kid at Texas Roadhouse - eat all the peanuts you want and just drop the shells on the floor. Plus, your server will bring you a basket of homemade rolls with the best sweetened butter you’ll ever taste. All this is before you eat dinner, but that’s why they make doggie bags! For dinner, you’ll have trouble picking from the steaks, smoked meats and barbeque, along with fish and a variety of sandwiches. Suffice it to say that you won’t go home hungry when you join us at Texas Roadhouse. Activity Fee does not include the cost of your individual dinner.

WEATHER CLOSURE INFORMATION
We occasionally close the Center to keep everyone
safe and off icy and snowy roads, not always
following the school closures. Sometimes we may
delay our opening.
There are 4 ways to check to see whether we are closed or opening late: 1) Call the Center and listen to the message -
if there is no special message, we are open; 2) Watch 9NEWS, CBS4 and Fox 31 - our information will be
scrolled across the bottom of the screen; 3) Check the homepage on our website as we will post it - you must
actually go into the website, not just look below the map if you Google it; 4) Like us on Facebook and you will
receive notices. We try to have these announcements in place by 7:00 AM, although please understand that
occasionally we have technology issues. Also, in the event of a delayed opening, please check our phone message
before coming to the Center, just in case we have to close. Thank you for understanding as we make decisions
regarding your safety.
