THE KATIE OSBORNE L'ILAC GARDEN

at the Royal Botanical Gardens

Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

About 1 km east from the Katie Osborne LilacCollection, where Old Guelph Road underpasses Highway403, was the location of the Royal Botanical Gardens'first lilac collection. In the fall of 1960 andspring of 1961, the collection (approximately 100different lilacs) was moved to its present locationin the Arboretum, which was cleared from existingwoods. Apart from occasional levelling for the grasspath, the existing ground contours are those of theoriginal natural landscape. In 1965, the collectioncaught the interest of a Gardens' friend whose sub-sequent generosity resulted in a greatly expandedgarden. In the Katie Osborne Lilac Collection, atpresent are displayed 637 different kinds of lilacs, which makes it the largest such collection in Canadaand second largest in the world. It stands in memoryof one who was fond of lilacs and had a special interestin the Royal Botanical Gardens.

Different exposures within the 'Lilac Del1l areused to grow specific groups of lilacs such as: Singleor double French hybrids, Prestoniae hybrids, earlyflowering hybrids, species, etc. Though the lilacsare sun-loving plants, occasional trees from theoriginal forest were left as an aesthetic contributionto the rolling grounds thus creating a pleasantenvironment throughout the year.

Growing Lilacs

In general a good time to plant lilacs is inthe autumn from the time leaves colour to freeze-upand in the spring from the time ground is frost-freeuntil bud break. Planting early in November is

preferred to late November or early December, butthe 'second half of April has given us the best results.

Lilacs prefer open sunny location, neutral orslightly alkaline soil, with good drainage. Theywill thrive even in soils of low nutrient value.Fertilization of lilacs if grown in good soil isnot normally necessary but if used it should be highin phosphate such as 0-20-0; 4-12-8, etc. The besttime for application of fertilizer on lilacs in ourclimatic region is mid..,.May.If only availableplanting location is of heavy clay, or poorlydrained soil, then plant lilac on mounds.

Flower buds for one year's bloom are formed inJune, July and August of the previous year. It isgood practice to cut off all the old bloom so thatthe nutrition is diverted from unwanted seed productionto flower bud formation for next year. Usually yearswith good vegetative growth are followed by a poorflowe~ show the following year and alternate bloom inlilac i$ quite common.

Oystershell scale and lilac borer are two of themost common lilac pests in this climatic region.Since the borers attack lilac stems and"branches oneipch in diameter and larger, it is good practice togrow multi-stem lilacs (6-8 stems per bush), andperiodically remove older stems as the younger stemstake over. Oystershell scales are sucking insects attachedto the bark of the younger wood. These insect pestsmay be chemically controlled.

Pruning and thinning of lilacs is done in ourcollection during the mont~ of June, at the same timethe old bloom is cut off. Lilacs in our collectionare deliberately kept at 6-9 ft. height where theirbloom may be more appreciated. Rejuvenation of lialcsE?,houldbe done during winter months.

, A PAIR OF LILAC NOVELTTESFROM FALCONSKEAPE

by Robert B. Clark, Meredith, NH

The 1984 spring in the northeastern States wasgradual, that is, no unseasonable hot spells tostimulate lilac buds into early bloom. Instead, temperatures hovered in the 40s and 50s Fahrenheitwith many overcast days and plenteous rains (indeed,we drove through flooded highways enroute thethirteenth annual meeting at Burlington). Theblooming season was delayed in some localities bya week to ten days or more.' In northeastern Ohio, moreover, one week before bloom, when flower clusterswere already set to elongate and leaf shoots aswell, an overnight frost struck, causing wilting totender shoots and subsequent bacterial blight. Bycontrast, in New England a "January thaw" came inFebruary for ten days or so. The resulting temperaturedrop killed flower buds on many (not all) Forsythias,Fortune's rhododendron, florists' hydrangea, Kerriaand similar tender exotics. Furthermore, peer brouseoccurred on certain choice lilacs 2-3 feet tall, aswell as hobblebush viburnum, mountain laurel and ofcours~ yew. Each spring is different. That's whatmakes gardening so challenging.

This year I was able to visit several lilacgardens. After driving all Sunday afternoon, May20th, in the rain I reached Grape Hill Farm, Clyde,NY to see the Utley two-acre collection. Bill hadmowed the grass and I was able to admire and sniffthe fresh lilacs. Lemoine's early hybrid 'Vauban',a fragrant double bluish lilac, was the only fullyopened lilac. Bill's oldest plants, about seventeenyears, are now above one's head in height, but hehas been far-sighted to allow space enough betweenplants so that you can walk without being brushed

by the foliage. He is constantly making improvements, and we shall be looking forward to our Society'ssecond visit in 1988, the year of Highland Park'scentennial.

At Middleburg, NY I visited the late JudgeWalter Bliss's extensive lilac collection above thetown and overlooking the Schoharie valley in a lightextolled by Washington Irving describing the mysteryof Catskill scenery. It was evening and the sky wasclearing after showers. The view was to the 'porth.Clifflikehills closed in the valley and its villageand farms. Lilacs are seen to best advantage insubdued light. Featured prominently was Maarse's'Primrose' at a distance across a mowed lawn amid someone-hundred Lemoine French hybird lilacs, among them'Katherine Havemeyer', "BeLf.e de Nancy', 'Montaigne I

and 'President Grevy'.The Holden Arboretum at Mentor, OH has a large

collection of lilacs in extensive plantations notyet open to the public. There I saw the pink formof 'Lucie Baltet' (the coppery colouredform wasseen at Clyde a couple of days earlier). The temperaturewas in the 80s F. and lilac petals were unfoldingrapidly.

By far the most extensive and interesting lilaccollection today is that at Falconskeape, theexperimental garden of Fr. Fiala at Medina, OH(visited by ILS in 1980). Here literally are thousandsof lilacs of various pedigree, multibred and/orcolchicirie~treated seedlings, some of which havereceived cultivar names.

In moist seasons blue lilacs are much bluer.Since this spring has been one of the wettestsprings in memory, I shouldn't have been so surprisedand delighted to see Fr. Fiala's 'Wedgewood Blue'which, in my humble opinion, is now to be reckonedthe standard blue lilac. Blue is one of the coolcolours which disappears in twilight. Not "WedgewoodBlue" seen across a spacious lawn in dim light ofovercast skies. This cultivar is another in the

'Rochester' series raised by Fr. Fiala and itscolour has substance, that is, it doesn't fade.

The second of Fr. Fiala's recent originationsis a pink quadrobred (hybrid with four pedigreedparents): 'Rochester' seedling X 'Edward J. Gardner'X 'Rochester' X 'Lucie Baltet'. The flower clusteris long and erect, like its parent 'Rochester'.Expanding buds are like pink pearls. Expanded floretsare huge double pink rosettes. It's name? Fr.Fiala honors me by naming this superb lilac 'ProfessorR.B. Clark'. At the Burlington meeting OrvilleStewart (whom we were delighted to see along withhis better half Ellen) who was asking around forpersonal single choices was amazed when I withouthesitation nominated this Fiala origination, knowingfull well that it takes ten years to test novelties, and forsaking my hitherto favorite 'Leo~ Gambetta'.

Owing to rain while passing by Rochester, Idid not avail myself the pleasure of visitingHighland Park's Lilactime festival; however I'mtold that Kolesnikov's 'Congo' seedling 'ZnamyaLenina' this season is deep red, crimson, rubywhichever description best fits its glowing colour.

Question:

When we move lilac$( often we find PeriodicCicada Nymphs among the roots. I would guess thatthis may be a unique problem. Generally busheswhere there is a large concentration have smallleaves and would not be described as liVery Healthy".Any solutions? I have started trying PROXOLinjected to 18 inches (the depth we find most of it).

PREVENTING BACTERIA AND FUNGUS TN LTLACS

Most damage caused by bacteria and fungus canbe prevented by proper location and by burningdiseased wood and fallen leaves. Mildew is commonbut harmless. Bacterial blight causes' black spotson the leaves and young shoots during cold, wetweather in May and June. A less common funguscauses brown leaf spots; the young shoots die backand there may be an infection of the root and crown.

Botrytis, the common gray mould, usually appearsafter injury from frost, chilling, etc. For all theabove, spraying .or dusting with one of the neworganic fungicides should be done as soon as leavesopen, and diseased twigs should be removed andburned.
