Her work has been seen in opera houses in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Luxembourg including Theater Basel, Theater Bremen, Opera Graz, the Philharmonie Luxembourg, the National Theater of Mannheim, the State Theaters of Lübeck, Saarbrücken and Kassel, as well as in the USA. She received her classical ballet education from Ballet Arts Minnesota and the Milwaukee Ballet before completing a Bachelor of Arts in contemporary dance at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. She danced in Minneapolis and New York City for Emily Johnson/Catalyst, Pam Tanowitz, Gerald Casel, Alexandra Beller, Shapiro & Smith, Scott Rink and Johannes Wieland. In 2007, she moved with Johannes Wieland’s company from New York to the State Theater in Kassel, Germany. She was a member of the dance ensemble from 2007- 2012. During that time she began to choreograph. Since 2013 Lillian Stillwell has worked as a freelance choreographer with a primary interest in interdisciplinary productions. She has choreographed operas, plays, musicals, dance, and children’s theater. Her first musical, EVITA (2013) with Swiss director Tom Ryser, was widely celebrated and marked the beginning of a continued close collaboration with Ryser. Their work includes MASS by Leonard Bernstein with a cast of over 150 dancers, singers, actors and children; JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, for which their work was nominated for Best Direction and Best Choreography, respectively, by Musicals Magazine; and the new David Bowie Musical LAZARUS, about which Bild Magazine wrote: “Ovations like this haven’t been heard for years at Theater Bremen.” Lillian Stillwell’s recent work includes an interdisciplinary version of THE SLEEPING BEAUTY at the Philharmonie Luxembourg, IL TROUBADOUR at the Opera Graz, and Choreolab Basel, where was an invited guest choreographer. In the upcoming season she will return to Luxembourg to create SILBERLICHT, a dance evening for young children featuring the Baroque Ensemble Diederot and will choreograph LA TRAVIATA at the State Theater in Saarbrücken, Germany.
