We know what we once were: we were Norwegians, farmers and fishermen. We lived God-fearing lives in the country hewn from the rock by our ances-tors. To every man an ox, or a fishing boat, or a pickaxe. To every woman a child. That, at least, is the story. We know too what we are now: we are the richest people on the planet, and the happiest. We lead lives once unimagina-ble, bought by riches that have come to us through honest hard work. To every family their car, and their boat, and their cabin by the fjord. We no longer fear God, but by God, we know how to spend. We bring peace to nations far away, and we make the bullets used to protect that peace. That, now, is our story. And still our country is changing, faster than ever: it’s explosive, exhilarat-ing, terrifying. Do we know what we will become? Ever more peaceful? Ever more prosperous? Ever more inclusive? Will we meet every threat with more democracy, and more openness? And who are we really talking about when we say we?

Daniel Rønning Stokkan was born on 11th April 1986, the year of the Cher-nobyl disaster and the assassination of Olof Palme. When he died on 13th June 2013, nothing was found in his pockets except a receipt for the blue rope with which he hanged himself. Running throughout this book is an image collection by Cecilia Riis Kjeldsen, a close friend of Daniel’s, made with the cooperation of Daniel’s family. Riis Kjeldsen’s images investigate the suicide of her friend, and the links between gender and mental health. Why, she wanted to know, do twice as many men as women succeed in killing themselves? Do men struggle to ask for help? Could professional intervention have saved her friend? Daniel told staff in his open psychiatric ward that he wanted to die. He received a piece of paper with an emergency number on it, and was told he could call at any time. On 11th June he called the number several times. No one answered the phone. His parents brought him back to the hospital, only to be told their son was not a suicide risk. Two days later, Daniel took his own life.

POST-RETOUCH-DELETEAMALIE JOHANNESEN

THE FOREIGN WORKING CLASS OF NORWAYKRISTIAN GRØNDAHL

This is a short conceptual film about generation ”post-retouch-delete” – a generation where social media gives us the opportunity to create a second version of ourself, and how this can affect our lives in a positive way and negative way.

This is a project about how good we are to accept the diversity in Norway. Are there attitudes towards a certain group of people, and is it possible to see each human individual, instead of the stereotypes?

CONFIRMATIONVILDE BORSE

This project is about how conformity leaves us alone in a crowd, and how the massive economical growth has left us crippled in social setting.

I AM MESIGMUND EVENSEN
