Limen, from the Latin, means threshold. In a physiological and psychological sense, limen is the boundary of perception, a threshold through which one passes from the vicious disease of addiction to the health and vibrancy of sobriety in recovery. Limen House is that doorway, that threshold, for so many in our community as they take their first steps on the journey to sober living.

Since our founding in 1969, our mission has been to provide a safe, supportive and structured environment in a holistic approach to help people recover from the disease of addiction and return to their families and communities, sober and living with purpose. Today, as opioid addiction and substance use disorder reach epidemic levels and claim countless lives in Delaware and across the nation, that mission has never been more vital to restoring and strengthening the health, well-being and social fabric of our community.

Among our achievements in 2017, Limen House continued to expand our ability to serve by opening a new transitional residence program for women, to support them in their return to sober living in the community. We laid the groundwork for new programs to educate and empower families to support their loved ones on their journey to recovery. We set new records for fundraising and participation in special events that enable us to continue saving lives and restoring families. And we joined our social services partners in reaching out to the community to raise awareness, educate and advocate for sober living and recovery from addiction. As a model sober living community, Limen House is a vital social services partner and an integral part of Delaware’s work to address the public health crisis of the addiction epidemic.

This year was also one of transition within Limen House. In his first year as Executive Director, Mike Duffy brought new perspective and vision to leading Limen House in serving the community. And Board President Sally Prendergast, whose strong leadership and passion guided Limen House to new heights of success in fundraising and programmatic growth, passed the baton into the fine and capable hands of Vice President and President-Elect Susie Hudson. We welcome you to read more about Susie within these pages.

We are grateful to our many generous donors, partners and friends for your continued support. Because of you, Limen House proudly serves as a threshold to hope and healing. We invite you to continue with us on our journey in 2018.

As the disease of addiction continues to threaten the social fabric of the community of Delaware, Susie Hudson, Vice President of the Limen House board of directors, prepares to take the helm as President in 2018 with a clear vision for the organization’s unique role in addressing what many are calling a public health crisis.

“If we want our community to be strong and continue to grow, we must heal people in a comprehensive way, not just their addiction,” Hudson said. Referring to Limen House’s holistic approach to treatment and sober living, she continued, “We address the addiction, but there’s also the spiritual side, the legal side, the citizenship side, it’s all those things. Our wrap-around approach differentiates us.

“Moving forward, we will remain true to that core and continue to focus on strengthening our financial stability so we can grow our programs in ways that make the most sense to serve our community.”

A Human Resources Business Partner at CSC in Wilmington, a longtime corporate sponsor of Limen House, Hudson was introduced to the organization in 2014 when a colleague invited her to the annual business breakfast. Inspired by the stories she heard from Limen House residents, she got involved.

“These individuals communicated such courage in overcoming their addiction,” she said. “I remember thinking, if something like that happened to me, would I be that resilient? Would I have the courage to keep moving forward?”

With her expertise in human resources, Hudson developed a series of employment focused workshops for Limen House residents, covering topics such as resume writing and tips for job interviews. She was soon invited to join the board of directors, and became vice president in 2016. Her leadership contributions have helped shape an effective organizational structure and sound HR policies and procedures that will help ensure Limen House’s ability to serve the community for years to come.

Hudson attributes Limen House’s success to the interplay of an exceptionally talented staff with an engaged board of directors, each bringing diverse expertise and skill sets to advance the mission and create the holistic model of care that elevates Limen House as a leader in recovery from addiction. The board – whose members have expertise in key areas such as the law, finance and addiction medicine – provide the guidance and stability to support the forward-thinking vision of Executive Director Mike Duffy and his team in recognizing that addiction is a community issue, not simply an individual one.

For example, Board member and Program Committee Chair Cynthia Mooney, who holds a master’s degree in pastoral counseling, in 2017 introduced the successful Days of Hope program that aims to heal a person’s spirit as well as the physical body from the disease of addiction. And, at the end of the year, Mooney and other Limen House staff were deep in planning for a new family orientation program, the kind of “smart growth” that Hudson plans to focus resources on in 2018.

Through its holistic model Limen House “gets an individual in a good place and we slowly integrate them back out into society to be productive citizens but they face the same external world with the same pressures,” Hudson said. “You have new perspective and new skills for coping but if your family, your support network hasn’t changed, it’s going to be a challenge. The world can be a tough place.”

The new family orientation program addresses these issues, teaching family members how to recognize and play their own roles in supporting their loved ones in recovery.

Looking ahead, Hudson’s priority as board chair is to continue to build and strengthen the organization’s infrastructure and financial stability that allows for strategic growth in addressing Delaware’s opioid epidemic.

“We must stay true to our core and, at the same time, we must progress while accounting for a changing external world,” Hudson said. “We transform communities through transforming the lives of our residents and their families.”

SPOTLIGHT ON SUPPORTMichael D. Loessner

Mike Loessner first became aware of Limen House when he entered recovery eight years ago. Meeting residents, hearing their stories, he knew right away he wanted to be part of this unique organization that saves lives from addiction and restores our community.

“Many, in their early days at Limen looked beaten, hollow and lifeless,” Loessner said. “To watch someone like that become a smiling, productive member of society, back with family, employable, and with a future, I knew Limen House was doing something special.”

Inspired by the mission, the co-owner of DSM Commercial Construction Services joined the LimenHouse board of directors. As chair of the Property Committee, he oversaw renovations of the two women’s houses which enabled Limen House to double its capacity to serve women in recovery. Through his volunteer leadership and generous philanthropic support, the Greenville resident has helped make the Limen House model the gold standard for sober living facilities in Delaware.

As the opioid epidemic rips through communities across Delaware destroying lives, there is an ever-increasing need for residential beds and effective recovery programs. A vital social services partner in addressing the addiction crisis, Limen House relies heavily on the continued generosity of donors and charitable organizations.

“Limen House is a wonderful organization, a safe place to help people who are not capable of helping themselves, giving them an individualized treatment plan, a place to live, and a path to recovery and self-sufficiency,” Loessner said. “Anyone with compassion for the downtrodden should help.

“Limen House saves lives.”

MY NAME ISTim Brainard

My Name is Tim Brainard and I am a sober, active alumnus of Limen House. On March 6, I celebrated three years of continuous sobriety.

I picked up my first drink at age 9 and have struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction my whole life. My ultimate decline was like that of many others in Delaware: I found prescription opioids, which led to a heroin addiction that depleted me of everything that mattered in my life. I lost four jobs, lost my family, became homeless and had trouble with the law. I made unsuccessful attempts at getting sober through rehab. Finally, I walked into detox weighing 130 pounds, with a trash bag holding all I had left in the world over my shoulder. I was bankrupt physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

I went from detox to Gateway Foundation, and then to Limen House where I stayed just over eight months. The minute I walked into the doors of Limen House I felt a sense of ease and comfort, as I was welcomed by staff, residents, and alumni. I have been through other treatment programs and detox, but my Limen House experience is truly one of a kind. The individualized treatment and education of the disease concept, and the staff of counselors who guided me through were unparalleled. Limen House gave me the time to begin to heal and just become a better human being.

The only real difficulty I faced was when it came time to re-enter the world with my newfound sobriety, getting back to work and into the stream of life again. I was guided through by the staff, with support from the growing network of sober friends I now had in my corner. My counselor suggested I move to Limen House Level II sober living so I could approach this new way of life in a pragmatic way and put into practice what I had learned. I stayed with the Level II house for over seven months.

On March 6, I celebrated three years of continuous sobriety. My family relationships have healed and been restored. My employment as a peer specialist with Connections Community Support Program allows me to work with other people who are like me, and offer hope to them as Limen House offered to me. I am fully independent, living in my own apartment in Wilmington near Limen House, and have a car that is titled and insured in my name. This may seem a small deal to other people, but for a guy like me who walked into detox with nothing, these accomplishments are all small miracles.

I continually visit Limen house to attend alumni meetings, have dinner with the residents, and to keep in contact with all the counselors. I also visit to offer hope to the residents, as the alumni did for me during my stay.

Once the spirit of Limen House entered my heart and soul, I knew it was there to stay. This is why I donate financially and volunteer at Limen House and its events. My heart is full because of what LimenHouse has done for me, and I truly want other people to be afforded the same opportunity.

There are many signs in and around Limen House, but I have to saythat my favorite sign sits out front. It says, “Sometimes the wrongchoices bring us to the right places.” How very true this is of my Limen house experience.
