LIMITATION OF UNEP SOCIAL LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT GUIDELINES IN INFORMAL PROCESSES. BASED ON A CASESTUDY OF INFORMAL RECYCLING OF ELECTRONIC WASTE IN PAKISTAN. Shakila Umair, Elisabeth Ekener-Petersen, Anna Bjorklund Social Life Cycle Assessment is a tool that aims to assess the potential positive and negative social and socioeconomic impacts of products along their life cycle. The presence of informal processes in the life cycle poses a particular challenge, as they are more difficult to assess due to lack of knowledge and/or lack of data. However, the exclusion of informal processes from the assessment may give an incorrect picture of the most important social impacts in the value chain. Informal processes in value chains are most likely to occur in the outer ends of the value chain, i e in raw material extraction and waste handling, as they are normally in the outskirts of the producers sphere of influence. These phases are in many cases situated in developing countries, with weak legislation and insufficient enforcement of the law, in turn increasing the likelihood of negative social impacts. In this paper we evaluate the usefulness and applicability of the UNEP SETAC Guidelines when assessing informal processes, using a previously conducted case study of informal recycling of e-waste in Pakistan as our case. The result shows some limitations of the UNEP/SETAC guidelines in the case of informal processes, as they are not designed to address the specific attributes of informal processes when it comes to type of actors, categorization of stakeholders and relevant social issues. We have proposed some amendments and additions to the Guideline to address these limitations.
