The Mphephu royal family continues to be under siege and in the past month, yet an- other “contender” for the throne has stepped forward and asked the courts to decide on the matter. Hardly six months after President Jacob Zuma made the announcement that Toni Mphephu Ra- mabulana will be the new king of the Vhavenda, Elius Ndanduleni Mphephu is challenging the decision. He claims that he is the rightful king “as the first-born son of the late Patrick Mphephu”. According to his legal representative, Khathu Sikhala of Beukes-Sikhala Attorneys, Ndanduleni (57) has filed an application in the Thohoyandou High Court, asking for an intervention. Sikhala said the application, if granted, will be heard together with that of Masindi Clementine Mphephu, which was filed at the end of last year at the same court. Masindi is the only daughter of the late Tshimangadzo Mphephu (who ruled under the name Dimbanyika). The legal team of the 21-year-old woman argues that she would have been the first incum- bent for the title but is being discriminated against because of her gender. Elius Ndanduleni is also complaining about the alleged bullying tactics being used against him. He says he submitted a letter to the Mphephu royal family on 23 January. In this letter, he re- quests a meeting to discuss the kingship position, which he believes belongs to him. On the same day, Siloam police allegedly visited Ndanduleni at his home at Dzanani Ha- Tshikota, where he was warned that he must not come anywhere near Vho-Makhadzi Vho-Phophi Mphephu, the sister of the late Patrick Mphephu- Ramabulana. He was accused of threatening her. A day later, on the 24th, Ndanduleni was instructed to report to the Siloam police station where he was subsequently arrested and charged with assault because he had allegedly threatened Vho-Makhadzi. After being detained for six hours, he was released on R1 000 bail. He had to appear in the Dzanani Magistrate’s Court the next day, where the case was withdrawn. Siloam police spokesperson Warrant Officer Edward Tharaga confirmed Ndanduleni’s arrest and the subsequent withdrawal of the case. Khathu Sikhala, who is also the son of Ndandu- leni, said his client had decided to take the legal route in challenging the throne after he had tried all other available avenues. “When the late Dimbanyika Mphephu was put onto the throne in the 90s, my client was expect- ing that he would be the one to be sworn in. He was surprised when Toni Mphephu Ramabulana was sworn in while he was still waiting,” said Sikhala. Ndanduleni and Masindi are not the first people to challenge for the position occupied by King Toni. The royal families of Tshidziwelele, Mp- haphuli and Tshivhase failed in their challenge at the same court late last year. In his response, Jackson Mafunzwaini, who is the spokesperson for the Mphephu Royal family, laughed off the matter and said: “Ndanduleni is wasting his time and money by going to court.” “Ndanduleni should go to the commission and submit his story, so that the commission can take a decision based on the facts. The issue of traditional leadership cannot be resolved by the court. The commission is the only institution that can make a decision,” said Mafunzwaini. Mr Johann Hammann Sr of Hammann Moosa Attorneys reacted om behalf of Masindi Mphephu and said they have received no documents yet. He said even if Ndanduleni was the eldest son of the late Patrick Mphephu, it does not necessar- ily mean he has any claim to the title. The late Dimbanyika Mphephu was the heir because of him being born from the house chosen to produce a heir by the royal family structures. The Mphephu royal family continues to be under siege and in the past month, yet an-other “contender” for the throne has stepped forward and asked the courts to decide on the matter.

Hardly six months after President Jacob Zuma made the announcement that Toni Mphephu Ra-mabulana will be the new king of the Vhavenda, Elius Ndanduleni Mphephu is challenging the decision. He claims that he is the rightful king “as the fi rst-born son of the late Patrick Mphephu”.

According to his legal representative, Khathu Sikhala of Beukes-Sikhala

which was fi led at the end

of last year at

the same court. Masindi is the only daughter of the late

The legal team of the 21-year-old woman argues that she would have been the fi rst incum-bent for the title but is being discriminated against because of her gender.

Crocodile scare at Siloam village

Two friends robbed at gunpoint

Mutale officials call off their strike

A crocodile that had brought terror to the community of Siloam in the Nzhelele was hunted down and put down after many hours of search-ing.

The crocodile, measuring nearly two metres, caused a scare in the community after being spotted by passersby in a small pond not far from the Siloam Hospital. The incident happened on Friday morning.

News of a crocodile in the middle of a village spread like wildfire and local villagers and others from the surrounding villages swarmed to the area in no time.

Many in the community believe that the presence of the crocodile was as a result of the recent floods in Vhembe, forc-ing wild animals to relocate inland where the water levels were lower. When the waters subsided, some of those animals could not make it back to their own locality .

Only last week, a lion was spotted close to villages in the Nzhelele area. Two weeks ago, more than 15000 crocodiles were washed away from their enclosure at Rakwena Croco-dile farm on the South Africa-Botswana border in Limpopo. Some of those have not been accounted for so far although

many have been recaptured. The Siloam crocodile was

spotted by a woman with three of her friends who had come from withdrawing money from an ATM at the gate of the hos-pital. They came face to face with the crocodile, which was basking in the sun.

Word of the crocodile spread like wildfire. Within a short space of time, the area was swarming with curious on-lookers who wanted to have a glimpse of the dreaded creature. Some vowed that they would not go home until it was found and killed.

“At first we thought it was a car bumper, but we were shocked when the bumper started moving away into the water, and that was when we realized it was a crocodile. I have never been so scared. We rushed to a car wash that is not far from the pond, shouting that there was a crocodile.”

People from the car wash came in their numbers but the crocodile had disappeared into the water.

“We summoned the police who, together with conser-vationists, organized that the water be pumped out of the pond,” said Violet Tharini of Dopeni-Tshipise Ha Matsha-rini. Nature conservation of-

ficials and the police struggled the whole day to drain the water from the pond.

The crocodile was only found late in the evening and it put up a fight, which forced officials to put it down.

“We are relieved that the evil creature has been killed and taken away by the police. Evil people could take its brain, which is regarded as very poi-sonous, and kill or harm people in the village. Now that it is gone, our children will be safe, but we are concerned that it might have not been alone and there might be others in the vi-cinity,” said Mashudu Mudau, a local resident. Meanwhile, the police at Siloam have sent a warning to communities in the Nzhelele area not to venture into pools of water, even if it is just rain water.

“Many crocodiles have washed away from rivers, and from information we are gather-ing, there are many crocodiles out there which might be a danger to the community. Wwe spent the whole day looking for the crocodile, and when we found it, it put up a fierce struggle, so that we were forced to put it down as it had become a danger to the community,” said W/O Edzisani Tharaga of the Siloam police.

The SAPS at Musina have opened a case of armed rob-bery, which allegedly took place on the morning of 28 January.

According to the police, it is alleged that Munyaradzi Ka-basa (39) and Denias Matau (29) were walking along the street when three males and a female approached them. Before they could say anything, a Toyota Quantum minibus came to a stop next to them.

The police added that one of the four suspects pointed a firearm at them, while the oth-

ers forcefully dragged the two victims into the vehicle.

According to the spokesperson for the Musina police, Lt Peter Mudau, the four suspects then drove off to a small stream where they searched the victims. They took at least R5 000 and US$15 from Kabasa. They also left with R6 000 and US$40 000, which belonged to Matau.

“We need the community to assist us with information which may lead to the arrest of the suspects in this case,” said Lt Mudau.

Mudau announced on Tuesday

that two suspects had been arrest-ed in connection with the case.

He said the police were also investigating an incident on 1 February, when a 42-year-old woman was allegedly raped while on her way from church at around 02:00.

The victim apparently saw two men walking along the street close to her. One of the two men came and forcefully pulled her into the nearby bushes at knife point. The suspect then raped her. “The suspect has not yet been arrested, but we hope to make a breakthrough soon,” said Mudau.

The strike of nearly 150 munic-ipal workers at Mutale, which lasted for almost two weeks, ended peacefully last Monday when members of the union and the municipality signed an agreement to pay cash bonuses for workers.

Services such as waste re-moval, cleaning, paying for

municipal services and testing for drivers’ licenses were temporar-ily stopped during the strike. “We are happy that we will receive what we were fighting for. We are ready to go back to work and deliver better services to our communities, because the management has understood our demands,” said the secretary of

the South African Municipal Workers Union in Mutale, Mr Tsumbedzo Sumbana.

The mayor of the Mutale lo-cal municipality, Cllr Josephine Mukwevho, confirmed that the strike had ended. She urged communities in Mutale to come to the municipality and pay for services.

This group of gogos from different denominations in the Matangari/Matombotswuka area outside Thohoyandou reckon prayer is the best way to motivate each other. The group of seven meets every morning and prays for 30 minutes. They started meeting in 1985 and they pray for different things on different days of the week. Last month, the gogos held a suprise party for one of their members, Martha Nemakonde (57). The party was held at the house of gogo Elisa Tshisevhe. During the occassion, Nemakonde was showered with presents and a cake was shared among members in recognition of the good work she is doing for the group.

A member of the community opens a canal to help speed up the draining of water from the pond. Here he works under the watchful eye of a policeman, armed with a rifle. The crocodile was finally found in the evening.

The two-metre-long crocodile that was scaring communities in the Siloam area is taken away in a bakkie.

While some of the mourners fainted, some wailed uncontrol-lably as the coffins containing the bodies of a father and his two children were simultane-ously lowered into the earth at Musina graveyard on Sat-urday.

This was during the emotional funeral service of Hendrick (31), Thapelo (2) and Thabo (1) Ma-lithuba, who were swept away by the recent floods, when the car in which they were travelling plunged off a destroyed bridge on the Pontdrift road outside Musina. Hundreds of mourners from all corners of Limpopo, mainly members of the St Enge-nas ZCC, had to put everything aside to join family members in order to bid their final goodbye to the three deceased.

Family representative Mbud-zeni Mabasa said: “Death has robbed us of a father, a brother,

a pathfinder and a strong man who always worked hard to feed his family. Our hearts bleed for the innocent little kids, but there is nothing we can do except to accept it as it is. We would like to thank Musina Municipal-ity, businesspeople and all the community members who have been on our side since this trag-edy struck. We wouldn’t have achieved all this if it was not for their support. We also know that there are those who have been encouraging us with prayers for the past two weeks.”

Mayor Carol Phiri said it was unfortunate that the three Malithuba family members had to die such a cruel death. “As a caring municipality, we have done our best to make sure that the deceased are buried in a dig-nified way. We would also like to thank everyone involved in assisting the family at this time

of need. We only have to put our trust in God because He is the only one who knows why it hap-pened like this. As a municipal-ity, our wealth is the people, but we feel somehow uncomfortable when we lose our community members in disastrous situations like this one. May the souls of the deceased rest in peace.”

While the undertakers were lowering the coffins to the ground, Pastor Philemon Marera of the St Engenas ZCC said that they had come to share the great loss with the family. “We don’t come today with any answers why it happened like this. It might be difficult to believe, but the Bible says that it’s actually good for us to be here today. It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of every person; the living should take this to heart.”

The water supply situation in Beit Bridge town has now greatly improved, after en-gineers from the local water utility, Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA), had repaired the water treat-ment pump which had been submerged in water after the recent floods.

The town was without water for five days last week until normal service was restored on Friday.

The water treatment plant, which is located near the Lim-popo River, was submerged last Monday, resulting in back-up generators’ also being submerged and, in the process, affecting the electrical systems. Local resi-dents had to resort to using water from 33 boreholes, which were drilled at various strategic points in the border town at the height

of the cholera outbreak in 2008.An official from ZINWA, Mr

Tommy Rosen, said it had taken them four days to address the situation at the treatment plant. “We had to drain the water from the treatment pump and re-assemble the machines before restoring services,” he said.

Beit Bridge Town Secretary Dr Sipho Singo had earlier on in the week indicated that the town would go for some time without water. The town needs at least 15 000 m3 of water per day, al-though the local authority is able to supply only a third of the daily requirement. The border town has 4 000 houses and is home to more than 40 000 people, and thousands of travellers pass through every day. The floods have also affected construction work on the new treatment pump.

Singo said the floods had also

left a trail of destruction on the water and sewer reticulation systems. He said four points had been damaged on the main sewer line, adding that they had since repaired three points. He said the bus terminus and several link roads had also been damaged ex-tensively, though the engineering department had started working on them.

“As council, we are doing everything necessary to avoid the outbreak of water-borne diseases such as cholera,” said Singo. He said the ongoing World Bank-funded US$2.65 million emergency water supply and sanitation programme was near completion. “The massive project, which was launched in March 2011, is mainly aimed at rehabilitating the existing water and sewerage infrastructure in the border town.”

Family want answers after woman’s deathA 34-year-old resident of Ramantsha, Ms Mainganya Ratshibaya, passed away last Tuesday, allegedly of food poisoning.

According to her mother, Ms Elisa Rat-shibaya, she received a call from her daughter’s neighbours late on Monday night, informing her that her daughter was ill.

“When I arrived there, I found my daughter in bed. She was very weak and sick.” She said that her daughter’s tongue had turned blue when she arrived at the house.

She said that the way her daughter had died affected the whole family. “What puzzles us is that her tongue had turned blue. We need answers. I am saddened and in a state of shock. I do not have any idea as to what could have happened,” she said.

Mr Peter Mulaudzi, husband of the deceased, said that he was still extremely shocked. “We are not pointing fingers at anybody now but hope that a post mortem will shed light on the reason of her death.”

Mainganya will be buried on Saturday at the Madombidzha cemetery. The service will start at 06:00 at Ramantsha.

“We did our 50/50 interview!” said Marco Marcos (left) and Casper-John Venter, the two save-the-rhino campaigners of Ridgeway Independent School in Makhado (Louis Trichardt). The broadcast will be on 18 February at 19:30 on SABC2. Here they are with a painting donated to the school by the Endangered Wildlife Trust.

The two young save-the-rhino activists from Makhado (Louis Trichardt), Marco Marcos and Casper-John Venter, will later this month feature in the popu-lar conservation programme 50/50 on SABC 2.

“We did our 50/50 interview!” said the two, both students of the Ridgeway Independent School. The broadcast will be on 18 February at 19:30.

“It was nice but kind of scary with the gigantic cameras. We were interviewed by Maurice Carpede,” said Marco (11). The interview took place on 28 January.

Casper-John (also 11-years-old) said that having entered the stu-dio, they first did a warm up. One of the questions was how much money they had raised.

“I answered that we had raised between R7 000 and R8 000 so far. Then they said they had a surprise for us. I thought they would donate something to us, but it was really a big surprise...” Casper-John said. Into the studio came Rico, the rhino-horn sniffer dog that they support and their school’s mascot. They were overjoyed.

“Rico has sniffed R33

million worth of rhino horn, ele-phant tusks and skin. He is going to live in with the owner of the company and will not be staying with the other sniffer dogs in the kennels,” said Marco, very proud of their champion dog.

“We also have a Facebook page Rhino Peace SA. Our in-terview is probably the best thing that has happened to our project so far,” said Casper-John.

The footage for the insert of the 50/50 interview that will be aired, had already been shot in December last year when 50/50 presenter Faye Peters, producer

Susan Puren and their photog-rapher travelled to Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

Casper-John and Marco en-visaged a couple of possible projects for this year.

There may be a Rock for Rhino event with a superstar invited and they may have a stall at the CANSA Relay for Life. Ridgeway’s Cycle Race will donate some of the proceeds to their save-the-rhino project.

“We will have the annual Run for Rhino event and then Rico will probably come to visit,” said the boys.

Cllr Abraham du Plooy (Ward 21) says the DA has urged the South African Human Rights Commission to investigate the continuous water crisis in the Makhado Municipality.

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho

Human Rights Commission to investigate Makhado Municipality’s water crisisThe Democratic Alliance (DA) in Makhado has urged the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) to in-vestigate the continuing water crisis in the Makhado Munici-pality.

This follows after residents of Makhado have been without a stable supply of water for nearly seven years, says the DA's caucus leader, Cllr Abraham du Plooy. “The DA also submitted a memorandum of demands to the municipality in October last year, but nothing has happened,” Cllr

Du Plooy states. He explains that the demands

were based on the principle that the municipality must deliver basic services, such as water, proper sewerage infrastructure and roads, to the communities. “We have approached the Human Rights Commission to officially lay a charge in accordance with the Bill of Rights,” Du Plooy says. The SAHRC's spokesper-son, Mr Isaac Mangena, con-firmed that the commission had received the complaint from the Democratic Alliance. “The mat-

ter has now been registered with us and is undergoing our internal screening process,” Mangena said. “We should be allocating an investigator as soon as we satisfy ourselves that it falls within the mandate of the SAHRC.”

However, the scarcity of tap water in Makhado continues to be a thorn in the flesh of the affected residents. “It's been two weeks now that we haven't had even a drop of water,” says an elderly resident, Ms Hannetjie Joubert of Erasmus Street. “Even the municipal water trucks are not

bringing us any water. I feel frustrated with the whole thing.”

The Soutpansberg Chamber of Commerce argues that the lack of water is causing serious damage to the business sector. “Over the past few weeks, business was affected in more than one way by the lack of water supply,” says the Soutpansberg Chamber of Commerce's presi-dent, Lize Strauss. She adds that in the hospital-ity sector, guest houses and restaurants were affected most. “A new restaurant in town had to install three water tanks and the capital outlay was close to R 20 000,” she tells. “Fuel station clients could not make use of the rest rooms, because of no running water, and business was lost.”

Trust members, guests and drivers of the tractors, with the new tractors which will be of use on all the farms.

The Tshakhuma Trust chairperson, Chief Tshifovhedze Madzivhandila, feels what it is like to drive a tractor. Looking on are Chief Shonisani Mulangaphuma and Tshakhuma Community Farming Manager Mr Henly Wolff.

By Elmon Tshikhudo

Tshakhuma farms on the way to recoveryThe government's land resti-tution programme has been described in some circles as a failure. Many of the farms which were given back to claimants are now bare and many factors, which include no prior training for recipi-ents, have been named as having contributed to this situation.

One community, the Tshakhu-ma community, which inherited Tshakhuma Community Farms, is on its way to recovery. Only last year, the community, which owns more than 20 farms in the Levubu area, had to lay off 100 employees because of a lack of funds. They recently received

a R11 million loan, which has set them on their way to suc-cess, with possible increased production that will see their misfortunes turned around.

In the beginning of this year, the Tshakhuma Trust showed its intention to empower the community when it handed over more than 100 chairs to Tshiemuemu Secondary School in Tshakhuma. This week, they purchased six tractors to the value of nearly R2 million.

The tractors were shown to the community during a ceremony held at the trust's offices in Levubu. The project manager, Mr Henly Wolff, said the tractors would go a long way

in improving production on the farms. "Yes, when we took over most of the farms were almost barren, and we are glad that this is poised to change for the better with the money we have. We had old tractors, which cost us a lot to maintain, and when we received the loan, we thought the first thing to purchase would be tractors, which will keep us going,” he added.

“We now have seven new tractors which will supplement the old fleet, which is in good condition. We hope the im-provement in production will make us realise our dream of re-employing the workers we laid off because of the lack of

funds,” he said.The trust's chair-

person, Chief Tshifo-vhedze Madzivhan-dila, was over the moon. “We are elated that this day has fi-nally arrived. We have been trying our luck for a long time, but we finally succeeded. We are going to cre-ate more jobs for our people and this will be a plough-back to the community. After all, Tshakhuma Farms is about the community and all should benefit,” he said.

The Vhavenda King, Khosikhulu Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, will officially launch the Vhembe Dis-trict Marula Festival next Saturday (16/2) as part of celebrating the fruit, which is described as part of the local culture and heritage.

The occasion is termed U luma Mukumbi/Ku luma Nguva and the ceremony is the build-up towards the Limpopo Provincial Marula Festival at Phalaborwa at the beginning of next month.

According to the spokesperson of

the Vhembe District Municipality, Mr Moss Shibambu, the marula fruit is rich in nutrients and also serves as an excellent base for fruit products such as soft drinks, nectars, teas, brandies, wines, and punches; it is also used in beauty products. Local communities have used the fruit for generations to cure and prevent illnesses such as scurvy and also to perform various traditional rituals.

Shibambu added that various cul-tural dance groups would entertain guests during the festival.

Accident survivor David Sematla during the funeral service of the three Malithuba family members at Musina.

He stood still as the body of his bo-som friend was slowly lowered into the grave. It is a story of survival that defies belief. Amid the horror accident and the three people who had perished, David Sematla is one of the people who miraculously survived.

Now, exactly three weeks after the disaster, he has spoken for the first time about the experience.

Sematla was among the mourners who came to pay their last respects to the father and three children who were recently swept away by the floods near Musina. He was one of

“I miraculously survived”

the three people who survived the accident. The accident remains one of the deadliest dur-ing the recent floods that hit Limpopo.

During the funeral, it was clear from his face that he could not understand how he had survived. “Even when I see these three cof-fins going down into the graves, I feel like I’m living in a dream. I cannot believe that I am one of the survivors and that all these things are happening. It will take several years for me to forget that my bosom friend and his two kids are gone forever.”

Semat la says a l -though he had received some counselling, it was very hard to forget what had happened. “I never go a day without think-ing about the horrible

accident. It’s hard not to think about it. When I look in the mirror, I have scars that no one can see. It is all in my mind.”

Yet while the pain from his minor injuries has faded over time, a small scar on his hand reminds him of a tragedy that he thinks about every day. He says the scar helps to remind him of his lucky escape. “I under-stand that I have lost my dear friend and his kids, but I will never forget this ordeal for the rest of my life. Although they are dead and being buried here today, I console myself by the fact that their spirits still live on.”

In a celebratory mood, pupils, Mopane Intermediate's principal and teachers celebrate after the school was named the top school in the circuit.

Celebrating Mopane’s successes are, from left to right, Musina Chief Whip Cllr Simon Madamalala, Soutpansberg North Circuit Manager Dr Nelson Phaswana, Mopane Principal Ms Tshilidzi Mabirimisa, Dean Alunamutwe Rannditsheni, head of the Devhula Lebowa Circuit of the Lutheran Church, Dr Nkhelebeni Phaswana of Kalahari Publishers, who sponsored R10 000 for the event, and top farmer Dr Ntuseni Nesane.

Top honours for Mopane during awards ceremonyMopane Intermediate School, a school situated about 40 km from Musina, has proved that good things are not only found in towns and cities, but even remote communities can achieve a lot.

The school achieved a 100% pass rate in the 2011 Grade 12 examinations and continues to do well and outshine others in the Soutpansberg North Circuit. The school was once again voted the best school in the 2012 Grade 12 examina-

tions. They were the toast of the community

when the circuit celebrated its achieve-ments during a function held at Eric Louw High School. The annual func-tion, which saw educators, academics, businesspeople and Grade 12 pupils from all schools in the circuit and other invited guests gather to celebrate excellence, was held on Friday. All the recipients of the awards were not present as they are attending tertiary institutions.

Well-known businessman and aca-demic Dr Nkhelebeni Phaswana of Kalahari Publishers donated R5 000 to the circuit and another R5 000 to the best school in the circuit. The circuit manager, Dr Nelson Phaswana, said it had become a tradition in the circuit to celebrate excellence. "This initiative has had positive spinoffs since we started; we have seen a tremendous improvement in terms of quality results in the circuit. Last year, we attained 83,1% and we are now

in position 3 out of 27 circuits; we are mov-ing up the ladder. At the speed we are now travelling, it would not be surprising if we were at the top spot this year,” said Phaswana.

He said the awards motivated educators, pupils and SGBs and also encouraged pa-rental involvement in the education of the children. "We also provide guidance on different careers and that is why we invited Dr Ntuseni Nesane to come and encourage pupils to take agri-culture as a career,” he said.

After receiving the cash and trophy for being the best school, Ms Tshilidzi Mabir-imisa, principal of Mopane Intermediate, shared the secrets of their success. "We work as a team and we instil discipline in all pupils. We also have extra classes after school and in the evening. We have weekend classes and this has worked to our advantage," she said.

Fun fest at Blyde

Jail time for robbers

The annual Blyde Xfest will be hosted at Blyde Adventure Camp from 1 March to 3 March.

This year, there will be mountain bike races for children and adults, as well as kayak races for pad-dlers. For the rest there will be croc-and-tube races on the Lower Blyde River at the camp. This activity is loads of fun and suitable for anyone. It entails a race with a partner in a tube and then in a croc raft down the two largest rapids of the Lower Blyde River. The first 20 entries for the croc-and-tube races will receive an official Blyde Xfest 2013 T-shirt. All these events take place on Saturday. Entry forms can be downloaded from www.blydeadventurecamp.com or phone Ronel on 079 388 2196 or write to [email protected].

The Hlanganani Regional Court sentenced three men to jail on charges of robbery last Wednesday (30 January). The case relates to an incident at Nthabalala Primary School on the night of 9 April 2011.

The court imposed a jail term of effectively ten years each on Mupo Mashaba (29) and Liberty Sithole (35). The court was merciful towards Cyril Fumani Sithole (21), who told the court that he was still a pupil and he was sentenced to six years’ im-prisonment. Adv Mokete Rakgokgo, for the State, said Cyril Sithole was a greedy pupil who showed no respect for school property which was meant to better other pupils’ lives. “You stole from the school which ought to provide you with an educa-tion,” Adv Rakgokgo said.

It was heard in court that the accused had entered the school yard through the hole which they had cut in the fence. They then went straight to the guard-room and stabbed the elderly security guard three times with a knife in the back, ribs and buttock. He bled profusely and lost consciousness. Then they covered him with a blanket before proceeding to the classrooms, where they stole school property.

Government asked to intervene in “spread of foreign inyangas”The Makhado Municipality interacted with communities of Ward16 during a public-participation imbizo at the Shalom Christian Church in Waterval last Friday.

The purpose of the imbizo was to listen to people’s concerns about issues of service de-livery in order to find a way of addressing them adequately, said municipal mayor Cllr David Mutavhatsindi.

During the event, different stakeholders from the community, including representatives of the youth, home-based care groups, the elderly, com-munity policing forum, Sanco, traditional healers and business forums, voiced their concerns and addressed their needs.

The chairperson of the Waterval branch of the Traditional Healers Association, Ms Linah Rambau, requested the “government” to inter-vene in the spread of foreign, illegal inyangas or sangomas who distribute “dangerous” advertorial pamphlets. “These people claim to terminate pregnancies at affordable prices and people easily fall prey to these false healers,” Rambau said. “Women continue to die in the hands of these false healers, as a result of botched abortions. A real healer will never kill anybody. The problem is these false healers mar our good names as traditional healers.”

Rambau further called upon the municipal to start treating traditional healers with the same respect and eagerness which they give medical doctors and teachers.

Sanco pleaded with the municipality to consid-er naming the streets in Waterval township. On this aspect, the mayor advised Sanco to consult with all relevant stakeholders in the community and then the process might be finalised with the municipality’s assistance.

Youth representative Madume Munyai re-quested the municipality to at least assist in completing the local stadium, which had previ-ously been vandalised twice each time it was

completed. “The stadium walls were made of zinc sheets and thieves took advantage of the situation and stole the zinc sheets,” Munyai said. He further pointed out the need of municipality-supported job creation projects within the location.

Mutavhatsindi promised to address the issue of the sports ground with immediate effect, and further advised the youth to form co-operatives and other youth development projects. “If you can visit a LIBSA office (Limpopo Business Support Agency) at our offices, you might definitely get all the relevant information on how to launch yourselves as the youth,” he said. “As the municipality, we are trying to fix a number of roads after the recent rains,” Cllr Mutavhatsindi said.

Residents also complained about councillors who do not give feedback each time they have attended an integrated development plan (IDP) meeting. “Any interested community member should feel free to attend IDP meeting to see how the budget has been split for different projects within our municipality,” he said. “However, this does not preclude councillors from giving the com-munity feedback about a meeting.”

The chairperson of the Waterval branch of the Traditional Healers Association, Ms Linah Rambau, says the municipality should deal with illegal abortionists.

Community members attended the imbizo in large numbers.

International speaker Dr Maswole Ragimana of The Living Gospel World Mission dedicated a flower nursery belonging to Ms Thizwilondi Muthaphuli and musical instruments belonging to her son Khathu on Sunday. The service was held at the Makwarela Anglican Church. Ragimana urged all to use their God-given talents to make an honest living. Muthaphuli said the blessings she had been receiving were such that she could not neglect thanking God. “When my husband died, I nearly lost focus, but God helped me and provided me with the skills to make a living for my family. He blessed everything we did here and the nursery is testimony to that.” Holding the fresh flowers are, from left to right, Reverend Samuel Muofhe of the Christian Covenant Church at Khalavha, Ms Fredah Ramathikhithi, host Thizwilondi Muthaphuli and Dr Maswole Ragimana.

Community members participate in council meeting

The 31-year-old Brighton Chauke, who was one of the Soutpansberg’s most wanted criminals for almost a year, appeared in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court again on Monday.

He has been charged with several violent crimes in the area after his daring escape from police custody in Musina in October 2010. At the time of his escape, Chauke was awaiting trial in a murder case in Musina, together with his brother, Shorty Chauke. Shorty (42) has since been sentenced to 45 years’ imprisonment.

After almost a year on the run, Chauke was rearrested on 7 August 2011 by members of the Waterval SAPS. Since his re-arrest, he has been positively connected to a spate of violent armed robberies, housebreakings and attempted murders.

During Monday’s appearance, Chauke appeared on the three charges that his brother had been convicted of. These charges relate to three rob-beries in April 2009 at three different businesses in Makhado (Louis Trichardt). Of these, one was caught on security camera.

In the meantime, an additional nine charges have been brought against Chauke. They include seven counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, one count of murder and one count of housebreak-ing with the intent to steal. He will stand trial on these charges in the Thohoyandou High Court, together with his co-accused, Victor Ndlovu (40) and Douglas Ndou (28).

On Monday, Chauke’s case was postponed until 22 April. He will remain in custody until then.

Mayor Carol Phiri says it is always important to engage stakeholders and individual community members in the running of the municipality.

As part of participatory democracy, members of the public were invited to form part of this year’s first council meeting of the Musina Mu-nicipality, which took place at last Thursday.

Mayor Carol Phiri says although the council is the highest decision-making body in the municipal-ity, it is always important to engage stakeholders and individual community members in the running of the municipality. “We strive for a democracy in which all citizens have the right to express their views and are able toparticipate directly in the decisions that affect their lives.”

Phiri says it is important to empower the local communities through access to all the relevant information required for any decision, to enable all to participate in the smooth running of the mu-nicipality. “We are moving towards building grass-roots institutions that enable decisions to be made directly at the appropriate level by those affected, based on systems which encourage civic vitality, voluntary action and community responsibility. It is also our obligation that all elected representatives be committed to the principles of transparency, truthfulness, and accountability in governance.”

The draft annual report of the 2011/12 was pre-sented during the meeting. The draft report gives a sense of how the municipality performed its functions during the financial year. The mid-year report, which measures progress during the current 2012/2013 financial year, was also presented.

A report about the recent flood disaster in the Musina municipal area was tabled before the council. It was also noted that, despite the lack of resources, the municipality is doing its best to make sure that the aftermath of the situation is addressed. Council also passed condolences to the family of three victims who had passed away as a result of the floods. A report about the mayoral back-to-school campaign was also tabled and acknowledged by the council.

It was also announced that the days of long queues for buying electricity at the municipal offices are now history as the municipality has

established several vending points, both in Musina town and Nancefield.

All businesspeople have been urged to register their businesses with the municipality, in line with the regulations.

A report on the desktop investigation and as-sessment of all houses owned by the Department of Public Works in the Musina municipal area was also tabled before the council. The next step will be for the council to conduct an inspection of each of the 147 identified properties to establish if they are occupied legally.

High-flying students hold their awards. With them in the photo is Univen´s principal, Prof Peter Mbati, and the Univen students president, Mr Mushavhi Mathelemusa.

By Elmon Tshikhudo

Incentives for hardworking Univen studentsTwenty-six students at the University of Venda who performed extremely well were on cloud nine when they received cash prizes totalling a whopping R230 000 from the university’s principal, Prof Peter Mbati.

This was during the official opening of the 2013 academic year on Thursday. The opening also coincided with the first-ever Vice-Chancellor’s Student Academic Excellence Awards. The function was held at the university’s auditorium.

The awards are an initiative of the 2011 Univen Student Senate and Senate Teaching and Learning Committee, which proposed to Senate that annual

academic excellence awards should be instituted for under-graduate students at all levels.

It is intended to promote a culture of teaching and learning in the schools through competi-tion for the awards. Twenty percent of the award is in cash, with the remainder in tuition fees, book vouchers and accom-modation, depending on the stu-dent’s choice. During the event, Mbati outlined the programme of action for 2013, particularly highlighting the infrastructure upgrading programme. He also highlighted some developments and improvements with regard to academic projects.

Mbati said the awards would instil a sense of competitive-

ness amongst students from all levels. “We have awards during graduation ceremonies, but not all have the opportunity to at-tend them. We would like to see junior students attend similar ceremonies. This will also go a long way in improving the qual-ity of graduandi we produce and will also promote excellence amongst students and members of staff,” added Mbati.

One of the rec ip ients , 21-year-old Jubilant Sibanda, a second-year BCom Business Economics student, who was the overall best student in the second level, hailed the award as a boost. “We are highly mo-tivated to perform well in the future,” she said.

Municipality launches re-surfacing projectThe Makhado Municipality launched two street-surfacing projects worth millions of rands a fortnight ago.

The first project was launched in Eltivillas Extension 1 and the estimated cost of completion is R11 million. A project consultant has been appointed to oversee the whole project. According to the consultant, Mr Ramsy Nekhalale of African Blue Eagle, a 1,6km stretch of road needs to be tarred. The project is expected to be fin-ished in 10 months. He explained that storm water drainage is at the core of the project as it will then make the road durable even in times of heavy rains.

Two local businessmen and residents of Eltivilas, Mr Deven-dra Patel and Mr Viju Premjee, questioned the duration of the

project. “Why should it take 10 months (to complete) only 1, 6km?” asked Mr Patel. “It doesn’t make any sense to me, especially in a machinery world of today. Ten months means more or extra money into the project, and who is going to pay that money? Of course, the local ratepayers.”

Municipal Mayor Cllr David Mutavhatsindi defended the decision to award the contract to the specific consultants and con-tractors. “We need to look at the history of our place and people,” he said. “Not all companies can afford the bigger machines, so we need to give them sufficient time to render quality service.”

The project contractor for Eltivillas Street Surfacing is Mposicon Construction, which

was represented at the launch by Mr Martin Mposi. He prom-ised to deliver quality work and slaughter two cows at the handing over of the completed project somewhere towards the end of the year.

The second street-surfacing project is in Tshikota and the cost is R8 million. Mont Consulting Engineers has been appointed as the consultant, while the contractor is Immorial Building Construction. The consultant, Mr Edward Muvhango, explained that the scope of the work in-cluded the upgrading of the gravel roads to the tarred main road, which will stretch for 1,6km and the work will include storm water drainage pipes. “The dura-tion of the project is six months,” he said.

Education

Outstanding results for SumbandilaThe Sumbandila Scholarship Trust, in part-nership with Ridgeway College in Makhado (Louis Trichardt), is a non-profit organisation which provides full scholarships to private schools, as well as Saturday and holiday schools, to rural children in the Vhembe District.

The Sumbandila Scholarship Trust was founded in 2007 by Leigh Bristow, who is now the executive director of the trust. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achieve-ment and outstanding potential. The process of selecting the first children for the full scholarship programme brought the Sumbandila Trust into contact with a group of learners who, although they were not selected, were nevertheless tal-ented, ambitious and capable of performing very well academically.

All of these learners attend rural secondary schools throughout the Vhembe district, and Sumbandila provides intensive academic support and mentorship in core areas.

Last year saw the first group of Sumbandila students sitting their matric exams. Their results were outstand-ing:

* Hulisani Nekha-vhambe (seven dis-t inc t ions : ma ths , science, life science, English, geography, life orientation and Venda);

* Yvonne Mulaudzi (five distinctions: maths, science, life science, geography and life orientation);

* Musundwa Mu-godi (four distinc-tions: maths, science, English, and life ori-entation);

* Thompho Ndou

(four distinctions: maths, science, English en Venda); and

* Tshilidzi Siavhe (three distinctions: maths, life science and life orientation).

Throughout the group there was a 95% bach-elor pass. Furthermore, eight of the Sumbandila students received bursaries.

They were Sandra Ramabulanyana (Sasol Inzalo Bursary to study engineering at Pretoria University), Rosymary Mudzanani (Investec Bursary to study financial economics at UCT), Mbavhalelo Ramovha (Thathuka Bursary to study accounting at UJ), Yvonne Mulaudzi (Moshal Scholarship Programme Bursary to study medicine at Wits), Hulisani Nekhavhambe (South African Actuarial Bursary set up by Cyril Ramaphosa to study actuarial science at Pretoria University), Thompho Ndou (Sasol Inzalo Bur-sary to study for a BSc at Wits), Azvihangwisi Davhana (Sasol Inzalo bursary to study metal-lurgical engineering at Wits) and Ronewa Nwan-amidwa (Department of Health Bursary to study BSC nursing at Pretoria University).

Lutendo Madume ap-pear ed in court for murder.

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho

Accused in court “Bring your evidence of ritual murder”The Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court was filled to capacity a fortnight ago, when Lutendo “Lufuno” Madome (25) appeared in connection with a charge of murder which took place at Tshikwarani village in the Ku-tama area.

Madome stands accused of allegedly murder-ing a 20-year-old female pupil, Tuwani Fhetani, on 9 January. He allegedly stabbed her to death at his home, while police officers hesitated to act outside the room. According to police’s preliminary investigations, Madome had ab-ducted Fhetani when she was on her way from Tshiungulela Secondary School, where she was doing Grade10. The deceased’s family attended the court as well as the traditional leaders from Tshikwarani. “When cases of this nature happen among us, our duty is to show moral support to the affected household and relatives,” said Mr Ludwik Mahuwa, a community leader attached to the Kutama Traditional Authority.

“We will be coming to court until the final day of this case.”

The case against Madome was postponed to 27 February for further investigation. He remains

in custody. Mean-while, the office of the provin cial com-missioner Lt Gen Simon Mpembe had since lashed out at the members of the SAPS who attended to the complaint. “As such, we have re sorted to take se-rious departmental steps against them and the process is underway,” said the police’s provincial spokesperson Brig H a n g w a n i M u -laudzi.

Vhothovhele Gole Mphaphuli (left), responding to challenges facing the community. This was during a mass meeting held at chief Tshishonga Netswinga´s palace.

One of Limpopo‘s senior tra-ditional leaders, Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli, who has 75 chiefs serving under him, has urged the boiling community of Tswinga outside Thohoy-andou to be united and to provide whatever information they might have in connection with the recent and mysterious death of a local man.

Mphaphuli addressed resi-dents during a visit to the area on Sunday. The visit took place at the local traditional leader’s royal palace and came against the backdrop of turmoil in the village that has left many people af-fected. The turmoil has emanated from the death of a local school boy, who was found hanging in some nearby bushes.

When Avhashoni Mbedzi (18), a Grade 11 pupil at Muvhavha Secondary School, was found, rumours started doing the rounds that he had been ritually mur-dered. Many who have allegedly been linked to the mysterious death of the local man have had their properties torched and cut off from services in the village.

The aftermath of the upheaval also left many in the community arrested.

Mphaphuli was well received by the community members, who expressed the hope that all their challenges would be ironed out, so that they continue with their lives in a peaceful way. Address-ing the residents, Mphaphuli said he had noted their concerns but had found two issues central to

the unhappiness in the area: that of the local traditional leader who is alleged to be selling sites in a corrupt manner and inefficient governance.

He said he summoned the chief and confronted him about the allegations, which he denied. “I have rebuked and cautioned him that if what I am hearing is true, he should stop it right away.”

He also touched on the burning issue of the killed boy which he said was troubling him as well. “I visited the police with a view to finding out what exactly was hap-pening with the case, and I was shown post-mortem results and

made to understand that nothing was missing when the boy was found. I now urge and challenge anyone of you who might have information about this death to come forward and assist the po-lice, so that the perpetrators can be brought to book,” he added.

After the address, many showed discontent and said there were many things which they had complained about which had not been addressed.

It was decided that a follow-up meeting would be held, where all stakeholders would be present who would attend to the resi-dents’ challenges.

A concerned community member makes a point during the meeting.

Meetings about meat inspection serviceThe Department of Agricul-ture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) recently started with a series of stakeholder consulta-tive meetings on the proposed meat inspection service.

According to a statement by DAFF, the meat inspection ser-vice by suitably qualified and

skilled staff in the red meat and poultry abattoirs “is considered to be one of the essential elements of ensuring that the meat sold to the public is safe and whole-some.”

Meetings have already been held at the Onderstepoort Veteri-nary Institute near Pretoria, in the

Eastern, Western and Northern Cape and Free State. The meeting for Limpopo will take place on Thursday (14/2) at the head office of the Department of Health and Social Development in Polok-wane. For more information on the meeting, phone Dr Pieter Loock at 082 877 2857.

Mine extends helping hand to victimsThe recent floods in the Lim-popo valley caused a few anxious moments for the employees and residents of Tshikondeni Mine.

The mine confirmed last week that they had received a record-breaking 416mm of rain-fall between 12 and 19 January.

“For the evening of 19 Janu-ary alone, 185mm was mea-sured,” said the spokesperson of the mine, Mrs Deadré Bekker.

No damage was reported in

the Tshikondeni mine village, but employees staying near the Mutale River experienced severe damage to their homes and belongings.

“In one case, a contractor’s house with all its contents was completely washed away,” said Bekker.

One farmer from the area reported that the water rose 15m above its normal level.

Prompted by the surrounding villages that were cut off from

the outside world, the mine’s manager, heads of departments and employees voluntarily as-sisted to distribute food parcels to the stranded residents. Vil-lages that were left without road access were Mutale, Mkom-awabani, Nkotswi and Bende Mutale.

The mine provided them with 500 food parcels. A special ef-fort was also made to help the family who lost their 13-year-old child during the floods.

Employees from the Tshikondeni mine visited the family who lost a child during the recent floods in the province. Help and assistance were given in the form of food and toiletries. Photo supplied.

More people drown in Mopani areaA flood victim was found in the Middle Letaba River outside Giyani a fortnight ago, after a three-day search by members of the community and the police.

Mr Brain Ntuli (21) of May-

ayeni village was swept away by water when he and a friend were fishing in the river.

The incident took place af-ter warnings by the provincial government and the police that people should refrain from going

to the rivers after heavy floods.Police spokesperson WO

Thomas Makhubele said the police had worked hard to find the body. “What made things worse was that the river was still flowing heavily underneath and

we managed to get him a kilometer away from where he drowned,” said Makhubele.

He also pleaded with the communities near big rivers to look after their children and not to play close to the water.

On Thursday, it was also announced that the bodies of two teenagers were found in the Melo-totsi River at Ndzumeri near Giyani.

Police divers search for the body of Mr Brain Ntuli in the Middle Letaba Dam.

Welfare

Amie Chhaya spreads his wingsMuch to the delight of the Mu-sina community, well-known Limpopo community builder Mr Amie Chhaya has spread his wings to Musina.

Commonly known as the Min-ister of Blankets, Chhaya was in Musina earlier this week to arrange with the municipality on how best he can assist in helping the poor with much-needed food parcels and blankets. Chhaya was also there to get firsthand information about the recent floods that left three people dead in Musina.

Chhaya was received by May-or Carol Phiri and Municipal Manager Johnson Matshivha in a round-table discussion to map

a way forward. A truck was im-mediately dispatched to pick up maize meal, cooking oil, marga-rine and bath soap, which will then be distributed to the poor during the course of next week.

Chhaya has committed to as-sisting the people of Musina until his last day on earth.

“Helping people is a way of life to me. I will continue to do that as long as I live. I know I have to help people as the nation’s economic crisis has deeply affected the lives of mil-lions of our people. Poverty and job layoffs have pulled the rug out from under many families, particularly those living in low-income communities. There is a

rising level of homelessness and food insecurity for many com-munity members, and children are particularly affected by these conditions,” says the 88-year-old community builder, who has re-ceived countless awards during his lifetime.

Mayor Carol Phiri said she was very thankful to have Chhaya coming in to help the people of Musina. “We know the poverty levels of our people. We also know their hardships and some of them even have to sleep on empty stomachs. We feel greatly humbled to be associated with people of his calibre and this will help to fulfil our dream of bring-ing a better life to our people.”

Mr Amie Chhaya (middle) shares a light moment with Mayor Carol Phiri (right) and Municipal Manager Johnson Matshivha during his visit to Musina on Tuesday.

The Tshilwavhusiku Regional Court sentenced a 26-year-old woman to fi ve years' imprison-ment for attempted murder.

The court heard that on 25 Au-gust last year a resident of Mae-bane village in the Kutama area, Nkateko Beauty Rihlampfu, was sitting outdoors with her sister and mother, when she told them that she felt tired and needed to rest in her room.

When her sister followed her into the house a few moments later, she found a stark naked Beauty wriggling on the fl oor. She then rushed out to call her mother. On their return, they found that Beauty had given

birth to a baby boy and was sit-ting hard on top of the new-born baby, shouting that she did not want him.

The mother and daughter tried to pull her off the child, but she violently kicked the baby against the wall. The baby, who was apparently still attached to the mother through the umbilical cord, lost consciousness. Police and emergency personnel were called and Beauty was arrested, charged and placed in police custody.

The accused was later released from custody but tried to make a run for it shortly afterwards and went to Gauteng. The Director

of Public Prosecution recom-mended that a warrant of arrest be issued against her. She was rearrested and the case was put on the court roll again.

The case against the accused was postponed many times for further investigations before the trial could resume. When she appeared in court on 24 January, she was sentenced to a direct jail term of fi ve years.

According to the information which emerged during the trial, the child is well and being taken good care of by his maternal grandmother, along with the oth-er three children of the accused.

Fear for increase in malaria casesThe Vhembe District Munici-pality is concerned about the high incidence of malaria in the area.

A spokesperson for the mu-nicipality, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, said the heavy rains that had fallen since the begining of the year "will surely have a nega-tive impact on the health of our people, especially in Mutale and the Musina local municipality."

Although no death has been reported so far, Ralushai says a higher number of malaria patients than usual has been admitted to

different hospitals around the district since the rain started. "Another challenge is that some of the families are now roofl ess since their houses collapsed be-cause of the fl oods. Some of the families are staying with their relatives, but there are those who are staying in tents we provided for them. Tents expose them to mosquitos, which makes them vulnerable and possible victims of malaria," says Ralushai.

His other concern is that most of the areas that are known to be at high risk for malaria, such

as Ha-Mutele in Mutale, areas towards the Kruger National Park and Pondrift, are isolated from other areas as their bridges have been washed away. "Because of the damaged roads and bridges in those areas, it is diffi cult for our ambulances reach patients," he added. "Our main worry is that the rain is still pouring, which makes it diffi cult to address the situation. We are promising our people that we will continue do-ing our best with the help from NGOs like the Red Cross and others, " said Ralushai.

The Makhado police made a surprising discovery when they were called to this accident scene early last Tuesday morning (29 Jasnuary). Inside the overturned double-cab bakkie they found a huge stash of illegal cigarettes. The driver of the bakkie was nowhere to be found. The accident happened at the Hendrik Verwoerd Tunnels on the N1-North. It is suspected that the driver was travelling towards Makhado (Louis Trichardt) when he lost control just before the fi rst tunnel. The bakkie crashed into the safety barrier on the opposite side of the road before overturning and skidding across the road, smashing into the other safety barrier. Several cartons of Remington Gold cigarettes were seized by the police. At the time of going to press, the police were trying to locate the owner of the bakkie. The bakkie had a Gauteng registration number.

Principals of the Soutpansberg East Circuit of education bade farewell to their circuit manager, Mr Peter Netshia, during an event held at the Emmanuel Christian School last Friday. The Vhembe District senior manager, Dr Gerson Rambiyana, praised Netshia for being a hard worker and a committed circuit manager. He indicated that Netshia’s contribution in the struggle for quality public education will always be remembered. He also mentioned that Netshia will be missed in the education family. Netshia said that he was leaving the department with a warm heart because he had played his part wholeheartedly. “I now hand over the spear to the young to take over.” He said he was humbled by the love shown by his colleagues. Soft-ball cricket

Musina residents repair town’s streets

For the first time in the history of Makhado (Louis Trichardt), a soft-ball cricket league will take place.

The league is being organised by the Eltivillas Cricket Club. Matches will also take place in the evenings at the field of Eltivillas School.

According to the president of the club, Yahya Jiwa, the league is being sponsored by Hyundai Louis Trichardt and Easy Build. Teams comprise the standard 11 players, but a soft ball will be used. Each innings will be limited to 12 overs.

The first matches will be played on Friday (8th) and the starting time is 19:30.

For more information, the following people can be contacted: Yahya Jiwa (079 6371222), Munaf Jolly (072 7868123) or Makky Raja (082 4030385).

Hundreds of residents of Mu-sina spent last Monday repair-ing roads that were recently da maged by the floods. The ini-tiative is part of Mayor Carol Phiri’s strategy of enga ging community members in the running of the municipality.

Municipal workers, led by the municipal manager, Mr Johnson Mathivha, did not want to be left behind in this community-building initiative.

All managers got down in the scorching sun with courage and enthusiasm.

Phiri says it was very im-portant to do something with the community in the spirit of

Vuk’uzenzele (do it yourself). “It will take some time before

we mobilize resources and mon-ey to replace the roads and, as responsible citizens, we couldn’t just sit and relax while our com-munities needed improved lives out there.”

Phiri thanked everyone who took part during the initiative.

“We are happy with the re-sponse we got from our commu-nity members who volunteered their time to come and assist here today. It is very important for us to sustain our noble spirit of joining hands, and to remind all of us of the need to entrench the spirit of Vuk’uzenzele. A lot

of hard work lies ahead, and this requires each of us to lend a hand, in the true spirit of volunteerism and nation building.”

One of the community mem-bers who volunteered his time to fix the roads, Mr Abel Mbevhana, said “this is what we really call cooperative governance. I did not think twice when I heard that the mayor wants us to come and as-sist the municipality here today. I decided to put aside everything because I know that the commu-nity also benefit from our efforts. I encourage other community members to work hand in hand with our municipality to create a better life for all.”

The new committee of the Makhado Netball Association was elected on Tuesday. The members are, from left to right, Rhinet Rudzani, Ndowanala Makaulule, Musanda Vho-Tshiungulela, Cllr Richardt Thandavhathu, Tshiwela Tambani and Daniel Masindi.

“Focus on your education” - ArchbishopThe leader of the United Afri-can Apostolic Church, Arch-bishop Elias Miriri, has urged the youth of his church to take their education seriously.

Miriri addressed hundreds of youths from the different branches of his church during the Vuwani 2 District’s first ever conference. The confer-ence took place at Itsani outside Thohoyandou on Sunday.

The leader of the youth in the district, Johannes Madzhie, said as the youth of the church

they could not just sit and look on when pupils achieved good results as if nothing was happening. “This is a way of motivating them. We believe this will bring better results in the long run and our youth will be counted among the best in the country,” he said.

Miriri handed over certifi-cates, medals and trophies to pupils who performed well in the 2012 Grade 12 examina-tions and said the church took the issue of education very

seriously. “I always feel envi-ous when I am invited by the government in Polokwane to hand over awards to top achiev-ers and I do not see youths from our church,” he said.

He warned the youth against rushing into sexual relation-ships, saying it would destroy their future. “Education is your husband and your wife who will never divorce you. Do not rush into things that are meant for adults. Study harder in order to get good passes,” he said.

Archbishop Elias Miriri (left) is being assisted by Vhomme Elisa Miriri in handing over awards to Mphateleni Muda, one of the top pupils in the district. Looking on is Vuwani 2 district youth leader Johannes Madzhie (right).

A meeting was held between the Soutpansberg Chamber of Commerce and the Makhado Municipality to establish a working relationship. In front, from left to right, are Municipal Manager Mr Sakkie Mutshinyali and Mayor David Mutavhatsindi. At the back are chamber president Ms Lize Strauss and member Ms Jana Smith. Photo supplied.

For the first time in three years, the Soutpansberg Chamber of Commerce in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) had an offi-cial meeting with the Makhado Municipality.

This meeting took place on Friday, 25 January. Attending the meeting were the mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, and the municipal manager, Mr Sakkie Mutshinyali, as well as two mem-bers from the chamber.

President of the chamber Ms Lize Strauss said the meeting was requested to address town problems such as sewerage,

maintenance of streets and the general appearance of the town. All these things, she indicated, have a radical impact on the economical growth of the town.

During the meeting, Mut-shinyali acknowledged that the lack of service not only burdened residents of the town, but also the entrepreneurs. He emphasized the fact that the Makhado Mu-nicipality can no longer be held responsible for the water supply. This area is now the responsi-bility of the Vhembe District Municipality. At the meeting it was resolved that businesspeople

and members of the chamber can report service delivery problems directly to the municipal man-ager. This can only be done if a problem has not been resolved by reporting it to the relevant municipal departments.

“We as the Soutpansberg Chamber of Commerce are looking forward to a mutually beneficial relationship between the Makhado Municipality and ourselves,” said Strauss.

The chamber can be contacted during normal business hours for further assistance and informa-tion at Tel 082 308 0472.

Better working relationship between municipality and Chamber of Commerce?

Officials from the forensic services carry the body of the driver, Mr Sampie Peterson of Madombidzha. He was killed when his car overturned on the Sinthumule road on Saturday.

Ramukhuba Young Brothers made Univen FC pay for the 0-2 defeat they had suffered at the hands of Mahematshena Flying Birds the previous day, when they beat them 3-2 in their SAB League match at the Univen Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Although they were playing

Univen students pay for Brothers’ defeat

in front of their home crowd, Univen looked confused in the first 30 minutes of the game. That gave the visitors a good chance to invade their territory.

Pfunzo Dzwuguda of Young Brothers was brought down within the box in the ninth min-ute. That was a clear penalty for the visitors from Ramukhuba vil-lage. Fhumulani Ndou unleashed a powerful volley from the penalty spot. The ball hit the crossbar and bounced across the goal line. Tshamano Mudzunga of Young Brothers was booked for a late tackle on Madilonga Mukw-evho in the 19th minute of the game.

Pressure continued to mount on the defence of Univen, and ultimately it was difficult for them to absorb it. It was not surprising to see a de-fender of Univen, Koena Mohlahlana, handle the ball within the box. The referee did not hesitate to award Young Broth-ers another penalty. This time around, Ndamulelo Makhado tried his luck and the keeper of Uni-ven watched helplessly as the ball hit the back of the net. The home side was awarded a free

kick inside the box. Desmond Simelane scored from the set piece to make it 2-1.

Ramukhuba were also awarded a free kick in the 35-meter area towards the end of the first half. Thivhulawi Rammese beat the keeper with a ground cutter to bring the half-time score to 3-1.

Univen pulled one back through Eric Makamu, who came on as a substitute late in the game.

The results meant that Univen dropped five points last weekend as they played to a goalless draw with Mutandani FC at the Mutan-dani grounds the previous day.

Black Leopards to prey on students?

Another defeat for struggling Phungo

After a break of about two months, it will be business as usual for the teams campaign-ing under the banner of the Absa Premiership next week.

Three matches will be played on Tuesday, February 12, while the remaining fixtures will be played the following day.

Black Leopards will resume their league activities by hosting Bidvest Wits at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday evening. Leopards and Wits drew 2-2 in their first-round match at the Bidvest Stadium in Johannesburg seven months ago.

The rookies, University of Pre-toria, are geared to give Lamont-ville Golden Arrows a soccer

lesson when they meet at the Absa Tuks Stadium in Pretoria. Amatuks started the season on a high note but were gradually los-ing their grip as they unexpect-edly lost two easy home games before breaking for the festive holidays.

The defending league champi-ons, Orlando Pirates, will have a date with Supersport United at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto. Moroka Swallows will fly to Cape Town. Their match against Ajax Cape Town will be played at the Cape Town Stadium. Swal-lows must win the match in order to move out of the danger zone on the log.

Platinum Stars and Bloemfon-

tein Celtic will fight for league points at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg. Platinum Stars proved in their last seven matches that they are a force to be reckoned with by winning all their home matches.

On Tuesday, Free State Stars will play against Chippa United at the Charles Mopedi Stadium in the Free State.

The match of the week will be between Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs. It will be staged at the Loftus Stadium in Pretoria.

Amazulu and Maritzburg United will play at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban in their Kwazulu Natal derby.

Mahlatse Moloto of Stars (left) and Sydney Maluleke go for the ball.

Giyani Hotspurs were too strong for the strug-gling Phungo All Stars and beat them 1-0 in a Safa Second Division match played at Eltivillas on Saturday.

Stars were the superior side from the onset as far as possession of the ball was concerned. This resulted in their putting more pressure on the defence of Spurs for the better part of the match. The Giyani lads missed a golden opportunity in the eighth minute when Stephen Ngobeni shot wide from the penalty area. Realising that their midfield was weary, the technical department of the Spurs introduced Kulani Mbombi for Sydney Maluleke.

Stars took the match to their opponents late in the match. The second half was characterised by dangerous play from the home team's players. In an attempt to calm the situation, the referee flashed some yellow cards in quick succession. Nhlanhla Mkhize and Tondani Nkhumeleni for Stars were booked for applying dirty tricks and dangerous play.

Thabo Malane of Spurs dribbled past three defenders in a row and sent an excellent pass to the unmarked Lesley Malayane, who beat keeper Reason Mbedzi easily.

The home team's keeper, Reason Mbedzi, save his team through his acrobatic saves. He was named man of the match.

Receiving the certificate, trophy and a framed photo is the Postnet Thohoyandou staff. From left are Ms Nnditsheni Makhado, Jafter Mamugudubi (Mamu´s publicist), Tondani Khangale (Postnet), Ms Nkanukeni Nengovhela (Postnet) and Mr Marubini Mapholi (Postnet Thohoyandou and Musina manager).

Mamu Community Sports De-velopment recently received a sponsorship from Postnet for their annual Sinthumule Ku-tama Easter Soccer Challenge and the event was a roaring success.

Last Friday, Mr Jafter Mamu-gudubi, the organisation's publi-cist, visited the company at the Game Centre in Thohoyandou. He handed over a full report of the tournament to the Post-net Thohoyandou and Musina manager, Mr Marubini Mapholi. He also handed a certificate of appreciation and a framed

picture of the winning team to Mr Mapholi.

"This is just to show our appreciation for what this com-pany has done for us. We value the good work that it is doing for the community and we just pray that many make use of this com-pany, so that they will always have something to share with the community. Our tournament was a roaring success, and we felt that we should come back to say thank you to them and acknowledge the good they are doing in the community," said Mamugudubi.

In response, Mapholi said when they helped they were just performing their social re-sponsibility and did not expect anything in return. "It is rare to find people you have helped coming back to you just to say thank you. This organization found it neccessary to do that and it really encourages us to help them further. I just hope this will build a long-lasting re-lationship with the organization. We have something in common with the organization, and that is community development," said Mapholi.

It will be another weekend packed with action for the teams affiliated to the Safa Second Division.

The four teams based in the Vhembe District, Rospa United, Basel FC, Nobela All Stars and Phungo All Stars, will be en-gaged in local derbies.

Rospa United will play against Phungo All Stars at the Mal-amulele Stadium. It is time for Phungo All Stars to pull up their socks if they are serious about escaping the relegation axe at the

end of the season. Although they had recently signed 15 players in a bid to strengthen their squad, Phungo are still battling to fi nd a winning combination.

Phungo will not fi nd it easy to contain the United playmaker, Marks Munyai, and the team’s captain, Mashudu “Tlolo” Mashapha.

The other derby will be be-tween Basel FC and Nobela All Stars at the refurbished Makwarela Stadium.

Basel are one of the hot con-

tenders for the league title, while Nobela All Stars are fast becom-ing the league’s milk cow. They have been disappointing the team’s supporters at home and away since the beginning of the season.

In the other matches that will also be played tomorrow after-noon, Lephalale Young Killers will play against Winners Park, Magezi FC and Blue Rocks will meet, Giyani Hotspurs will host Mighty FC, while The Dolphins will pay a visit to Baroka FC.

Zoutpansberg Powerline gave away three points when they lost 2-1 to current log leaders Madombidzha Western Stars. The Safa Vhembe SAB match was played at the Madombidzha grounds on Sunday.

Powerline squandered numerous scor-ing opportunities in the opening minutes. Their speedy forward, Tshepo Ragimana, was unlucky as he missed a fortune 10

minutes into the game. He received a beautiful pass from Vhutshilo Mafunisa and shot aimlessly from inside the box, instead of taking his time before unleash-ing. He caused another upset a little later when he lost possession inside the box with the Stars keeper, Leonard Masala, already beaten.

A defender of Powerline, Thomas Machaba, was booked for dangerous play

on Thabo Mamburu. Stars opened their account in the 34th minute.

The keeper of Powerline, Musiwa Man-gomeni, mishandled the ball and Maanda Magoro, who was waiting next to the goal line, blasted in a rocket.

Five minute later, Stars added another goal when Daniel Nkosi dribbled pass three defenders in a row and scored easily.

The hosts had themselves to blame for their failure to produce a goal in the early minutes of the second half. Their striking force, manned by Lucky Masutha and Pfano Sithuga, was out of touch for the better part of the match.

R u d z a n i N e b u l u scored the only goal for Powerlines.

T h o m a s M a c h a -ba of Powerline was cautioned with a card for rough play on Si-las Rammbona. Credit should have gone to the Stars keeper, Leonard Masala, who made sev-eral saves. Powerline should have equalised, but they were denied the chance to break the rock-solid defence of their opponents.Thabo Mamburu of Stars controls the ball.

Lucky Masutha (right) of Stars beats his opponent, Thomas Machaba.

Oscar Ramantswana of Stars jumps high for the ball, while Dakalo Khomola is waiting for himto make a mistake.

Nedbank Cup

Musina Family to meet Lovers

Dynamos vs Mpumalanga Aces

Excitement as Home Defenders host Young Santos

The National First Division teams will play their preliminary matches for the Nedbank Cup next Wednes-day afternoon, February 13. Dy-namos should regard themselves lucky as they will play their prelimi-nary match at their home ground, Giyani Stadium.

The pride of Giyani will host Mpumalanga Black Aces. Aces are the current log leaders, and for that reason Dynamos must be ready for war if they are serious about proceed-ing to the next stage of the prestigious competition. Aces have recently ac-quired the services of two seasoned players from the Absa Premiership side, Bloemfontein Celtic.

In the other Nedbank preliminary fixtures, Sivutsa Stars will host Af-rican Warriors at the Kanyamazane Stadium in Nelspruit. The Cape Town

derby between Vasco Da Gama and Santos will be played at the Parow Park Stadium and FCAK will travel to Polokwane, where they will rub shoulders with Polokwane City at the University of Limpopo Stadium.

United FC will pin their hopes on their two killer strikers, Jeffrey Mokoena and Andrew Makena, for goals when they host Roses United at the Maruleng Stadium in the Free State. Thanda Royal Zulu will be the visitors in their match against Milano United. The match will be played at the Grassy Park Stadium.

Witbank Spurs and Blackburn Rov-ers will test each other’s strength at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Witbank. Jomo Cosmos will meet FC Cape Town at the Johannesburg Stadium. All matches are scheduled to start at 15:00.

One of the Santos midfielders, Sharlen Munyamela.

The Makonde Stadium is expected to be full to capacity when a lo-cal SAB League team, Makonde Home Defenders, will host the title chasers, Mukula Young Santos, on Sunday afternoon.

Young Santos will want to avoid dropping more significant league points after sharing the spoils with Mukula Avalon at home last Sat-urday.

Thematch ended in a 1-1 draw. Home Defenders must keep a close eye on the Santos midfielders, Vha-hangwele Tshifhango, Edzisani Makhuvha and Sharlen Munyamela, or else they will be buried alive on their home soil.

The other league title contenders, Makwarela Development Stars, will play against Mushunwa Try Again at the Makwarela Stadium.

The other SAB League weekend fixtures are: Khubvi Dangerous Darkies vs Tshidimbini Brave Li-ons, Vondwe XI Bullets vs Mudas-

wali United Brothers, Matsakali Sky Rangers vs Lombard Power Rangers, Khakhanwa United Stars vs Mphire-leni Nandoni, Table New Comers vs Dididi Flying Swallows, Ngwenani Young Chiefs vs Madidinngwe Young Stars, United Artists vs Vhem-be FET College, Ramukhuba Young Brothers vs Tshedza FC, Maungani Mighty Masters vs Gwamasenga United Brothers, Duthuni United Brothers vs Tswinga New Genera-tions, Mahematshena Flying Birds vs Shayandima Disco Five, Makhitha Oscar Stars vs Tshikota Chelsea, Zoutpansberg Powerline vs Benny’s Care Academy, Zamekomste United Brothers vs Tshiozwi Dynamos, Bokisi Happy Fighters vs Vyeboom, Mashamba Soccer Academy vs Masa-kona United Brothers, Seven United Brothers vs Rabali Pull Together, Vhulaudzi United Brothers vs Matsa Northern Stars and Shanzha Conti-nentals vs Murunwa Hot Chillies.

Joshua Netshilindi of Young Santos (left) and Dakalo Masithi of Avalon chase the ball.

The much-talked-about SAB League Mukula derby between Mukula Young Santos and Mukula Avalon ended in a 1-1 draw at the Mukula Tshidzani-tsha-Maria grounds on Saturday.

Although Santos are one of the hot con-tenders for the league title, while Avalon are perched further down the log, the game was a thriller from the onset to the better end.

Santos’ Rastafarian striker, Rendani Madega, who would normally score more than two goals within the fi rst 45 min-utes, could not live up to the fans’ expectations as he was tightly marked. Madega was unfortunate in the 25th minute. He missed a sitter within the box after a square pass from Vhahangwele Tshifhango. In-stead of relaxing and waiting for the ball to come his way, Madega rushed to the goal line, leaving the ball behind.

Vhahangwele Tshifhango of Santos was reprimanded with a card for obstruction in the 34th minute.

Santos introduced Nkhiphi-theni Ramukumba and Lutendo Mahandana for Khwathisani Takalani and Nndatenei Net-shitadi respectively early in the last half. They were awarded a free kick in the 35-meter area after Sharlen Munyamela was tackled roughly. Vhahangwele Tshifhango beat the keeper

from the set piece to give Santos a 1-0 lead. Avalon did not stop fi ghting, de-spite the fact that time was not on their side. Martin Mafune, who came on as a substitute, was brought down within the box and the referee, Mr V Nethenzheni, awarded a penalty to Avalon.

Martin Mafune woke up and scored

from the penalty spot. The players and fans for Santos were aggrieved by the ref-eree’s decision to award Avalon a penalty. They confronted him angrily, accusing him of favouritism.

They later calmed down and left the referee alone and allowed the game to be played to the fi nish.
