William Caslon founded the Caslon Foundry at

around 1720,which became the leading

English typefoundry of the 18th and 19th centuries.

After the death of Willia

Foundry business,which lasted until Willia

sold the foundry to Blake, Gamett

& Co. In 1792,William Caslon III s

the Salisbury Square foundry from the recently

deceased Joseph Jackson, and renamed it to

Caslon &Son. In 1807,Caslon & Son was passed to

of Blake, Gamett & Co. In 1837, the

Caslon Foundry became the property of Stephenson,

running until 1937, when Stephenson Blake

acquired the remianing H.W. Caslon & Sons Foundry.

Caslon is a group of serif typeface designed by William Caslon (1692-1766) ,and various revivals thereof.Caslon shares the irregularity characteristic of Dutch Baroque types.It is characterized by short a ascender, bracketed serif, moderately hight contrast , robust texture, and moderate modulation of stroke. The A has concave hollow at the apex, the G is without a spur.Caslon’s italic have rhythmic calligrahic stroke. Characters A, Vand W have an acute slant.Introduction

William Caslon I- born 1692 in Cradley ,Worcestershire ,England , -died 1766 in Bethnnal Green, England -engraver ,type founder, typew designer.1706 begins a seven-year apprenticeship as an engraver with a london harness-maker.1716self-employed engraver. 1721: the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge commissionsCaslon to cast Arabric alphabets. 1725: set up his own tpye foundry. 1734: Caslon’s �rst one-page specimen is produced which illustrates 47 of his typefaces. 1737: the type foundry moves to Chiswell Street in London, where it continues to operate for 200 year’s.

William Caslon II- born 1720 - died 1778 - type founder, type designer.1742: join his father’s company. 1763: father and son issue the �rst English book of type specimens, which includes 56 alphabets by Caslon senior and 27 by his son,designed between 1738 and 1766 :after the death of his father, Caslon junior runs the family business until 1778.

William Caslon IIIWilliam Caslon III- born 1754 - died 1833 - type founder.Caslon III sold his share of the business to his mother and daugther-in-law and used the money to buy the Jackson type foundry, The type foundry until 1819, when the foundry ,The type remainted the property of hte Caslon family until 1795.1807: Caslon IV take over the running of the type foundry until 1819, when the foundry is bought by Blake , Garnett & Co. 1837: the type foundry, still under the name of Caslon , became the property of the Stephenson, Blake & Co.type foundry in She�eld.
