Hope of revitalizationIt is a time of great uncertainty on theinternational markets. The global econo-my is slowing down, energy and commod-ity prices are rising, and demand for furni-ture and other wood products is falling. The international wood industry is there-fore looking to LIGNA HANNOVER 2009(18 to 22 May) to revitalize the market. One of the biggest drivers of innovation –and hence capital investment – today isthe need for resource efficiency, a topicthat is very high on the agenda at LIGNA2009 (see interview on page 3).

This key theme is not limited to the efficient use of wood, energy and time. Manufacturers of woodworkingmachinery will be demonstrating howthe entire wood production chain – fromthe forestry and timber industries to theindustrial production of finished woodproducts – can be made more resource-efficient. In all display areas, the 1,800-plus exhibitors expected at the fair willbe showcasing the latest efficiency-enhancing technologies and trends:energy and time-saving solutions fortimber harvesting and hauling, timberstorage innovations, and pioneeringdevelopments in sawmill technologyand timber transport. Also vital to effi-ciency is energy from wood, a keynotetheme dear to the heart of the fair-going public at the moment.Mounting competitive pressure is push-ing up buyer expectations of wood-working machinery. Buyers now expecttheir suppliers to deliver greater produc-tivity, more flexibility and new ways tosave money – e.g. through greaterresource efficiency and quality supportservices. Only by keeping up with thesetrends can machinery vendors and buy-ers stay competitive over the long term.By bringing together partners from theforestry, energy and machine manufac-turing industries, LIGNA HANNOVER isable to profile synergies between theforestry industry and all downstreamsegments of the timber and woodindustries.

Resource efficiency as a driver of innovation

Wooden SurfaceSolutionsThe “Wooden Surface Solutions” initia-tive will be in its second season in 2009.Here, too, resource efficiency will be topof the agenda, with themes includingraw materials efficiency, energy andcost-efficiency, value-added processingand eco-friendly surface solutions.“Wooden Surface Solutions” was initi-ated two years ago by Deutsche Messeand the German WoodworkingMachinery Manufacturers’ Associationwithin the VDMA and is staged inclose cooperation with active LIGNAexhibitors from the surface finishingsector and the Rosenheim Universityfor Applied Sciences (FH Rosenheim). As in 2007, the organizers will be pub-lishing the “Wooden Surface Solu-tions” magazine for LIGNA HAN-NOVER 2009. The magazine carriespractically-focused reports and storieson resource efficiency in the surfacefinishing sector. Exhibitors from thissector will be able to profile theirexpertise in the magazine, whichcomes out two months before thestart of the fair.

The new resource-efficiency technolo-gies profiled at the upcoming LIGNA fairhave the potential to become drivers ofcapital investment. In the followinginterview, Dr. Bernhard Dirr, the Manag-ing Director of the German Woodwork-ing Machinery Manufacturers’ Associa-tion within the VDMA, talks about thisand the overall situation in the wood-working machinery industry.

How is the 2008 year looking for thewoodworking machinery industry –given the current crisis? What is theoutlook for 2009?After three very good years and an his-toric high, some sectors have cooled offmarkedly while others are still doingvery well. The market is made up of twosegments. In the primary segment, theorder books are still looking very healthy– the companies have forward bookingswell into 2009 and are working at closeto capacity. The secondary segment –e.g. the solid wood working, interior fin-ishing and furniture manufacturing sec-tors – has already worked through mostof its backlog. We expect the 2008 fig-ures will show a slight fall-off in busi-ness. Having said that, 2007 was thebest year ever for this segment.

The problems besetting the global realestate markets have had a majorimpact, particularly in the USA, Spainand the UK. For machinery manufactur-ers this means that volumes are downby as much as 70 percent in several

segments, especially in the USA. Arethe markets that are still growing suffi-cient to make up for these losses?Eastern Europe, Turkey and South Ameri-ca are currently the engines of growth forour industry. The No. 1 growth market isand remains Russia, where our sales –which have been healthy for many years– have again more than doubled year onyear. For example, during the period fromJanuary to July 2008, German exports toRussia grew by 116 percent, while exportsto Turkey grew by 62 percent, and toSouth America by as much as 294 per-cent. So, yes, the growth markets are suf-ficient to make up for the weakness ofthe other markets.

In what ways does the German Engi-neering Federation help its members toaccess these foreign markets? Our membership is made up mostly ofsmall and medium-sized enterprises. Our core function is therefore to analyzenew markets for these companies andprovide in-country support for salesactivities and participation at tradefairs. For example, this November we’reorganizing a group showcase at anevent in Krasnoyarsk in the heart ofSiberia, a largely untapped market.

LIGNA HANNOVER is seen worldwide asa “business barometer” for the wood-working machinery industry. What isthe role of the upcoming LIGNA show?LIGNA is much more than a businessbarometer. It is a pivotal trade fair that

“Resource efficiency is about muchmore than conserving energy”Interview with Dr. Bernhard Dirr, Director, VDMA GermanWoodworking Machinery Manufacturers’ Association

3

shapes our industry’s innovation cycleand defines its entire trade fair calen-dar. Trade fairs are even more importantwhen times are tough because theyhave a key influence on customers’ buy-ing decisions and stimulate capitalspending.Another important aspect for us is thatglobal commodity and energy prices areincreasing, a trend that has the potentialto damage or even bankrupt many busi-nesses. Against this background, LIGNA,with its central focus on resource effi-ciency, could not come at a better time.

What in your view are the key LIGNAtrends in this area?Resource efficiency is a big area. Morethan just energy efficiency, it’s aboutmaking optimal use of raw materials, time and human resources. If a businessachieves even a small saving across itsentire production process – for example,by using less glue in its chipboard manu-facturing, reducing sawmill cuttingwaste or using less varnish on the furni-ture it makes – this will have a directimpact on its bottom line. We thereforeneed to convince our customers that itpays to invest in our leading-edge, high-ly efficient machines; and that thosewho buy cheap machines generally endup paying dearly for it in the long run –and not just because of the greater sus-ceptibility to breakdowns. When itcomes to resource efficiency, ourmachine manufacturers are well aheadof the international market.

The forestry, forestry technology andwood-based energy display areas nowrank among the most important sec-tions of LIGNA HANNOVER. They arehome to the latest technologies forfully mechanized timber harvestingand recovery, as well as machinery, equipment and tools and innovationsfor timber storage and wood fuel pro-duction.The main theme for LIGNA HANNOVER2009 is “Making more out of Wood –Technology for Resource Efficiency”.Because for the forestry industry, get-ting more out of wood means usingraw materials and technology effi-ciently. Wood utilization is a key part ofthis. Wood utilization – or “wood mobi-lization”, as it’s known in Europe –refers to the totality of organizational, advisory and logistical activitiesdesigned to maximize forest yields/wood utilization within the constraintsof sustainability. These activities rangefrom blanket forest inventories, toreforestation, to forest crop manage-

ultra-rapid transfer of timber, contract, billing and supply data. GeoDAT/Navlogis a joint initiative to produce accurate, readily useable digital maps of Ger-many’s entire network of forestry tracksand log haulage routes.QS Harvester is a QA system developedby KWF that ensures that harvestingequipment is correctly calibrated, there-by making measurements of log lengthand diameter by harvesters more trans-parent and accurate.

ELDAT, NavLog and QS HarvesterLogistics and network information sys-tems offer enormous potential for therationalization of processes betweenmarket partners in the forestry andwood industries. Which is why web-based technologies will feature sostrongly at the Entrepreneurial Exper-tise Center in Pavilion 33, with solutionslike ELDAT, NavLog and QS Harvester.ELDAT is an indispensable supply chainmanagement tool that supports the

The German Forestry Council (KWF)and Deutsche Messe will in 2009 bestaging the fourth LIGNA Entrepre-neurial Expertise Center in Pavilion 33.The Center addresses fundamentalissues facing today’s forestry compa-nies, such as the challenge of growingcompetition on an increasingly inter-national market. The pavilion will onceagain also be supported by the Ger-man Association of Forestry Contrac-tors (AFL).
