Issue 11 : Regular Season Eagles vs. 49ers

The Eagles host the San Francisco 49ers at Lincoln Financial Field this weekend in a game that has playoff implications for both teams. The Eagles are coming off of a huge win against the New York Giants in the Meadowlands and are looking to distance themselves from the Cowboys and Giants in the race for the NFC East title. The 49ers are coming off of a huge victory over divi-sion rival Arizona on Monday Night Football, a win that kept the team’s playoff hopes alive. Sitting at 6-7 the 49ers will most likely need to win all of their games from here on out if they have any hope of reaching postseason play so the Eagles will be playing a team that is fighting for their playoff lives right now. The Eagles win over the Giants allowed the team to take sole possession of first place in the NFC East and the Eagles could start to distance themselves even further in the division race with a win over the 49ers. Last week’s game against the Giants turned out to be an unexpectedly high scoring shootout. Last Saturday, LFF hosted a record breaking historic Army-Navy Game, attended by Secretary of Defense, Richard Gates, and several high rank-ing Admirals and Generals.. With their 17-3 victory, Navy broke the long-est win streak (previously held by both at 7) in the 110 history of this greatest rivalry, and won the Commander-In-Chiefs Trophy for a record 7 consecutive years (previously held by the Air Force Academy). 3 NCAA records were also broken during the game. Below are some of these highlights:

ArmyArmyArmyArmy:

• Their first halftime lead since 2001

• First time they shutout Navy in the first half since 1993.

• First time Army led Navy since the first quarter of the 2006 game.

• Army was bowl eligible for the first time since 1996 until their lost to Navy,

• Alex Carlton's 23-yard field goal blocked Navy Coach Ken Niumata-lolo from what would have been a record 2 consecutive shutouts for the 1st 2 years as a Service Acad-emy Head Coach.

• Army still holds the longest streak without a loss at 11 years (2 ties mixed with their 7 game win streak).

NavyNavyNavyNavy:

• Navy Coach Ken Niumatalolo is the first coach to win the Com-mander-In=Chief’s Trophy for the 1st 2 years as Head Coach, after becoming only the 2nd Head Coach to win it in his Rookie Year. He’s also the only Head Coach to win by a shutout in his 1st year.

• He defeated the new Army Head Coach, Rich Ellerson, who was his coach when he played for the University of Hawaii.

• He has taken Navy to a Bowl Game for every year he’s been their Assistant Head Coach and Head Coach (a record 7 consecutive years).

• is the only visiting team Head Coach to defeat Notre Dame in his 1st time bringing a team to South Bend.

• Navy Quarterback, Ricky Dobbs, broke 3 NCAA records:

• The most rushing touchdowns by a Quarterback in one season (he already broke the single game record earlier this season)

• The single season rushing yards by a Quarterback

• The career rushing yards by a Quarterback (and he’s only a Jun-ior!)

• A prior owner of all 3 records was Super Bowl winning Hall of Fame Cowboy QB Roger Staubach!

Both teams will have key players returning next year, including Navy QB sensation Ricky Dobbs. With Army rebuilding under their new coach and Navy showing us the early career of Football’s next coaching legend, next year’s Army-Navy Game should be another historic match-up.

We all go through times in our lives where things just don't go our way and then the time comes when you just have to unleash some serious aggression. The last thing anyone wants to do is get in the way of a sleeping giant.

This was the case on Decem-ber 20th, 1981. The Eagles had been on a roll season then all of a sudden hit a brick wall with 4 straight losses. They were on the verge of missing the playoffs just a year after going to the superbowl.

Unfortunately the St. Louis Cardinals had the unlucky distinction of getting in the Eagles way and did they ever pay for it. Playing in the cold nasty weather that was reminiscent of late December days in Philadelphia, the Eagles scored 5 touchdowns, 3 of them on passes from Ron Jaworkski and a frightening defense forced 6 turnovers en-route to a 38-0 victory. It was indeed going to be a great Christmas as the Eagles gave their fans a 4th straight playoff appearance; a club record at the time!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and the Merchandise Game Day staff team is filled with lots of nice boys and girls that have been working almost as hard as your elves! They have been taking care of guests at Lincoln Financial Field all season long- providing them with the highest quality service. Our staff has been working as a team to sell lots of this season’s hottest items. We don’t know what we would do without them! We would like to show our Game Day Staff how much we appreciate their dedication and hard work. When you are making your list, and checking it twice, can you be sure to add our incredible Merchandise Game Day staff mem-bers? After selling lots of Eagles merchandise throughout the year, many of them have their eyes on an item or two! While you are dashing through the snow, please be sure to make a stop at Lincoln Financial Field to treat our staff members to some Eagle’s gear. Here are some of their requests:

I attended the Redskins game on 11/29. My seat was on the 39 yard line behind the Eagles' bench, lower deck, last row (the suites or boxes or whatever they are were directly behind and above us). I was VERY impressed with a few things, and wanted to pass my com-pliments on to you and your staff. First, from the time we were searched, on the outskirts of the sta-dium, those staff were uniformly pleasant and friendly. The feeling in the parts of the stadium where I walked around was relaxed and felt safe. I wouldn't have any hesitation bringing children into that environment. The staff who worked the entrance to the section where our seats were located were also uniformly friendly and courteous through-out the day, greeting fans as we filed in at the beginning, joking and smiling with fans who were moving out to the bathrooms and con-cessions as the game went on. At one point the security staff called deep into a row to get some young male to come and speak with them about something-there was no incident in the stands that I was aware of-and while several guys had rotated into the entrance-way, the manner in which the young guy was walked toward the concession stands was calm and non-confrontational. In fact, the staff member put his arm around the guy as they walked away, but not in a manner that appeared to be in the least aggressive. Later the guy returned to his seat and seemed non-plussed by whatever it was about. Finally, on the way out of the stadium, as we passed through the outer gates, the staff once again were uniformly friendly-smiling and wishing us a pleasant evening. I had heard things at the Linc were very different from the Vet days but I have to say I expected a bit of surliness from staff, some machismo from the security, folks, etc. and am glad to have been dead wrong! So, well done!! I look forward to the next time I attend a game. Regards, Joe

Even though Thanksgiving has passed, it is that time of the year again to give thanks. However, this time it is time to thank all of the fans and Guests who attend Eagles games at Lincoln Financial Field. At the game today and during next week’s game against the Broncos we are asking all of our Game Day Staff members to thank our fans for their support and to wish them a happy holidays. Feel free to thank our fans that you see week in and week out for their support of the Eagles, remind them that they are indeed the best fans in the NFL, or wish them Happy Holidays. Thank you!
