be notifying you of school closings or emergencies through the

School Beacon system, so it is very important that you register.

If you have a computer just go to the

Red Ribbon Week-“A Drug Free Life Rocks” Photo Courtesy of North Platte Telegraph Some of the content for this article was written by John Lindenberger from the North Platte Telegraph Students at Lincoln elementary participated in Red Ribbon Week October 21-23, 2009. Students were presented with Red Ribbons which were numbered and distributed within the classrooms. Prizes were drawn throughout the week. The week’s activities culminated with an assembly in the gymnasium on Friday morn-ing, October 21. Col. Mike Navrkal of the Army National Guard was this year’s special guest speaker. He spoke to the students about the importance of ser-vice. “I have the opportunity to serve in the Army National guard, and that is something that is very important to me.” Navrkal told the children that he had traveled to about 20 different countries in his life. He shared with the children that each time he returns to the United States that he feels very lucky. He said that is one of the most important reasons why he serves. “I love this country and I love what this county stands for.” Navrkal also talked to the students about drugs and how they can inter-fere with our service to others. He noted that people within the military don’t use drugs, because it is incompatible with the mission of the mili-tary. “We want people to think clearly,” Navrkal said. “So living a drug-free lifestyle is critical. It’s an absolute for the military.” Mark Stokey of the Nebraska State Patrol also spoke to the students. He brought along his partner, Max, a 9 year old German Shepherd who helps locate drugs for NSP troopers. Some of the fourth grade students performed a puppet show called “The Kingdom of Self Esteem.” In this show students helped their peers to understand that people who have a healthy sense of self esteem and who have good character are more likely to say no to drugs.

We appreciated the great turnout for parent teacher’s conferences. We always learn a lot about your child and we hope you found out about your child’s progress. If you have any more questions don’t wait until another scheduled conference. Please contact us.

Boy did the children have fun at Fun Night! Thank you PTA for a fun and well organized event.

Please remind your children to wash their hands often. We remind them to wash after playing, after using the restrooms and before they eat. We want to keep the flu bug at bay. We need your help, please. Be sure your child is wearing a warm coat, too please.

Thank you for the treats for our fall parties. We hope you have a safe, fun, and not too scary Halloween!

Keep reading those books we send home. We want to see lots of practice.

Miss Kubes & Mrs. Dymond

We would like to thank all of the parents, grandparents and guardians that took the time to attend Parent/Teacher Conferences on October 15 and 16. It is always good to touch base with all members of your child’s learning team. As parents you are the MOST IM-PORTANT member of the team. The time and effort you put forth to spend with your chil-dren will always reap rewards.

As the holiday season approaches we will be continuing to learn each and every day. Topics for this next month include patterning, counting and writing numerals. We will also be working hard on letters and sounds, blending and segmenting sounds and rhyming words.

Please continue to help your child to write their name correctly using starting points and correct sizing and spacing.

Finally, PLEASE help your child learn to tie their own shoes, zip their own coats and take care of their own sneezes and coughs. Any independence that your child can gain will make their learning easier and more productive.

Preschoolers Search for Dinosaurs with Mrs. Chromy

The preschoolers had fun this month learning about dinosaurs! They pretended to be paleon-tologists and spent time searching and discov-ering dinosaur bones, put together a dinosaur skeleton, matched dinosaurs, read dinosaur stories, learned facts about dinosaurs, learned lots of names of dinosaurs (why do dinosaurs have such long names?) They even made di-

nosaur eggs. It was fun to hear the baby dinosaurs, as they were cracking out of their eggs. What a fun surprise each preschooler had when their dinosaur egg cracked open! Ask a preschooler about their surprise!!

The 3rd graders have been busy learning how to create and read graphs in Math. They have used tally charts, line graphs, bar graphs, and pictographs to distinguish information. Don't forget to con-tinue practicing those math facts at home because we are still working on them too.

In Language we have learned about nouns. The students can identify nouns as a person, place, or thing. They can also tell you the difference between a common noun and a proper noun. Recently we have been learning how to make nouns plural. There are different rules to follow while doing this task.

In Social Studies we have learned about a variety of communities from rural to urban. The students are beginning to under-stand how one change within a community can effect the rest of the community. Ask your student to give you some examples of this happening.

We would like to send a special thank you to The North Platte Elk's Lodge #985 for recently sup-

plying the entire 3rd grade with new dictionaries. Each student received their own to take home

but will be using them at school for the rest of the school year.

Where did October go? Our first quarter is behind us now and we are quickly headed towards Thanks-giving. In writing students have been comparing and contrasting the first celebration with their family traditions. Students have enjoyed working with graphs and drawing conclusions from data in math. Mul-tiplication will be next so work on those facts. There are several internet sites filled with activities to sup-port math skills. Students can access these sites at home as well as at school.

Please encourage your child to continue to read at home. Our Accelerated Reader points are looking good. Most students are moving into the 25 point club and beyond.

A huge thank you to all of the parents who attended Parent Teacher’s Conferences! It is an excellent time to discuss you child’s academic progress. It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is almost upon us. All grade levels have accomplished a lot since the beginning of the school, and there is still so much more to learn! I am very pleased with the Reading progress the students are making! It is such a joy to see their read-ing confidence change and progress. They are finding out that reading is very exciting! KEEP READ-ING! With the holidays approaching it is a busy time of the year. We need to make sure

that our children are receiving plenty of sleep, eating breakfast, and arrive to school on time to ensure they are reading at their full potential. Please encourage your child to read thirty minutes at home each day to keep all the progress going. This is especially important over an extended period of time they are not in school. Thanks for all the help. Have a safe and restful Thanksgiving! Mrs. McCarthy

Title 1 Reading

Ms. Zimbelman is starting to highlight the Golden Sower books in her Library Skills classes. This week’s fea-tured book for upper grades is “How to Steal a Dog”, by Barbara O’Connor. This book will grab you with it’s realism when a girl and her family have to live in their car for a few weeks because her newly-single mother can’t pay the rent. She thinks about stealing a dog to get the reward money to help her family. You’ll have to read the book to see if she really does! Students need to read at least 4 of the 10 nominated books to be able to vote next spring. There will be treats served to those voters during elections next April. It’s not too early to start reading the nominated books. Sign in on the posters in the library as you read them so we can keep track. Keep up the great work, INCREDIBLE READERS!

It is November and both fifth grade classes are hard at work learning how to do long division. For some students this is

quite a challenge because they haven't mastered their multiplication facts. Daily practice either writing their facts or practic-

ing with flash cards will remedy this situation. We also ask that each child spend thirty minutes reading each day at home.

The benefits are increased vocabulary, reading comprehension, and better reading fluency. These things will help all sub-

ject areas.

By the end of November our students will have completed D.A.R.E. classes with Officer Poe. One of the requirements is

that students must write a D.A.R.E. essay. Be watching for this project as it may require some extra time and assistance

from home.

Lastly, we know that cold and flu season is upon us and that students are going to get sick. We encourage attendance, but

sometimes it is better for students to stay home and get well. When students return they will probably have quite a bit of

make-up work to complete. We make every effort to provide the time and assistance they need, even helping them after

school, but many times work can be completed as homework. Please make sure that if your child misses school that they

complete all make-up work. If you aren't sure if they have completed it all, check with us. We'll be glad to let you know.

Winter Weather Emergency Closing Procedures

Weather conditions during the winter may necessitate a change in the normal hours school is in session. The decision to close schools, delay starting times, or dismiss early is made by the Central Office Administration. School closing information will be announced via the school district’s phone messaging system and by the following radio stations:

KX 104 FM KELN 97.1 FM KOGA 930 AM

KODY 1240 AM KJLT 94.9 FM and 970 AM KNPQ 107.3 FM KOOQ 1410 AM KZTL 93.5 FM

KRNP 100.7 FM KHAQ 98.5 FM KMCX 106.5 FM

99.7 The Lake FM KOGA 106 FM

Closing information will also be announced on TV stations KNOP channel 2 and NTV channel 6.

School Closing. If a decision is made to close schools, the announcement will be made by the local radio stations and Channel 2 by approximately 7:00 a.m. The decision not to have school is made by the superintendent after he has made the following contacts, when appropriate:

The City Street Department to check the street conditions in the city

The school maintenance staff to determine if they can manage snow removal in the immediate areas of schools and school entries

The area station of the National Weather Service for an estimate of the length and severity of the storm or cold weather

Delayed Starting Time. In some cases, it may be advisable to delay starting times to allow more time for snow removal. Announcements to this effect will be carried by local stations by approximately 7 a.m.

Early Dismissal. Sometimes weather worsens during the school hours, making it advisable to dismiss students before the regular dismissal time. It shall be the philosophy of the District to avoid early dismissal if at all possible except in extreme cases. Parents who wish to remove their children during inclement weather may do so. In the event of an early dismissal, the information will be announced by the local radio stations. Parents will be asked to pick up their children as soon as pos-sible.

The final decision as to whether a child should attend school or stay at home is the responsibility of the par-ents.
